Squidward-Patrick relationship

From SpongeBob Wiki

The Squidward-Patrick relationship is a relationship throughout the series. Squidward is usually shown to have a considerable dislike towards Patrick which is real unlike his relationship with SpongeBob, where he pretends to dislike him when he actually enjoys his company and cares about him. His dislike would grow in the later episodes, with Squidward becoming ruder to Patrick despite him doing nothing wrong. Though, once in a while, Squidward occasionally shows kindness towards Patrick under certain circumstances.

Interactions throughout the series

Despite Squidward's hate towards him, Patrick is more likely to be mean to Squidward. Sometimes, Patrick thinks Squidward does not like them, as seen in "Jellyfishing." Another example is in "Wishing You Well," where Squidward and Patrick begin pushing each other and engage in a fight.

It should also be noted that Patrick has a habit of ignoring Squidward - for example, in "Buried in Time," Squidward rejects Rocky from being placed in the time capsule, but Patrick begins to do it anyway.

Times where Patrick has been mean to Squidward

While Patrick considers Squidward a friend and is usually oblivious of his hatred, he is far more likely to confront him than SpongeBob, as well as being capable of detecting his sarcasm and malice more often.

  • "Sandy's Rocket" - Patrick and SpongeBob get disgusted from seeing Squidward and they shoot him with a net gun for believing he was an alien.
  • "I Was a Teenage Gary" - After Squidward turns into a snail, Patrick throws a boot at him for "meowing" too much.
  • "Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy IV" - He thinks a shrunken Squidward is an action figure and tries to play with him until SpongeBob tells Patrick what occurred. However, he still attempts to punch Squidward with "a giant fist" anyway.
  • "Jellyfishing" - Patrick repeatedly yells at Squidward to "Firmly Grasp It!" and stabs through Squidward's hand with the jellyfishing net.
  • "Home Sweet Pineapple" - Patrick asks if it is time to ruin Squidward's day and tells SpongeBob not to start without him.
  • "Frankendoodle" - Patrick was laughing that the doodle beat up Squidward.
  • "Club SpongeBob" - When SpongeBob tells Squidward it could be worse, Patrick insults Squidward by saying "you could be bald and have a big nose."
  • "Snowball Effect" - Patrick was repeatedly pelting Squidward with snowballs.
  • "The Great Snail Race" - Patrick insists that his rock will beat Squidward's purebred snail. He also has mistaken Squidward's last name.
  • "Pranks a Lot'" - Patrick and SpongeBob scare Squidward into believing they were ghosts with their invisible Spray, causing Squidward to run in horror.
  • "Krusty Towers" - Patrick showers Squidward with many demanding requests and gives him a rock as a tip instead of money.
  • "Wishing You Well" - Patrick antagonizes Squidward by chanting "Ho ho ho" to scare him thinking "claustrophobic" means fear of Santa Claus. Patrick pushes Squidward and starts a fight with him. The former is the victor.
  • "Big Sister Sam" - Patrick and Sam refer to both Squidward and SpongeBob as "meanies," and argue with the latter two throughout the whole episode. However, Patrick sees Squidward was somewhat right after SpongeBob points it out to him.
  • "Restraining SpongeBob" - Patrick attacks Squidward, only stopping when SpongeBob tells him it's Squidward. This act results in Patrick knocking SpongeBob off of Squidward's restraining order and being put on it himself. To be fair, though, the only reason Patrick attacked Squidward in this episode was that Squidward was hit in the face with a seaberry pie earlier, which triggered his allergies and distorted his face to the point where Patrick didn't recognize Squidward.
  • "Little Yellow Book" - Patrick throws tomatoes at Squidward for reading SpongeBob's work diary, even though Patrick did the same thing and even made fun of SpongeBob for some of the things written in the diary. When Squidward reminds Patrick of this, Patrick says, "Blame everyone but yourself, that is so you!" He then throws another tomato at him.
  • "Smoothe Jazz at Bikini Bottom" - Patrick eats Squidward's concert ticket and his backstage passes.
  • "Patrick! The Game" - As the police arrive to arrest Squidward, Patrick writes a note saying that Squidward is a repeat offender and gives the note to the officer. Squidward is thankful for this at first, but after encountering a creepy inmate that Squidward had encountered earlier in the episode, Squidward asks for someone to say his name to set him free (as per the game's rules), to no avail.
  • "Mimic Madness" - When Squidward, along with Plankton, intends on hurting SpongeBob to make him stop mimicking others, Patrick angrily grabs him and demands them to leave him alone.
  • "Sanitation Insanity" - When Squidward and SpongeBob arrive at Patrick's house to collect his trash, Patrick stubbornly refuses to give it up. When they try again to take the trash, Patrick rips the arm off their garbage truck and starts a fight with them.
  • "Ink Lemonade" - Patrick intentionally keeps scaring Squidward to get his ink for his black lemonade and shows no remorse to Squidward.
  • "Mustard O' Mine" - Squidward and Patrick interact together most of the episode. When Squidward looks at the map, Patrick smears his brain on his shirt. Also during 'the last train of the night', Patrick tells Squidward to always watch the closing doors, annoying Squidward who hisses at him.
  • "Delivery to Monster Island" - At the beginning when Patrick can't decide what to order, he annoys Squidward who is waiting angrily for Patrick to order.
  • "Kreepaway Kamp" - Patrick drops a safe on Squidward's head when he mistakes him for an intruder.
  • "Painting with Squidward" - Patrick crushes Squidward's tentacles and makes a rude remark when called out for it.
  • "Reveille Revolution" - Patrick lists off a bunch of insults when trying to tell Squidward what he can improve on.

