Synopsis
On the ocean's surface, an artist in a rowboat sketches feverishly. Unfortunately, his pencil slips from his hand and falls into the sea. As the artist cries out in horror, the French Narrator states the first rule of the artist at sea: "Always bring a spare pencil."

Down on the ocean floor, SpongeBob and Patrick are playing "Rock-Paper-Scissors" using bubbles when the pencil suddenly lands in between them. SpongeBob and Patrick, at first terrified of the large artifact, start to doodle with it. They soon come to discover that whatever they draw with the pencil is brought to life, and thus dub it the "Magic Pencil."

SpongeBob soon draws "DoodleBob," a sketch version of himself intended to fool Squidward. However, DoodleBob beats Squidward up and steals the magic pencil, going off to wreak havoc across the seascape. SpongeBob eventually turns the tide of battle and uses the pencil's eraser to rub out DoodleBob.

Unbeknownst to SpongeBob and Patrick, a lone arm remains, and in the night it steals the pencil back from SpongeBob and redraws its body. DoodleBob then attempts to erase SpongeBob, and during the struggle, the pencil is snapped in half. DoodleBob has the eraser and SpongeBob has the point. However, DoodleBob sharpens his half and SpongeBob accidentally flicks his pencil out of the window at Squidward's head. DoodleBob corners SpongeBob in front of a bookshelf, but steps on a sheet of paper and finds his foot absorbed into it.

SpongeBob and Patrick attempt to ambush DoodleBob, but fail when he appears too early before they could. SpongeBob eventually turns the tide of battle and uses the pencil's eraser to rub out DoodleBob.

Seizing his chance, SpongeBob closes DoodleBob in a book, in which the doodle is finally happy. The page with DoodleBob is then framed on a wall. Patrick arrives and listens to SpongeBob's musings on the nature of his doppelgänger, taking SpongeBob's photograph for the doodle. They decide to send the magic pencil back from where it came, shooting it back up to the distraught artist.

With his drawing instrument returned, the artist excitedly prepares to begin a new masterpiece, but when the pencil meets the canvas, the lead snaps. As the artist cries out once more, the French Narrator states the second rule of the artist at sea: "Always bring a pencil sharpener."

Trivia
General
General
*Although this episode premiered in 2002, it was made in 2001 according to the credits.
*SpongeBob is colored in a noticeably darker shade of yellow in this episode.
*The artist at sea is Doug Lawrence, a main writer on the show. He also voices Plankton, Potty the Parrot (since season 10), and many other characters.
**This also occurs in "Krusty Love" and "Sailor Mouth," though he's a slightly brighter shade of yellow in those episodes.
*The pencil shown in the live-action version is longer while the animated version is shorter.
*This is the first episode for two things:
*Patrick's question on whether it's DoodleBob's birthday can actually be answered in the affirmative, as it is still the day of DoodleBob's creation.
**The first episode where Paul Tibbitt provides a voice for a character.
*Even though DoodleBob speaks total gibberish, at one point he is heard speaking English when he says, "You doodle! Me SpongeBob!"
**The first episode to use the tracks "Lonely Stranger" and "Fancytale."
*According to The Ultimate SpongeBob SpongeBash marathon's Celebrity Favorites, Tony Hawk rated this as his favorite SpongeBob SquarePants episode.
*This is the last episode for two things:
*There is an online game based on this episode called Saves Bikini Bottom.
**The last episode to credit Walt Dohrn and Paul Tibbitt as directors.
**There is a Nintendo DS game called Drawn to Life: SpongeBob SquarePants Edition that is based on this episode.
**The last episode to have Chris Headrick as a storyboard director.
***There are four books based on this episode called Don't Pencil Me In!, Stick Together!, DoodleBob, and DoodlePants!
*The artist at sea is portrayed by Doug Lawrence, one of the main writers on the show and the voice of Plankton, Larry the Lobster, Potty the Parrot (starting from "Feral Friends"), and Fred, among others.
*There's a sequel to this episode named "Doodle Dimension."
*The pencil is longer in live-action compared to its animated version.
*Patrick in this episode has spawned a ton of memes on the internet including:

*Squid Doodle's grumbling was reused from "Welcome to the Chum Bucket," where the mutant patty created by SpongeBob comes to life and makes the same grumbling noises.
**Coincidentally, they are both sister episodes.
*The scene where DoodleBob throws a drawing of a bowling ball at Patrick is later seen in the video game Nicktoons Movin.

