Synopsis

After a long day of work, a tired SpongeBob and Squidward exit the Krusty Krab. Mr. Krabs asks them about their plans for the weekend: SpongeBob plans to polish Gary's shell, while Squidward plans to attend a dance performance. Mr. Krabs invites them to Goo Lagoon to ride on a yacht instead, to which both accept. The next morning, SpongeBob and Squidward arrive at Goo Lagoon, and Squidward questions where the yacht is. Krabs tells them that the yacht has to be built first like sailors in his navy days would do, tasking SpongeBob and Squidward to build it while he "supervises" them (read: takes a nap while the other two do all the work).

SpongeBob finds the instructions for building a yacht.

While giving Squidward the instructions for building the yacht, they fly out of SpongeBob's hands and into a nearby boat engine. With the instructions missing, SpongeBob concludes that he and Squidward will instead need to follow their hearts. SpongeBob starts out by building the yacht's mast, but Squidward instead suggests that he should start with the frame using wooden planks. The turbulent building process winds up harming Squidward many times over thanks to SpongeBob's clumsiness with handling the ship parts and the unpredictable behavior of the planks. Though the duo's final product looks poorly built, Krabs quickly turns it into a proper ship with some white paint and proclaims it as the "S.S. Sea-cret Formula."

After SpongeBob and Squidward work together to drag the boat into the lagoon, a massive tidal wave sets the ship afloat properly and Krabs reels the duo in. Squidward is happy to have some time to himself to relax, but Krabs reveals that the intent of creating this yacht was for it to serve as a lagoon-side Krusty Krab, selling their items at even higher prices than on land. Upset with this turn of events, Squidward refuses to work, but Krabs forces him into his standard position as cashier working alongside SpongeBob in the window behind him.

Though Squidward predicts that there won't be anyone to serve out at sea, Patrick quickly proves him wrong as he washes up on board. SpongeBob serves him and Patrick eats the patties through his snorkel, before diving into the water. Mr. Krabs and SpongeBob start selling patties to all the beachgoers but discover an island that turns out to be the butt of Bubble Bass. Attempting to evade the threat only results in even more damage and the destruction of the ship's exterior, though they successfully serve him as the crew's boat sinks.

As Goo Lagoon is about to close for the day, the boat encounters one last customer: the wise kraken, who lifts the yacht up from the water and starts joking with the crew about his hunger for Krabby Patties. SpongeBob and Squidward are disgusted and confused as the episode ends.

• This episode was originally called "Gone Boatin'," a pun on the phrase "gone fishin'."
• This episode was originally scheduled to premiere on Friday, November 18, 2022 in the United States at 7:00 PM, but it instead briefly got replaced with the premiere of the Monster High episode "Werewolf Weekend" before being replaced again with the premiere of the 2021 Nickelodeon film PAW Patrol: The Movie.
  • In Latin America, this episode was also originally going to air on November 16, 2022 at 3:30 PM, but was replaced with an airing of "Squidferatu." However, the episode was later rescheduled and premiered on the 18th in Brazil.
    • If they kept the original American airdate, this would have been the first episode for Brazil to premiere the same date as its USA airing since "SpongeBob's Last Stand" on April 22, 2010.
• This episode's original American airing served as a lead-out to the Nickelodeon premiere of the 2015 Illumination Studios movie, Minions, while it served as a lead-in to the Nickelodeon premiere of the Rugrats reboot half-hour special, "Rescuing Cynthia."
• The title card for this episode is similar to that of "Patrick the Mailman," except this one is on a pirate ship instead of a mailbox.
• SpongeBob's blue swim trunks make a return in this episode, having not been seen for 16 years since "Hocus Pocus."

• Mr. Krabs' episode-starring Krabby Patty-selling craft has various trivial quirks in of itself:
  • The S.S. Sea-cret Formula's design is based on '30s yachts.
  • The idea for the ship being a giant model kit was also supposed to give off the idea that a human one had sunken into the ocean.
  • The "S.S." titling that was used for the boat was also used in promotional stands and posters for The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, with SpongeBob and the gang in a boat featuring the text "S.S. Save Gary" engraved onto it.
  • Despite Mr. Krabs being against "pre-made vessels," a part of the ship (the frame) is already pre-made.
• In the Dutch dub, due to Jan Nonhof retiring from voice acting, Squidward is voiced by Louis Van Beek starting in this episode.

  • This is the second episode to reference this dance, after "Pat Hearts Squid."
    • The dance was also referenced in the credits for The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water.
• In one of the first shots of Goo Lagoon, the same girl with water wings and her mother who were at the pool in "Old Man Patrick" appear on the shore.
• Squidward's vacation outfit in this episode is based on the one he wears at the end of "Plane to Sea."
• Incidental 46's seashell bra and sunglasses-wearing variant from "Bubble Buddy" returns in this episode.
• When Mr. Krabs yells at Squidward for wasting his lumber, he stutters on the word "lumber" in a similar manner to PlanKrab, who appears in the episode "The Krusty Bucket."
• Carol, Loser 2, and Loser 3 can be seen hanging out at the beach together which references their role as playing together in the Beach Band in "Ripped Pants." However, Carol takes the appearance of her normal variant instead of taking the appearance as Loser 1.
• Carlos eel can be seen eating ice cream, referencing his role in "Walking Small."
• The design of the boat rental stand was inspired by a painting of the Fun House from "Valentine's Day."
  • The painting of the Fun House was one of Ian Vazquez's favorite from the series, explaining its similarities and inclusion.
• The showgirls found in the episode are the same as the one from "As Seen on TV."
• Two kids are seen playing in the orca kid's mouth, like they did in "SpongeGuard on Duty." The kids were Incidental 103 and Incidental 150 in "SpongeGuard on Duty" while in this episode the kids were Incidental 103 and Incidental 153.

• This episode's title is a pun on the phrase "abandon ship(s)."

• Squidward's dance at the start of the episode, where he faces left and holds his arms at his sides while moving his legs wildly, is a reference to 5's in the 1965 Christmas special, A Charlie Brown Christmas.
• When SpongeBob fails to hammer down a nail, he imitates one of The Three Stooges.

• When Squidward is hooked up from the sea by Mr. Krabs, he looks similar to a blobfish when it's taken out of the water.
  • Squidward (as well as SpongeBob, Patrick, and Mr. Krabs) also breathe the same way he does in the season 2 episode, "Pressure."
• The ending scene is similar to the Sinking of the Titanic in three ways:
  • SpongeBob sees Bubble Bass as a 'Butt-berg', similar to the iceberg the ship hit.
  • The S.S. Sea-cret Formula sinks just like the ship, only in the film, it sank slowly, while in this episode, it sank faster.
  • Squidward plays "Taps" on his clarinet, similar to how the captain plays it when the ship sank its final pieces under the water.
    • The 1997 film, Titanic is referenced in lots of ways in SpongeBob SquarePants, some physically like "Bottle Burglars," and how it sank in many episodes.
• The Kraken has the appearance and mannerisms of the late stand-up comedian Rodney Dangerfield.
