Synopsis
One morning, Patrick is trying to watch The Sir Urchin & Snail Fail Show!, but his stomach keeps grumbling. He goes to the fridge to find food, but everything left is rotten and moldy. He decides to eat it anyways, and goes on to do his show. After a pet makeover with Tinkle, he suffers severe stomach pain and Squidina goes to help him. Patrick opts to segue into a home wellness segment instead, and opens himself up. His stomach jumps out and calls him out for the disgusting food he eats. Patrick's heart, intestines, and lungs follow suit with the stomach and march out of the room. Patrick is reduced to a limp, shapeless state without his organs, and a gust of wind blows him outside.
Patrick enjoys his new freedom, going camping with Cecil and acting as a flag on Slappy's boat. GrandPat uses him as a parachute, but he gets shredded by a passing plane. Meanwhile, his organs are getting away after a bank robbery, but crash into Bubble Bass. Invigorated by their new freedom without Patrick, they choose to visit a night club next. Back home, Patrick feels the negative effects of his new state when Bunny uses him to clean the pipes and the toilet. Looking to replace his organs, he swallows a blender and a microwave. He ends up eating everything in the kitchen, becoming massive and grossly misshapen. When he goes downtown, he receives admiration for his new look.
At the club, Patrick's organs are taken to a "VIP lounge" by a masked man, who turns out to be a butcher for a deli, with the lounge actually being a meat locker. The organs accept that they did need Patrick after all. Patrick happens to walk into the deli, and the organs try to get his attention. He neglects them to get a bag of chips instead. The organs assemble and chase after Patrick, who crashes into a junkyard.
Due to the amount of appliances in him, a giant magnet picks Patrick up. He is hesitant to return to his old life because of how much he likes his new body, but is moved by the organs' speech that they need him. He dislodges himself from the magnet and swallows his organs. As Patrick is about to tell his stomach what he learned from the experience, he is crushed under the pile of appliances that were stuck to the magnet. Badly injured, he comments that he needs new organs.

Storyboards
- Boarded by Gabe Del Valle[3][6] and plussed by Davey Jarrell,[2][11] Amanda Donahue,[4] and David Shair.[12]
Production notes
Davey Jarrell:
- Jarrell said it was a "distinct honor" to plus Mike Pelensky and Gabe Del Valle's "amazing" rough boards under the supervision of "seasoned pro" Bob Camp.[11]
Gabe Del Valle:
- Del Valle mainly worked on the second half of this episode, which was his explanation for why Patrick may have looked odd when he replaced his organs.[6]
- This was one of his favorite episodes to board, getting to channel his loves of "loves of body horror, rebellious organs and spooky meats."[6]
- According to him, the reason why Patrick's brain makes a gag cameo in the episode is because he was going be an actual character, but then "[he and Mike Pelensky] then doubted if [Patrick] even has a brain to begin with."[13]
Mike Pelensky:
- Pelensky personally believed that this is where he and Gabe Del Valle's writing hit its stride, and their best was yet to come. He thanked Bob Camp and Tim Prendergast for their "superb storyboard supervision!"[14]
David Shair:
- Shair's joke pitch based on the episode: "So an Intestines, Lungs, Stomach, and Heart walk into a bar…and the bartender says "you gotta be kidney-ing me?!" After the joke, he then said "Okay, I'll workshop that joke some more."[12]
Bob Camp:
- Camp said that he loved this episode's storyboard.[3]
Amanda Donahue:
- Donahue said this was their first "lil bit of body horror and work on a "gross up" in the show.[4]

Trivia
General
- This is the first episode of the franchise to premiere on Independence Day in the United States.
- Coincidentally, this episode's plot is about Patrick's organs gaining independence from him.
- According to storyboard artist/writer Gabe Del Valle, this episode may be classified as a holiday special.[6]
- Mike Pelensky also hinted at this episode being a holiday special, stating "What better way to commemorate Independence Day than watching Patrick's stomach, heart, intestines, and lungs walk out and claim their independence? I certainly can't think of any!"[14]
- My leg!: When Patrick's organs drive into Fred on the road, he utters his famous catchphrase.
- Animation from "Library Cards" is reused when Patrick is watching The Sir Urchin & Snail Fail Show. Originally, the episode Patrick was watching seemed to be a birthday special, as shown by Snail Fail's party hat and the present he hits Sir Urchin with.
- This episode was initially called "Ollie Ollie Organ Free," with "-ie"s ending "olly" instead of a "y."[2][4][15]
- Ouchie's food dish can be seen in the kitchen when Patrick eats junk to get new organs.
Cultural references
- The title is a pun on the phrase "Olly olly oxen free."
- Some of the smiling meats found in the episode reference the Irish delicacy Billy Roll,[16] which because a popular meme on Reddit during the summer 2015.[17]
Episode references
- When Patrick eats appliances in the kitchen, Squidward's painting from "Unreal Estate" appears.
- Patrick's stomach has the same appearance as in "Fun & Done!," although it is more angry and unwilling to cooperate with Patrick.
- The intro card for "Well! Well! Well!" has Patrick drawn in a similar style to his thought bubble self in "Just in Time for Christmas" and "A Root Galoot."
- The hospital gown that Patrick wears is the same one that Squidina's home ec teacher wears in "Home ECCH!"
- GrandPat wears his stuntman outfit from "Pat-a-thon," "A Space Affair to Remember," and "Stuntin'" while using an organless Patrick as a parachute to fly across the Bikini Bottom sky.
- The bouncer for the club is the same one who protects King Neptune's castle in "Neptune's Ball." He would later return in "The Patrick Show Cashes In."
- The background in the scene where Patrick shows off his new body to his parents is reused from "The Haunting of Star House."[1]
Errors
- When Squidina prepares to perform surgery on Patrick, the lines on her skirt are black instead of dark red.
- When the butcher says, "excellent," his eyes are white instead of yellow.
