"Frankendoodle" is a SpongeBob SquarePants episode from season 2. In this episode, SpongeBob creates the evil DoodleBob.

Characters

Synopsis

On the ocean's surface, an artist in a rowboat sketches feverishly. Unfortunately, his pencil slips from his hand and falls into the sea. While screaming "No!," the French Narrator states the first rule of the artist at sea: "Always bring a spare pencil."

"Aww, look at him. Ain't he a doll?"

Down on the ocean floor, SpongeBob and Patrick are playing "Rock-Paper-Scissors" with bubbles when the pencil suddenly lands in between them. SpongeBob and Patrick, at first terrified of the large artifact, start to doodle with it. They soon discover that whatever they draw with the pencil comes to life, and thus dub it the "magic pencil."

SpongeBob soon draws "DoodleBob," a sketch version of himself intended to fool Squidward. However, DoodleBob beats Squidward up and steals the magic pencil, going off to wreak havoc across the seascape. SpongeBob and Patrick attempt to ambush DoodleBob, but fail when he appears too early before they could. SpongeBob eventually turns the tide of battle and uses the pencil's eraser to rub out DoodleBob.

Unbeknownst to SpongeBob and Patrick, a lone arm remains, and in the night it steals the pencil back from SpongeBob and redraws its body while adding his angry eyebrows. DoodleBob then attempts to erase SpongeBob, and during the struggle, the pencil snaps in half. DoodleBob has the eraser and SpongeBob has the point. However, DoodleBob sharpens his half and SpongeBob accidentally flicks his pencil out of the window at Squidward's head. DoodleBob corners SpongeBob in front of a bookshelf, but steps on a sheet of paper and finds his foot absorbed into it.

Seizing his chance, SpongeBob closes DoodleBob in a book, in which the doodle is finally happy. The page with DoodleBob is then framed on a wall. Patrick arrives and listens to SpongeBob's musings on the nature of his doppelgänger, taking SpongeBob's photograph for the doodle. Knowing it's too dangerous in the wrong hands, they decide to send the magic pencil back from where it came, shooting it back up to the distraught artist.

With his drawing instrument returned, the artist excitedly prepares to begin a new masterpiece, but when the pencil meets the canvas, the lead snaps. As the French Narrator states the second important rule of the artist at sea, "Always bring a pencil sharpener," the artist screams "No!" again.

This episode is number 8 on The Tom Kenny Collection on iTunes and Amazon.com. His description says:

"SpongeBob creates an evil doodle of himself with a magic pencil he finds. I actually feel sorry for the 'monster' when he has to be erased. Another semi-creepy one! Producer Paul Tibbett_[sic] does Frankendoodle's_[sic] voice."

Trivia

General

SpongeBob is colored in a noticeably darker shade of yellow in this episode.
- This also occurs in "Krusty Love" and "Sailor Mouth," though he's a slightly brighter shade of yellow in those episodes.
This is the first episode for two things:
- The first episode where Paul Tibbitt provides a voice for a character.
- The first episode to use the tracks "Lonely Stranger" and "Fancytale."
This is the last episode for two things:
- The last episode to credit Walt Dohrn and Paul Tibbitt as directors.
- The last episode to have Chris Headrick as a storyboard director.
The artist at sea is portrayed by Doug Lawrence, one of the main writers on the show and the voice of Plankton, Larry the Lobster, Potty the Parrot (starting from "Feral Friends"), and Fred, among others.
The pencil is longer in live-action compared to its animated version.
Patrick's question on whether it is DoodleBob's birthday can actually be answered affirmatively, as it is still the day of DoodleBob's creation.
This episode was paired up with different episodes in different marathons:
- During the Bikini Bottom's Most Wanted, this episode was paired with "Squid on Strike."^[3]

Though DoodleBob speaks gibberish, at one point he speaks English when he says, "You doodle! Me SpongeBob!"
Squid Doodle's grumbling was reused from "Welcome to the Chum Bucket," where the mutant patty created by SpongeBob comes to life and makes the same grumbling noises.
- Coincidentally, they are both sister episodes.
The scene where DoodleBob throws a drawing of a bowling ball at Patrick is later seen in the video game Nicktoons Movin'.
There is a Nintendo DS game based on this episode, called Drawn to Life: SpongeBob SquarePants Edition, which was released six years later and serves as a sequel.

- Patrick wishing DoodleBob a happy birthday and getting hit on the head with a rock and saying, "You're welcome."
- Patrick saying "Finland!" after DoodleBob throws a bowling ball at him as a bowling pin with a strike. He later references this quote by saying it again (while in pain) in "Accidents Will Happen" and The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water.
"Good night, sweet prince" is said again by Squidward in "I ♥ Dancing."
The "Rock-Paper-Scissors" scene was made into a tie-breaker minigame/audition for Lights, Camera, Pants!.

