Urban legends/creepypasta

SpongeBoy mop

For many years, it was originally thought that the name SpongeBoy was copyrighted by a mop company.[1] Various interviews with Tom Kenny, SpongeBob's voice actor, had stated the mop rumor, where he believed that the name SpongeBoy was used by a mop company.[2] A YouTube user named Kid Leaves Stoop uploaded a video on September 7, 2022 that had lots of strong evidence to debunk the theory and that the name SpongeBoy was actually taken by an art themed pencil product. A character named SpongeBoy in Flaming Carrot Comics was also believed to be a reason for the name change.

Deleted scenes

"Reef Blower"

It was rumored that the characters don't have lines in this episode because the sound equipment was damaged and was rewritten to be completely silent. On June 10, 2022, in tweets by former crew member Jay Lender on Twitter, it was confirmed that the episode did not feature any spoken dialogue because it was made to extend "Help Wanted" to a full half-show.[3] However, because the episodes were produced separately, Screen Actors Guild rules mandated paying the actors a second set of session fees.[4] This would have cost around $2,500 USD at the time of production, leading to the choice to forgo dialogue.[5]

"I Was a Teenage Gary"

There was a rumor that in the original airing, there was a scene showing Squidward's transformation into a snail. It has since been proven false as of June 12, 2016, confirmed by a YouTube user named 90sGiveMeGoosebumps, who has a tape with the original airing of this episode.[6] As further proof, he also uploaded a clip of All That cast member Lori Beth Denberg introducing this episode as brand new.[7] In addition, Vincent Waller said on Twitter that the so-called deleted scene was never even drawn in the storyboard of this episode.[8] On October 15, 2022, writer Steve Fonti on Instagram posted the original story outline which revealed that the Squidward snail transformation scene was planned at some point.[9] However, this scene never made it past the outline and was never animated or materialized.

"Your Shoe's Untied"

There was a rumor that it was released standalone on "The American Cartoons" on June 30, 2000. However, by 2020, it was revealed that "The American Cartoons" does not exist.[10]

"Life of Crime"

There was a rumor that SpongeBob was originally going to say "no more getting nailed" and Patrick would nail a plank to his head. According to many researchers of lost media, there is a good chance of it being a misinterpretation of a scene from "My Pretty Seahorse." This was debunked by Vincent Waller, saying that it doesn't sound real to him, and that it sounds like someone making a controversy for attention.[11]

"Christmas Who?"

There was a rumor that the "Christmas Who?" special aired in the early 2000s on CBS as a holiday special. No evidence supporting this has been found so far, though this confusion might stem from CBS airing holiday specials for Rugrats in 2001.

"Shanghaied"

There was a rumor that, in the original airing or in production, as Squidward falls into the Fly of Despair in the third shot, bones and human remains appear in the background. This remains to be unconfirmed, but there is a good chance this is false; it's likely confusion from the viewers who thought the original airing was the former instead of spaghetti and meatballs.[12][13]

There was an additional rumor that the episode might've been banned in the USA, due to the bones and human remains appearing on the fly of despair in the original airing. This was also proven to be false, due to the fact that Nickelodeon didn't premiere its sister episode "Gary Takes a Bath" at the time after its airing, and various airings on Nicktoons TV in 2002.

"Gary Takes a Bath"

There was a rumor that the episode was banned from airing in the United States due to executives thinking that the Subliminal message girl might scare children away. This was proven to be false due to various airings on Nicktoons in 2002.

"The Secret Box"

For years, many people claimed that they saw Patrick revealing the embarrassing photo of SpongeBob in the original airing and early reruns, saying the photo was of SpongeBob wearing a lampshade over his head or only wearing his underwear. A user from The Lost Media Wiki, Sloucher112, claims that the photo in the original airing is of SpongeBob passing out from drinking too much eggnog in his Christmas sweater and wearing a lampshade, surrounded by cartons of eggnog, while Sandy and Squidward giggle in the background.[14][15] As of May 29, 2022, this was proven false by Vimeo user JTAG, who has a tape of the original airing.

File:OG
The original airing on September 7, 2001, which proves the reveal of the embarrassing photo is fake.