***In the Russian dub, this joke was changed. SpongeBob says, "Where are you, Patrick?" and Patrick says, "In Finland!"
*"Good night, sweet prince" is said again by Squidward in "I ♥ Dancing."
***In the Finnish dub, Patrick says, "Suomi!" which means "Finland!" in Finnish.

Errors
Errors
*At the start of the episode, the artist is seen making many strokes on the canvas. But when he gets his pencil back at the end of the episode, the canvas is blank. It's possible that he replaced the canvas during the time SpongeBob had the pencil.

*Since the pencil is made out of wood, it shouldn't have sunk to the bottom of the sea.
*In the opening credits, the label "storyboard directed by" is miscapitalized as "Storyboard directed by." The labels in the opening credits are usually not capitalized.
*While the pencil was falling towards Bikini Bottom, SpongeBob and Patrick were playing Rock-Paper-Scissors with bubbles. However, when the pencil crashes into the sea floor, the bubble blowers and bubble fluid are gone.
*The pencil sinks to the bottom of the sea instead of floating on water, despite it being made of wood.
*After DoodleBob draws a hole in front of his house, SpongeBob and Patrick glitch into the frame.
*While the pencil is falling towards Bikini Bottom, SpongeBob and Patrick are playing Rock-Paper-Scissors with bubbles. However, when the pencil crashes into the sea floor, the bubble blowers and bubble fluid are gone.
*During the part where SpongeBob and Patrick are watching DoodleBob, SpongeBob's belt is missing. After Patrick says, "that stupid tie!" and SpongeBob clears his throat, Patrick says, "Oh, but it looks good on you SpongeBob," and then SpongeBob and Patrick both gasp when they see what DoodleBob is doing. As they gasp, SpongeBob's belt appears for a second and then disappears again.
*When SpongeBob and Patrick panic at the sight of the pencil, every time SpongeBob runs off-screen, he runs to the right side of the screen, then when he reappears, he is at the left side. The same happens with Patrick, except he runs to the left side and then reappears at the right side.

*Patrick being hit in the head with various objects by DoodleBob and saying random things. In Indonesian airings, these scenes, along with SpongeBob's early attempt in erasing DoodleBob, originally removed completely due to save time for ads. With the runtime in recent airings is lengthened, they eventually reinstated albeit with some censorships due to excessive violence.

Characters

Synopsis

On the ocean's surface, an artist in a rowboat sketches feverishly. Unfortunately, his pencil slips from his hand and falls into the sea. While screaming "No!," the French Narrator states the first rule of the artist at sea: "Always bring a spare pencil."

File:Frankendoodle 077.png
"Aww, look at him. Ain't he a doll?"

Down on the ocean floor, SpongeBob and Patrick are playing "Rock-Paper-Scissors" with bubbles when the pencil suddenly lands in between them. SpongeBob and Patrick, at first terrified of the large artifact, start to doodle with it. They soon discover that whatever they draw with the pencil comes to life, and thus dub it the "magic pencil."

SpongeBob soon draws "DoodleBob," a sketch version of himself intended to fool Squidward. However, DoodleBob beats Squidward up and steals the magic pencil, going off to wreak havoc across the seascape. SpongeBob and Patrick attempt to ambush DoodleBob, but fail when he appears too early before they could. SpongeBob eventually turns the tide of battle and uses the pencil's eraser to rub out DoodleBob.

File:Frankendoodle 169.png

Unbeknownst to SpongeBob and Patrick, a lone arm remains, and in the night it steals the pencil back from SpongeBob and redraws its body while adding his angry eyebrows. DoodleBob then attempts to erase SpongeBob, and during the struggle, the pencil snaps in half.

Knowing it's too dangerous in the wrong hands, they decide to send the magic pencil back from where it came, shooting it back up to the distraught artist.

With his drawing instrument returned, the artist excitedly prepares to begin a new masterpiece, but when the pencil meets the canvas, the lead snaps. As the French Narrator states the second important rule of the artist at sea, "Always bring a pencil sharpener," the artist screams "No!" again.

Reception

"SpongeBob creates an evil doodle of himself with a magic pencil he finds. I actually feel sorry for the 'monster' when he has to be erased. Another semi-creepy one! Producer Paul Tibbett[sic] does Frankendoodle's[sic] voice."