Dub facts

In different countries, there are dialogue changes for the "Finland!" joke.
- In the Russian dub, this joke was changed. SpongeBob says, "Where are you, Patrick?" and Patrick says, "In Finland!"
- In the French dub, SpongeBob asks to Patrick "Did you get hurt?," while Patrick says "No, not at all."
- In the Arabic dub, SpongeBob asks "Are you okay?," and Patrick replies "I'm not okay."
- In the Filipino, Italian, Korean, Thai, Chinese (Cantonese/Mainland China), and Japanese dubs, Patrick says, "Strike!" rather than "Finland!"
- In the Hebrew dub, Patrick says, "Sweden!" rather than "Finland!"
- In the Serbian dub, Patrick says, "Happy Birthday! (срећан рођендан)" rather than "Finland!
- In the German dub, Patrick says, "Strike!" ("Allen Neune!", an expression for hitting every pin in bowling)" rather than "Finland!"
- In the Taiwanese Mandarin dub, Patrick says, "才怪!" which colloquially means "Yeah, right!"
In the Finnish dub, Patrick says "Suomi!" (Finland).

Cultural references

The title is a pun on the 1931 film, Frankenstein.
- The title may also refers to the 1984 short film, Frankenweenie.
"Good night, sweet prince" is a line from the Shakespearean play Hamlet.

Miscaptialized as "Storyboard directed by"

In the opening credits, the label "storyboard directed by" is miscapitalized as "Storyboard directed by." The labels in the opening credits are usually not capitalized.
The pencil sinks to the bottom of the sea instead of floating on water, despite it being made of wood.
While the pencil is falling towards Bikini Bottom, SpongeBob and Patrick are playing Rock-Paper-Scissors with bubbles. However, when the pencil crashes into the sea floor, the bubble blowers and bubble fluid are gone.
When SpongeBob and Patrick panic at the sight of the pencil, every time SpongeBob runs off-screen, he runs to the right side of the screen, then when he reappears, he is at the left side. The same happens with Patrick, except he runs to the left side and then reappears at the right side.
When SpongeBob is drawing DoodleBob, the bottom of his mouth is cut off for one frame.
SpongeBob and Patrick ring Squidward's doorbell. When DoodleBob goes up to Squidward, he has no doorbell.
In the shot where Squidward slams his door, the monocle that fell off of him disappears.

After DoodleBob draws a hole in front of his house, SpongeBob and Patrick glitch into the frame.
When DoodleBob draws the bowling ball and is about to throw it, his right tooth becomes black for a frame then turns back to white when he actually throws the bowling ball.

When the bowling bowl is about to hit Patrick, the bowling ball is briefly not fully-drawn.
When SpongeBob and Patrick watch DoodleBob, SpongeBob's belt is missing. Later, as they gasp at what DoodleBob is doing, SpongeBob's belt appears for a second then disappears again.
DoodleBob has three fingers at first, but when his hand enters SpongeBob's bedroom and takes the pencil, he has four fingers instead. After he redraws himself, he has three fingers again.
When SpongeBob and DoodleBob are in SpongeBob's living room, in the initial shot of the TV, the images next to it are just shots of barren landscape. In the next shot, they are images of Patrick, SpongeBob, and the pineapple respectively. In the third shot, they are just solid colors. In the fourth shot, they go back to the images of Patrick, SpongeBob, and the pineapple. In the fifth shot, they go back to the solid colors. This back and forth happens two more times. The final shots of the photos are Patrick, SpongeBob, and the pineapple.
When SpongeBob breaks the pencil, it snaps in half, but after DoodleBob points SpongeBob with it after SpongeBob accidentally throws his half, the pencil is its regular length.
When SpongeBob accidentally throws his half of the pencil out the window, Squidward cries out "Hey!" However, his house is actually on the opposite side of where the window is.
The piece of paper that DoodleBob was stuck to disappears once he is trapped into the notebook.

The side of SpongeBob's belt is missing and SpongeBob looking in front of him, instead of looking at Patrick.

When SpongeBob tapes the pencil together, the two halves fit perfectly even though one half is sharpened and has an eraser at the other end.
When SpongeBob hides behind the door, DoodleBob erases it and SpongeBob's butt, but when SpongeBob says "Be careful with that thing, who knows what will happen," the door is back.
When SpongeBob realizes how to defeat DoodleBob, he says "Paper!," his mouth opens but does not move.
When Patrick says "Where's the leak, ma'am?" the side of SpongeBob's belt disappears.
After SpongeBob says "See what I mean, Patrick?" he looks straight in front of him instead of at Patrick.
When DoodleBob's house is first shown, it has no interior and is see through. However, when DoodleBob draws a bowling ball, the interior of the house is visible.