"The Bully"

There was a rumor that, in the original airing, there was a scene of SpongeBob and Patrick playing leapfrog while being beaten up by Flats instead of SpongeBob working at the Krusty Krab. This was soon proven false and was likely a misinterpretation of a scene from "Bucket Sweet Bucket."

"Krusty Krab Training Video"

There was a rumor that, in the original airing, there was a scene with the narrator saying, "It must never be discussed" when the formula is about to be revealed, then SpongeBob tripped. On August 28, 2018, the deleted scene was confirmed to have been false by a YouTube user named CDCB2, who has a tape with the original airing of this episode.[16]

"Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy V"

For many years, there was a rumor that, in the original airing, there was a shot of a plane exploding in the sky, which got cut due to excessive violence or out of respect of the victims from the attacks on September 11, 2001. This was proven false in 2014. The attacks occurred months before the episode aired, and the rumor was likely a misinterpretation of the storyboards.

"As Seen on TV"

There's a scene where SpongeBob sticks his nose from the ground, to which Mr. Krabs says "Quit fooling and come on out." However due to a certain image, many people falsely stated that Mr. Krabs says "Please tell me that is your nose.", a sexual joke.

"Clams"

There was a rumor that, in the original airing, SpongeBob says, "actually, it's Coral Blue Number 4" before getting hit by Squidward, and it was changed to Coral Blue Number 3 in later airings. Both of these scenes were proven to be false.

There were also rumors that, in the original airing, that there was a scene of Mr. Krabs talking on the phone to his deceased parents, likely a misinterpretation of the storyboard and unused production artwork.

The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie

For many years, fans of the show thought that the first movie was meant to be the chronological finale of the series, and that every episode that was released after the first movie actually takes place prior to it, creating a continuity. Fans came to this conclusion due to the amount of consecutive Employee of the Month awards SpongeBob won, which is 374. After counting that, this shows that SpongeBob worked at the Krusty Krab for at least 31 years. When asked about whether that was the case, Vincent Waller on Twitter replied that he's not aware of that. He later rephrased his statement by saying that the first movie was never really meant to be a chronological finale by stating that the show doesn't have any form of continuity.[17][18][19][20]

File:The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie 780.png

A lot of people have misremembered the Goofy Goober guitar design with the following discrepancies:

  • The color being either white or purple.
  • The guitar shape being v-shaped, star-shaped, or a double guitar.

The effect was noted online as early as 2019 and went viral on TikTok in late 2022.

"SquidBob TentaclePants"

There was a rumor, that the episode's ending was censored in the United States on some areas in Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky in Time Warner providers by Insight Communications. However this is not true as Insight Communications only provides digital video recording, high definition television, and Video-On Demand.[21][22]

"Dunces and Dragons"

The episode was rumored to have aired on Nickelodeon in Australia and New Zealand on February 16, 2006, 4 days before airing in the United States. But by August 2023, an Australian press release from July 2006 was discovered, says the episode premiered on July 29 on the same year[23], making this rumor to be debunked. This rumor also brought confusion, due to the episode premiered in New Zealand on a different channel from the same said date.[24]

"Karate Island"

For years, there were rumors that, in the original airing of this episode, there was a small amount of blood on Master Udon's face after getting beaten up by Sandy. Vincent Waller on Twitter eventually debunked this in 2018.[25]

"Wishing You Well"

There was a rumor that, in the original airing, a glitch occured where a few minutes of its sister episode "All That Glitters" is shown at the beginning and ending with SpongeBob at the therapist's office, before he says: "You can't rush perfection." This is likely false, however, due to confusion with both episodes during their premiere day on June 2, 2006.

"Friend or Foe"

There was a rumor that the episode premiered in Australia on November 19, 2006.[26] This is false, because there was no listing for the episode airing in the month of November 2006, nor anyone heard about this episode airing, likely due to confusion with various season 4 specials.

There was a rumor that it carried deleted scenes from the Australian airing, which is also false.[27]

"A Day Without Tears"

There was a rumor from TV Tropes that, in the original airing, after SpongeBob drops a Krabby Patty on the ground and throws it out, Squidward shouts different dialogue; according to the rumor, Squidward tells SpongeBob, "You know there's an old saying, SpongeBob." SpongeBob asks, "What is it?" Squidward answers, "Don't cry over a soiled Krabby Patty. And now may I give you a little word of advice... shut up!" and then SpongeBob starts crying more. This was soon debunked on November 15, 2023, by a YouTuber called TheSmartLucario, who has a copy of the original airing.

