Synopsis

Cecil is excited about a big football game, waking Patrick up from his sleep. Cecil asks Patrick is he wants to hear a joke, but Bunny quickly shushes Patrick and pulls him aside. She tells him and Squidina that every 20 years, a comet known as the Dadsteroid passes by and unleashes an ancient plague, turning anyone who laughs at a dad joke into a dad. The only way to stay safe is to hide until it is over.

Bunny approaches GrandPat.

However, they all want the barbecue, so they wait until Cecil leaves to use the bathroom and eat the grilled shoe he is making. When he returns, Patrick and Squidina escape, but Bunny hears Cecil's dad joke and laughs, turning her into a dad. Patrick and Squidina cower until they approached by GrandPat, but they do not get his joke. They hear Cecil and Bunny and hide in the bathroom. GrandPat gets told a dad joke, which he laughs at, and he, Cecil, and Bunny open the bathroom door. Patrick and Squidina escape outside, where everyone is now a dad.

Sandy tells a joke that her dad used to tell.

Squidina's radio goes off, broadcasting an emergency message from Sandy asking for all non-dads to report to the Bikini Bottom Mall. To get there, Patrick and Squidina use grass to give themselves mustaches and plug their ears to pass through a crowd of dads. They meet Sandy at the mall, and Patrick's fake mustache reminds Sandy of her dad and a joke he used to tell. When she recites it, she laughs, and turns into a dad. She tells Patrick and Squidina a joke, and they run away to the Krusty Krab Stadium.

Patrick goes out to the stands to eat hot dogs while Squidina catches the ball and runs. She scores a touchdown and Patrick cheers, throwing his flag into the air. It punctures a blimp, which flies off into space and knocks the Dadsteroid off course. Everyone turns back to normal, but then a Momet starts flying past. Sandy gives another radio broadcast warning against going shopping with your mom. At that point, Patrick agrees, and turns into a mom himself.

Patrick seeing Dad Squidward and saying that the look "actually kind of suits him" is one that Miggs likes and "was sure [it] was gonna get cut."^[3]

General

This episode was paired with SpongeBob SquarePants episode "Stuck in an Elevator" during the original American airing^[4] but has since been airing with "Get Ouch."
- This marks the first time since The Tidal Zone in January 2023 where an episode of the main series is paired with an episode from a spin-off.
This is the second time that Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie is referenced in the franchise, and the first time in traditional animation, as Pa Cheeks shows up during Sandy's flashback when her dad told her a joke.
- One of the writers for this episode, Kaz, also wrote the story for the movie.
Despite The Patrick Star Show taking place before the main series, the Krusty Krab Stadium, which was first established in "The Sewers of Bikini Bottom," appears in this episode.
This is the second season 3 episode to have "day of the" in its title, following "Day of the Dartfish."
