This article is about the relationship between SpongeBob SquarePants and Squidward Tentacles.

Overview

Squidward is usually shown to be annoyed with SpongeBob. SpongeBob often sees Squidward as a close friend. He even had tried to ruin SpongeBob's life and relationship, but despite all this, Squidward still cares for SpongeBob (although he hardly shows it).

Interactions throughout the series

As seen in "Truth or Square," Squidward was once living a happy life in Bikini Bottom with a fancy garden next to his house. One day, a pineapple fell off a boat and crushed his garden, immediately becoming the home of SpongeBob SquarePants after he moved into the neighborhood. Patrick appeared to have already been living next door to Squidward sometime before the incident.

SpongeBob seems to be the character who Squidward is most annoyed by, but SpongeBob usually ignores this and is often very nice to Squidward despite he tends to annoy him, mostly by accident. However, there are times when Squidward goes too far with SpongeBob, Patrick, or both, like when he reads SpongeBob's secret diary in "Little Yellow Book," overreacts to his neighbors even when they try to help him, makes fun of them, acts quite hypocritical when he says that they're the worst neighbors ever, tried to destroy their friendship a couple of times and even tried to kill them a few times, with the episodes "Naughty Nautical Neighbors," "Good Neighbors," and "Sportz?" being examples of that.

Throughout the show, there have been some instances where SpongeBob was aware that Squidward was annoyed at him, such as in the episode "SpongeBob You're Fired," where Squidward asks SpongeBob if he knows he hates him and he replies "Yes, yes I do." In other occasions, SpongeBob is the one who gets mad at him. There are also a few instances in which SpongeBob feels concerned or worried for Squidward as well.

It was revealed when SpongeBob learned the combination to Mr. Krabs' safe which contains the secret formula, SpongeBob attached the combination to one of his memories with Squidward so he wouldn't forget it; should he ever forget that memory, he will forget the combination as well.

While SpongeBob is usually very nice to Squidward in most episodes, there have been some instances where he has been mad at him and even acted mean towards him.

  • "Pizza Delivery" - SpongeBob stays committed to delivering the pizza even when a ravenous Squidward attempts to eat it.
  • "Employee of the Month" - SpongeBob is mad at and mean to Squidward throughout the episode, and they keep setting traps for each other while trying to get to the Krusty Krab to get the "Employee of the Month" reward.
  • "Scaredy Pants" - SpongeBob is annoyed when Squidward scares him and calls him "Scaredy Pants."
  • "I Was a Teenage Gary" - SpongeBob is disappointed that Squidward was negligent to Gary.
  • "Can You Spare a Dime?" - SpongeBob is mad at Squidward near the end of the episode because he was mooching off him, taking advantage of him, and refusing his hints on getting a new job for months. He then asks Mr. Krabs to hire him back so he could stop mooching off him and he (SpongeBob) could get back to his life.
  • "Best Day Ever" - SpongeBob was mad at Squidward when he thought was unable to perform his clarinet recital due to a broken reed, and he slaps Squidward and makes a new reed with his tooth and demands him to play. He also chews out his friends (Squidward included) for making him lose his perfect day after he misses Squidward's show.
  • "Krabs à la Mode" - SpongeBob runs over Squidward with his patty skates and hits Squidward with a Hockey stick to serve a Krabby Patty that was on him to a customer.
  • "Breath of Fresh Squidward" - Squidward turns nice after getting electrocuted by his electric fence. He makes Krabby Patties but SpongeBob dismisses them as being inadequate, though Mr. Krabs sees no problem with them. Mr. Krabs then makes Squidward employee of the month for the first time, which makes SpongeBob angry and jealous. When celebrating at Patrick's house, SpongeBob sees Squidward pogo dancing with Patrick. This makes SpongeBob really angry and comes to the conclusion that Squidward is trying to steal Patrick from him. In retaliation, SpongeBob yells at him for trying to befriend Patrick and orders Squidward to make his own best friend. This makes Squidward very sad, but he also turns back to normal upon touching his electric fence again.
  • "Blackened Sponge" - SpongeBob insults Squidward by calling him weak, though he likely didn't mean it as he was putting on a "tough guy" act at the time to cover up the clumsiness that led to his black eye.
  • "Patty Caper" - SpongeBob is mad at Squidward and accuses him of stealing the Krabby Patty secret formula.
  • "Choir Boys" - When Squidward is excited about his choir, SpongeBob ruins it by coming in while singing, which the fish find beautiful and open the choir for SpongeBob. In the end, SpongeBob makes Squidward flip the pages with a bitter look on his face.
  • "Pineapple Fever" SpongeBob prevents Squidward from leaving his boundary and soon chases after him when he gets past. They also act like animals when fighting over food, but when a burger gets stuck to the ceiling, they immediately stop and make up.
  • "A Day Without Tears" - After SpongeBob makes a bet with Squidward to not cry once until midnight, he overhears Squidward say he wants to win the bet, causing him to realize Squidward is going to cheat and make him cry himself, and he does whatever he can to hold in his tears whatever it takes.
  • "Little Yellow Book" - SpongeBob is shocked when he sees Squidward reading his diary in front of all the customers and runs out crying. Later when Squidward is locked in a stockade for his actions, SpongeBob forgives Squidward and reveals he only read his work diary, which he got published and became a number one best seller. Unfortunately, Squidward starts reading the secret personal diary unguarded, which upsets SpongeBob more.
  • "Squid Defense" - SpongeBob and Sandy teach Squidward karate after he was robbed and want him to understand the true art of karate: only use it in self-defense. Afterward, he ignores their instructions and used karate aggressively against a man who was giving back his groceries. Both SpongeBob and Sandy were very disappointed and almost mad at him, with SpongeBob even saying to him to be ashamed of himself.
  • The Whole Tooth - SpongeBob and Patrick punish Squidward by forcing him to eat chum after Squidward loses the bet. SpongeBob and Patrick were also angry after figuring out that Squidward attempted to destroy their friendship.
  • "Ma and Pa's Big Hurrah" - When SpongeBob is trying to act mature, he yells at Squidward for playing the clarinet in the middle of the day. Squidward is caught off guard by this.

Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years

  • "To Pop a Bubble" - SpongeBob is about to accuse Squidward of popping Bubble Buddy, but Squidward tells him to accuse someone else.
  • "Parasite Pals" - When Paris eats Squidward's food, Squidward calls him out for it, and SpongeBob ignores him.

Comics

  • Not Dolls! - SpongeBob was offended when Squidward called his new Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy action figures "dolls."