"License to Milkshake"

It was rumored that the song "Milkshake" by Kelis was going to play in the episode. This has yet to be confirmed and is unlikely to have happened due to licensing issues and the lewd nature of the song. This rumor might have also been mixed up with and related to a promo for the episode a day before it premiered, which actually does play a snippet of the song.[28]

"Snail Mail"

File:Gary Mail.jpg

It was thought that the original plot of this episode was about Gary delivering mail, due to a drawing posted on Twitter by Vincent Waller prior to the episode's premiere. He later confirmed that the episode was never originally about that.[citation needed]

Squidward's Suicide

File:Squidward's Suicide Title Card.jpg
The title card for the episode.

"Squidward's Suicide" (also known as "Red Mist") is an urban legend written by an anonymous user from 7chan on April 6, 2010. The video can be seen here. This story was extremely popular and widely circulated in the early 2010s, and it introduced phrases that would be used in "copycat" Internet stories to the point of cliché, such as "hyper-realistic."

The narrator of the story claims to have worked at Viacom (the company that owns Nickelodeon and its shows) and received early access to future SpongeBob episodes. He recounts his experience watching the episode with other interns.

The most commonly shared version recounts a disturbing and morbid episode (supposedly produced in lieu of "Fear of a Krabby Patty") with Squidward performing poorly at a clarinet recital. Squidward mourns his failure while the screen intermittently warps and shakes. During these periods, illegal photos of deceased children taken by a shadowy photographer briefly flash to serve as subliminal messages. After each period of shaking, Squidward's sobbing grows louder, the disturbing pictures stay on the screen longer, and blood runs down his face, which gets more and more realistic as time passes.

The story culminates with a scene of Squidward in his room, having shot himself in the head. A popular image associated with the story depicts Squidward with bloodshot eyes. The "lost" episode has been recreated several times and in different formats on YouTube.

The episode "SpongeBob in RandomLand" briefly features a character known as Red Mist Squidward, which is a direct reference to the story. Additionally, Ego Plum composed a music track specifically for this character's scene, titled "Red Mist Cue." Storyboard artist Adam Paloian, writer Kaz, and showrunner Vincent Waller all confirmed that the reference was made intentionally to poke fun at "truly silly, 'trying to be dark' fan fiction."[29] The scene featuring Red Mist Squidward was cut in the UK and Ireland airings[30], and was later replaced with Baby Squidward in US airings in November 2019 due to a Standards and Practices issue.[31]

SpongeBab

SpongeBab (also known as "SpengeBab") is a series of images that were posted on 4chan's /b/ board sometime in the mid-2000s, posting poorly drawn, grotesque, and disturbing drawings based on one of the characters. These images didn't gain popularity until November 2006, when a slideshow video was posted on YouTube. The video shows a talking hand puppet with images and fanart from the show, a stock image of two obese babies from the Guinness Book of World Records, and Bill Maher dressed up as Steve Irwin with the SpongeBob SquarePants theme song playing in the background. It then cuts to a series of grotesque images originating from the site, with the theme song and "Livin' in the Sunlight, Lovin' in the Moonlight" played backward along with distorted music playing. As of December 2019,[32] the original video has gained over 400,000 views until it was taken down by YouTube in November 2020 for violating Community Guidelines.

In the online game Tighty Whitey Tumble an unused sprite of a disturbingly screaming SpongeBob can be found in one of the game files, which could have been a reference to the meme's popularity.

SpongeBob's Fresh Start

SpongeBob's Fresh Start is a trollpasta. The story has a similar plot to Squidward's Suicide. The only real difference between the stories is that it is a retelling of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air theme song but with SpongeBob instead of Will Smith.

The Story of Evil SpongeBob

The story is a parody of killeryoshis's The Story of Evil Elmo. The story starts by saying that SpongeBob turned evil; he killed all his friends, including the Bikini Bottomites, committed crimes like bank robberies, bombings, drug dealing, and shooting innocent fish. This video was taken down by YouTube due to violating community guidelines, and the channel that made the video has been terminated since 2017.