Times where Squidward has been nice to Patrick

Squidward is rarely nice to Patrick, having been hostile to him far more than to SpongeBob. However, there have been a few occasions where Squidward has acted nice towards Patrick. He generally sees Patrick as less annoying than SpongeBob, as he hardly pays him any mind.

  • "Naughty Nautical Neighbors" - Squidward expresses gratitude to Patrick after he saves him from choking to death on a fork, but immediately kicks him out for sleeping during his music session.
  • "SB-129" - After being in the past and the future, Squidward admits he misses SpongeBob and wants to go home. When he gets home, he sees SpongeBob and Patrick, saying to them, "You don't know how happy I am to see you guys." Though he quickly becomes annoyed by the fact that he invented jellyfishing.
  • "Fools in April" - When Squidward apologizes to SpongeBob, he admits that he likes Patrick, along with SpongeBob, Mr. Krabs, Sandy, etc.
  • "Christmas Who?" - Squidward, dressed as Santa Claus, sells his clock to Patrick, who mistakes it for a wristwatch.

  • "Squilliam Returns" - Squidward hires Patrick to take the hats of guests at the Krusty Krab.
  • "The Camping Episode" - After being warned multiple times about sea bears by SpongeBob and Patrick and attacked multiple times by one, Squidward finally believes and joins them in their anti-sea bear circle, which serves as a defense against attack. Squidward expresses gratitude to SpongeBob and Patrick for saving his life.
  • "Patrick SmartPants" - Squidward is impressed by Patrick's suddenly - but temporarily - heightened intelligence.

  • "Patrick's Coupon" - Squidward prevents Mr. Krabs from stealing Patrick's coupon, as he knew the latter was too naïve to realize he is being conned. Though Squidward later becomes angry with Patrick, as usual, this is because he had to explain to Patrick what Mr. Krabs was doing. Patrick eventually comprehends Squidward's explanation but becomes paranoid as a result.
  • "Spin the Bottle" - Squidward asks Patrick nicely what happened to him.
  • "Mustard O' Mine" - Squidward and Patrick interact together most of the episode. Squidward saves Patrick's life by making the latter eat a Krabby Patty. Also during the "Look at the Mustard Flow" song, they sing together with SpongeBob. Patrick also saves Squidward by 'not hurting'.

  • The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run - Squidward goes alongside Mr. Krabs, and Sandy to save SpongeBob and Patrick from being executed and helping them rescue Gary.
  • "Squisery" - Patrick saves Squidward's life when the two get trapped in the forest. They genuinely enjoy spending time together, and even dance around their cabin.
  • "Putt Up or Shut Up" - Squidward lets Patrick be his golf caddy.
  • "Who's Complaining?" - Squidward recruits SpongeBob and Patrick to help him fix complaints around camp.

The two team up to deliver papers, with Patrick turning out to do an alright job at it, even managing to track down Cecil and have him pay his debt. When awarded the trophy by the Newspaper King, Patrick splits it with Squidward, who accepts it. The two end up on good terms, continuing their route while chasing down Cecil again.

Trivia

  • Like with SpongeBob, it is revealed in "Ugh" and "Pest of the West" that their ancestors were friends, making it ironic that Squidward detests Patrick, but Patrick usually enjoys Squidward's company. Even then, though, Squidward's ancestors were still somewhat unfriendly towards Patrick sometimes.
