Formula None is the sixth comic of SpongeBob Comics No. 40.

Synopsis

SpongeBob and Mr. Krabs are overlooking their shelves of formula ingredients when Krabs realizes they are out of Ingredient #37. SpongeBob offers to get more from the grocery store, but Krabs says he can just use artificial kelp he bought last year. SpongeBob doesn't want Mr. Krabs messing with the formula, and Krabs says he does it all the time. SpongeBob realizes that Mr. Krabs is replacing all of the ingredients with artificial kelp, and he says that artificial ones are cheaper.

Saddened, SpongeBob goes back to work, where he has a vision of what will happen if he serves the new patties: Mr. Krabs will be a beggar on the streets due to the worse quality of Krabby Patties, Plankton will fall ill from eating one, and SpongeBob himself will be arrested for fraud. SpongeBob says that he cannot serve these and must save the Krabby Patty.

Meanwhile, Squidward is serving a customer, who tells him she is allergic to kelp. SpongeBob yells at everyone to leave calmly because of the compromised formula, although the other customers do not care. SpongeBob declares that he and Squidward are going on strike, and Squidward joins in out of laziness rather than caring about the formula. SpongeBob leads a protest chant, which drives away a mother who does not want to eat at a place with "such silly employees." SpongeBob tells Squidward their protest is working.

Mr. Krabs says he can run the place fine without SpongeBob, only to go back inside and despair that he is out of customers. He claims there is nothing wrong with the new patties and tries one, which he promptly throws in the garbage. Krabs has no choice but to negotiate with SpongeBob. In the end, SpongeBob is back to serving regular, all-natural patties. He comments that all it took was a 50% cut to his and Squidward's paychecks, leading Squidward to comment, "I hate you."