SpongeBob Bootleg Episode

File:SB Bootleg.jpg
File:Spongebob Bootleg Episode (Creepypasta)
The original upload on YouTube.

The SpongeBob Bootleg Episode is a creepypasta about an edited version of "Dumped." The only image in it was a picture of SpongeBob with big, bloodshot eyes and no mouth. The rest was either color images or black screens. Most versions of the image are actually animated GIFs that feature SpongeBob blinking once the viewers stares at it long enough.

Plankton Got Served (Creepypasta)

Not to be confused with the working title for "One Coarse Meal."

This Creepypasta revolves around an alternative version to the episode "One Coarse Meal" that was supposedly available on the Nick.com website. This version of the episode, according to the viewer, actually has Plankton being run over by a bus after SpongeBob fails to convince him that Mr. Krabs was just using a Pearl disguise costume. Plankton is then sent to a purgatory-like area, with lots of whales swimming in the void, and sees his family there telling him to join them. Plankton also sees a light above him, but decides to plunge into the darkness.

The viewer also states that the reason why barely any footage of this version of the episode exists is because it was only up on the website for a rather extremely short amount of time, as the episode was then replaced with the actual episode.

Theh Storry Off Squidwarrrxxxx

"Theh Storry Off Squidwarrxxxx" is a trollpasta (poorly written creepypasta) made in 2017. It involves a viewer wanting to watch SpongeBob SquarePants on TV and instead watching an episode called "Theh Story Off Squidwarrrxxxx" They decide to watch the episode, which involves SpongeBob annoying Squidward, causing the latter to commit suicide by jumping out of his second floor window. After viewing the episode, the narrator's television set melts. This Trollpasta became semi-popular after PhantomStrider included it in his Top 6 Worst SpongeBob Creepypastas Video.

The trollpasta may have also been inspired by another trollpasta, which is also known as "EVIL PATRIXXX."

Faceless

File:FacelessSpongebobCreepypasta.png
The image associated with the creepypasta, being an edited frame from Chocolate with Nuts.

"Faceless" is a creepypasta created by an anonymous user in 2022. The story involves an individual receiving a mysterious SpongeBob VHS in the mail. It featured an episode that involved Squidward waking up in the middle of the night to go to work, when he noticed SpongeBob and Patrick weren't out. He hears muffled screaming and checks both of their houses, only to have SpongeBob and Patrick approach him, both having no faces. Squidward ran to the Krusty Krab screaming at the top of his lungs, only to see Mr. Krabs and the customers in the Krusty Krab also having no faces. He runs out of the Krusty Krab and makes it to Jellyfish Fields, where he became tired and fainted. Squidward then wakes up in a dark room and notices surgical tools on a table next to him. A dark figure approaches him and says in a calm voice, "This won't hurt that much." The screen cuts to black while sounds of Squidward screaming and bleeding play in the background. Squidward then wakes up back at Jellyfish Fields and tries to scream, only to reveal he no longer has a face.

The creepypasta gained popularity after being featured in a mod of the rhythm video game Friday Night Funkin' titled "Mistful Crimson Morning", which features several other SpongeBob creepypastas and horror media. The creepypasta received a good portion of remakes found on YouTube with some people believing it could work as an official SpongeBob episode, although with less disturbing subject matter.

A Day With SpongeBob SquarePants: The Movie

File:ADWSBSP.png
Supposed "DVD cover" for the movie.

A Day with SpongeBob SquarePants: The Movie is an nonexistent mockumentary that was said to be distributed by Reagal Films and MVD. The movie has been postponed, but the director plans to make the film through a crowdfunding effort. In this mockumentary, SpongeBob lives above ground like all Hollywood superstars. Afraid that SpongeBob is becoming old news, his boss runs a contest called "Spend a Day with SpongeBob." The contest makes SpongeBob the talk of the town, as thousands of kids enter to win. The lucky winner is Seth, and he is ecstatic about his day with SpongeBob. However, the day becomes a roller coaster ride as things don't go quite the way they planned. For a while, this film was said to be lost, until it was debunked, as it was proven that no such film ever existed.

The Bikini Bottom Horror

The Bikini Bottom Horror is a horror webcomic written by the Redditor u/stillinthesimulation on the subreddit r/ImSorryJon. The series originated with a comic parodying how starfishes eat in real life, with a deranged Patrick consuming SpongeBob with his ejected stomach.

SpongeBob Adult Party Cartoon

A rumor that Spike once approached Stephen Hillenburg to make a adult version of the show similar to Ren & Stimpy "Adult Party Cartoon" but was turned down by Stephen (who Nickelodeon sided with him).

Rumors about a fan who drowned trying to find SpongeBob

File:The Fan Who Drowned Trying to Visit SpongeBob - Cartoon Urban Legend (2002)
LSuperSonicQ's video on the topic

There were false rumors circulating that a child had tragically drowned in the ocean while attempting to search for SpongeBob in real life, which allegedly led to Nickelodeon canceling the series. However, these rumors were later confirmed to be entirely false, created by concerned parents who wanted to discourage their children from venturing into the ocean unsupervised. In reality, there have been no incidents directly linking the show to such tragic events.[33]

Rumors about SpongeBob ending

There were false rumors circulating that has announcements or images of SpongeBob ending. However, these rumors were later confirmed to be entirely false, created usually by trolls, or created for April Fools' Day.

7/25/2005

This creepypasta was inspired by a video by the same name by a YouTuber called "niceANDcool," which involves a person watching SpongeBob on the night of July 25, 2005, and seeing a disturbing glitch in the episode "Your Shoe's Untied," featuring a frame of SpongeBob's body floating in a black void. There's also another video which expands on the original video, detailing a broadcast glitch in "Gary Takes a Bath," which features a frame of SpongeBob and Gary smiling and staring at the screen. The creepypasta started gaining popularity when Youtuber PigPigGamer made a video detailing it, which you can view here.

Many people were fooled by the creepypasta and actually thought it was real, but it should be noted that no such incident happened as the episode "Your Shoe's Untied" did not air on Nickelodeon in that specific date according to the Nickstory Archives.

SpongeBob on Adult Swim

There was a long-standing, persistent rumor that the show was originally meant to be an adult cartoon; supposedly, it was pitched to [adult swim] before getting picked up by Nickelodeon. The fact that Adult Swim didn't even exist in 1999 alone makes the rumour dubious, and the 1997 "SpongeBoy Ahoy" pitch decidedly proves it wrong as said document features no age-inappropriate content and repeatedly stresses the appeal of SpongeBob and his world to the show's intended kid audience. The rumor is likely a result of SpongeBob's infamy for its Demographically Inappropriate Humor.

Nickelodeon Resignation Incident

File:Technical Difficulties.jpg
Technical Difficulties screen

Starting somewhere around April and May of 2023, there have been a number of videos on YouTube by a creepypasta fans known as "Nickelodeon Resignation Incident." During "The Ultimate SpongeBob SpongeBash" marathon, a former Nickelodeon employee named Armond Raphael Ramsey (or A.R.R.) made a series of hijackings during the marathon, including episodes such as The Paper, Help Wanted, and Valentine's Day. It started off with some minor glitches cutting from episode to episode before things got more disturbing including a still of SpongeBob with a evil looking expression, and a message from Ramsey expressing his frustration with Nickelodeon. During moments of the hijackings, a technical difficulty screen would appear reading:

Something has gone wrong and we are trying to fix it.

We will be back to normal as soon as we can.

Sorry!

Fan theories

Seven Deadly Sins Theory

File:7 deadly sins theory.png
Chart of the theory.

This theory states that the main characters may be based on the seven deadly sins:

  • SpongeBob is theorized as being the sin of lust, due to his character showing constant love for others, by some people, the sin of lust is believed to be Pearl.
  • Mr. Krabs is theorized as being the sin of greed, due to a main focus of his character being his love for money.
  • Squidward is theorized as being the sin of wrath, due to him showing heavy disdain for many things on the show.
  • Plankton is theorized as being the sin of envy, due to him going to the extreme for the Chum Bucket to be more successful than the Krusty Krab.
  • Sandy is theorized as being the sin of pride, due to her being very proud of who she is.
  • Patrick is theorized as being the sin of sloth, as he is shown to be very lazy and laid back on the show.
  • Gary is theorized as being the sin of gluttony, as a reference to SpongeBob often feeding him, by some people, the sin of gluttony is believed to be Mrs. Puff.

Nuclear Testing Theory

This popular internet fan theory states that the intelligent life of the sea creatures in Bikini Bottom is the result of nuclear radiation, as the Bikini Atoll that exists above it was used a nuclear testing site by the United States in real life. The radiation from the nukes is theorized to have caused the sea life below to mutate and evolve into Bikini Bottomites. Fans also noted Sandy's full protection suit, with them stating how it can be a radioactive hazmat suit, as well as stating how this theory is an explanation to the jokes relating to explosions on the show.

Although, there are contradictions to this theory, such as the undersea towns on the show that are located outside Bikini Bottom, although, some fans back this up by stating how Bikini Bottomites reproduced and immigrated to other parts of the ocean. A bigger contradiction is the prehistoric versions of Bikini Bottom seen in "SB-129," "Ugh," and "Hysterical History" that prove Bikini Bottom existed long before the nuclear testing did.

This theory, along with the Seven Deadly Sins Theory, has been debunked by SpongeBob's voice actor, Tom Kenny, in a 2015 interview with Huffpost.[34] He confirmed that the fictitious city is named after Bikini Atoll.

Krabby Patty Secret Formula Theories

Due to the Krabby Patty secret formula remaining a mystery throughout the show, it's no surprise that the formula has been subjected to many fan theories,[35] these theories include:

  • Crab Meat: Many people in the show's fanbase often picture the Krabby Patty secret formula to be crabs, making Mr. Krabs a cannibal. Despite this being such a common theory, there is little evidence to support it. People support this theory by stating that there are very few crabs in Bikini Bottom, and that in the episode "Mid-Life Crustacean," Mr. Krabs takes a bite out of a Krabby Patty and says, "So that's what I taste like"; however, said quote is taken out of context, as during that scene, he's eating a Krabby Patty that's being figuratively compared to him due to it being old and dried out like he is. This theory was debunked by Nickelodeon's Instagram account, stating "We can 100 percent confirm Krabby Patties are not made of crabs."[36]
  • Whale Meat: Another theory that has gained some popularity is that the Krabby Patties are made from whale meat. This theory is supported by how in real life, whale carcasses are a food source for various marine life, and can even be able to fuel an entire ecosystem, hence the reason why Krabby Patties are loved by many. This theory also ties into Pearl's mother, suggesting that Mr. Krabs could've come across her carcass and built the Krusty Krab around it.
  • Marketing Ploy: A theory thought up by Matthew Robert Patrick, also known as MatPat, who is known for his theories on video games, films, and other forms of fiction, suggests that the Krabby Patty secret formula isn't real and was just a marketing ploy set up by Mr. Krabs.[37] MatPat supports this by stating how the Krusty Krab is more focused on the money than its food, much like real life fast food restaurants, and uses the formula to make Krabby Patties appear better to the customers. This theory also suggests that SpongeBob is unaware that the formula isn't real, due to it being out of character for him to support lies and deception without feeling any guilt. He also brings up real life studies on how people's feelings towards a product are linked to psychology and how they feel about the product, and how creating a fake secret formula would cause profit.

Skin Theory

Skin Theory is the name of many instances of characters in the early seasons of SpongeBob SquarePants being seen wearing and removing suits and false body parts from their person, and how this action is seen as normal in Bikini Bottom. The theory was originally created by Doug Woolever on YouTube.

Sparta Remixes

File:This is Patrick- Sparta Remix (V2)
Example

Since 2007, Sparta Remixes are a series of mashup videos on YouTube with techno music, the word "Sparta" came from a clip of the film 300, which was a internet meme along with the former. The earliest known SpongeBob-related videos that would follow the fad is clips from "Big Pink Loser," "Something Smells," and "Artist Unknown."

SpongeBob (Speedy)

File:SpongeBob SquarePants Theme Song (Speedy)
Example

Many SpongeBob episodes posted on YouTube are often sped up, in order to avoid being taken down from Viacom (who own Nickelodeon, which airs and produces SpongeBob). It is one of the oldest SpongeBob-related phenomena on YouTube dating back to pre-copyright removal status which has been around since 2007. They can be specified as two types: Chipmunk and non-Chipmunk. Chipmunk is based from Alvin and the Chipmunks, as the characters' voices have been made higher-pitched. Non-Chipmunk involves the characters speaking with their regular voices (making them easier to understand), but the rest of the episode is sped up.

SpongeBob Backwards/Reverse

File:Spongebob Intro In Reverse
Example

This features episodes of SpongeBob played in reverse to express humor and at times, people notice hidden sentences in it. A similar phenomenon called "SpongeBob Theme Song in Reverse" plays the song backwards often with lyrics showing it has inappropriate lyrics in reverse (especially on "Drop on the deck and flop like a fish"). There is also a phenomenon in which SpongeBob and Patrick speak backwards from "Opposite Day" played in reverse to show what they are really saying.

Portrayed by SpongeBob

The Internet Portrayed by SpongeBob by Vailskibum.
File:Restaurants portrayed by SpongeBob
Example

Portrayed by SpongeBob (for videos, SpongeBob Comparison Charts are used for still images) is a popular meme/video category where people take clips/screencaps from SpongeBob episodes alongside a caption/picture in the corner of what the clip is portraying, which can be movies, TV shows, websites, businesses, video games, or pretty much anything. The image version started around 2016, with the video variant starting later.

Compilation of the SpongeBob doxxing your IP Address videos.

SpongeBob doxxing your IP Address is a series of YouTube videos which uses a fake IP address text over a random picture of SpongeBob and some stock music as well as music from the YouTube Audio Library.

SpongeDubs / SpongeBob Sings X

SpongeDubs is a YouTuber who takes clips of SpongeBob saying words, cuts and edits them, and sets them on tune with famous songs. The first known sponge dub that SpongeDubs made is SpongeBob singing Bruno Mars's song, "That's What I Like," in April 2017. Over a year later, he made & posted more dubs of SpongeBob singing songs. There are others who make / have made their own "SpongeBob sings" videos—also known as sponge dubs—that use / have used the same technique of audio & video editing as SpongeDubs's sponge dubs.

Numerous SpongeBob song covers have been made with Uberduck's SpongeBob SquarePants TalkNet model that possesses the function with which SpongeBob's voice can be made to speak and/or sing in the rhythm & pitch of what is spoken and/or sung in a reference audio that is used on the website.

Rock Motto (more commonly known as "SpingeBill Goes Into A Horrifying Dimension") is a YouTube Poop uploaded by ThatGuyPoops which became popular for being creepy at the same time as being funny. It has become a creepypasta, mainly due to Plankton's disturbing appearance in the video. It is likely parodying the episode "Rock Bottom," since the title card is using a messed up version of the original, and the video also contains clips from "Rock Bottom."[38]

An example of this crossover video.

Mr. Krabs cursing crossover was a remix and reaction videos of other SpongeBob and non-SpongeBob characters to Mr. Krabs saying all 13 bad words in season 2 episode "Sailor Mouth," It shows Mr. Krabs swearing after he hit his foot on a rock, and in his pain, he shouts all thirteen ecurse words. During that scene it shows shocked other characters from other series. It started on February 3, 2018 by a YouTuber named Malik Young.

An example of a pirated CD slapped with the character on the bottom right.

In the mid-2000s, throughout its popularity in Latin America (especially Mexico and Peru), pirated DVD productions such as Fat Records and Producciones Superman would release the first movie and episodes (Spanish versions from the official DVDs) in a single DVD disc with other media in a thin DVD box or sealed in plastic. In other cases, most pirated DVDs are often recorded from via phone, in one example during the theatrical run of The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water in Latin America, DVDs were sold through the markets in villages and also onto pirated Spanish websites in bad quality.

Pirated DVD productions would use the main character's name. Such as Producciones Bob Esponja uses the titular character on its intro and on everything from DVDs and album covers. Music videos and animations from video sharing websites are shoved as bonus features, an example of a music video titled "bob ella y yo" which uses clips from The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie with the song "Ella y Yo" from the band Aventura.[39] Various video edits of "Sweet Victory" from "Band Geeks"[40] and the "Camp Fire Song Song" from "The Camping Episode"[41] dubbed with a Latin Spanish track.

Review of the movie SpongeBob in Tehran by 'A.S.K. Air'.

SpongeBob in Tehran is an unauthorized film released around 2017 made by the same company that made the illegal Persian dub which resurfaced in 2019. The movie involves SpongeBob, Patrick, and Squidward all heading to Tehran to obtain a secret sauce recipe for Mr. Krabs. The poster uses stock art from the cover of Plankton's Robotic Revenge, and some of the backgrounds from the show and the first two movies were used.

There are sequels unrelated to the first film produced by the same company:

  • SpongeBob in Iran 2: Foreign Buddies (also known as SpongeBob's Alien Friends), which simply uses the characters' regular designs.
  • SpongeBob in Chabahar, which is in live-action and uses mascot costumes.
  • Bobby and Bobo in Iran: Save the Sibyl Gold, which features similar-looking but altered character designs (possibly to avoid trademark infringement).
  • SpongeBob in Iran: Covid 19 Special, a special that uses flash animation.

Talking Patrick Star/Talking Hillarious[sic] Star

File:IconTalkPatricl.webp
Original logo

Talking Patrick Star was a former Talking app similar to other Talking apps such as Talking Tom, but with the main character being Patrick Star and many of the game's backgrounds deriving from SpongeBob SquarePants. The first version would be deleted in 2014 due of copyright issues by Viacom before then returning to the iOS store in 2015 as "Talking Hillarious[sic] Star," swapping to the Unity engine and changing development team before being taken down again in 2016 and failing to come back.

Websites

AI-generated audio deepfakes

Users can generate text-to-speech voice synthesis audio clips and song covers of famous celebrities and fictional characters, such as the characters of SpongeBob SquarePants. 15.ai, FakeYou, and Uberduck were among the earliest websites used, peaking in popularity from 2020 to 2023. Most are free to use, with later websites producing more accurate content than earlier ones.

The YouTuber Negan Jeffrey posted SpongeBob song cover videos on YouTube with Uberduck's SpongeBob SquarePants (regular) TalkNet model, all of which have been privated as of November 2024. YouTuber TheFactory posted SpongeBob song cover videos on YouTube made with Uberduck, some of which have gone viral, with his most popular one being SpongeBob and Patrick rap "Family Ties" (amazing brother). Furthermore, the rap artist YourBoySponge uses Uberduck's SpongeBob SquarePants (regular) TalkNet model to make SpongeBob rap original rap songs written and composed by the artist himself.

As of June 21, 2022, the most popular SpongeBob song cover video on YouTube that has been made with Uberduck's SpongeBob SquarePants (regular) TalkNet model is SpongeBob sings Super Idol EXTENDED VERSION, which has received more than 4,000,000 views, 6,800+ comments, and over 122,000 likes.

Besides SpongeBob song covers, many memes, parodies, and other edits have been made with uberduck's SpongeBob Tacotron 2 models, some of which have gone viral, having received millions of views on YouTube. Significant examples of which are SpongeBob Meets his Past Self and Hey Patrick, Spell Kid Among Us Backwards.

Models that change the vocals of singers in audio (known as AI covers) are also popular, while retaining the singer's accent. One notable example with 1.5 million views as of November 2024 is an AI cover of Squidward singing "My Way" over Frank Sinatra's vocals. While less popular, voice models that can clone input audio to text-to-speech (examples being ElevenLabs and Character AI) are known to exist.

A majority of the videos that have been made with Uberduck's SpongeBob voice models do not properly state or let viewers know the sources of the AI-synthetic SpongeBob speech featured in them, consequently misleading many people to assume and falsely believe that the AI-synthetic SpongeBob speech is from 15.ai or fakeyou.com — This misattribution and absence of proper credit has resulted in 15.ai's terms of service having a rule that forbids having 15.ai and non-15.ai-generated speech in the same videos and projects. Consequently, many AI services such as 15.ai, Uberduck, ElevenLabs, and Kits AI have either gone out of business or limited their services to free users.

Spongebob Patrick

File:The Athletic
"The Athletic," an example of a Spongebob Patrick video.

Spongebob Patrick is a series of accounts which uploads videos of people singing names of SpongeBob SquarePants characters, locations, and episodes to the melody of different songs (For example, "The Anthem" is based on the USA national anthem and "The Athletic" is based on a song from the video game Super Mario Bros. 3). These videos often feature deliberately poor video and audio quality. The accounts became particularly popular after posting "The Legend," an edit of the intro cutscene to the video game Deltarune, complete with text edits and unusually high-quality custom graphics in addition to the typical singing.
