Synopsis

Patrick gets a cake.

One morning, the mailman arrives and gives all the campers their mail. However, he does not have any for Patrick, who is saddened. To make it up for him, the mailman gives him an unmarked box that contains a cake. The campers notice and want some of the cake, and begin chasing after Patrick. He retreats into the forest, but falls off a cliff. When Patrick comes to, the cake is covered in forest debris, making it appear to have a face. Patrick hallucinates that it can talk and names it Cakey.

Cakey suggest that Patrick eat him for dessert. To have lunch, Patrick buys a bag of dirt from a nearby vending machine and eats it. Suddenly, he is interrupted by SpongeBob, Sandy, Bubble Bass, and Kevin, who are searching for Patrick and the cake. SpongeBob and Bubble Bass find frosting on a rock and use it to detect where they went.

The cake is inedible after being taken through the forest.

Patrick falls off another cliff, and Cakey suggests that he use offense to prevent the cake from being stolen. That night, the four campers huddle around a campfire, as a now-savage Patrick sneaks behind them. He sets up booby traps for them, but falls into them himself. This ends with Patrick falling into a hole and getting crushed by boulders. While Sandy and SpongeBob try to talk to him, Kevin finds the cake. However, it is dirty and inedible. They return the cake to Patrick, who hesitantly returns to camp.

Cakey tells Patrick that he wants to be eaten and enjoyed by many, rather than kept to Patrick. At Cakey's request, Patrick "shares" Cakey, throwing inedible globs of cake and frosting at everyone around camp. Suddenly, the mailman shows up and admits that he made a mistake, and delivers Patrick his true package. It contains a talking blueberry pie that Patrick names Mrs. Pie, and he meets it in a similar way to Cakey.

Production notes

Brandon Warren:

  • "Kurt Snyder storyboarded [the sequence of Patrick running through the forest with Cakey] from [the] script and gave us some of my favorite Patrick drawings (especially on the first fall towards camera and the slumpy way Pat hits the rocks) and then during the plussing process, Eric Lechtenberg took Kurt's ideas and pushed them to the cartooniest levels we could. This sequence feels like a classic Looney Tunes short and I couldn't be happier. I love my job because I get to work with such talented and funny people!"[6]
  • "[The sequence of Patrick smushing his face against the window] was plussed by the very talented Yeardley Wells, who had us all laughing in our story meetings with this bit." [Warren believed that] "the insanely skilled CG team achieved the silliness we were going for."[8]
  • "[The sequence of Patrick disposing of Cakey] was boarded by the very talented Mike Geiger and he nailed the unintentional harm I was looking for. Pat has the best intentions but totally DESTROYS those other kids! Incredible work from the entire Kamp team!"[3]

Trivia

General

  • Patrick's screams from "Patrick's Tantrum" can be heard when Patrick runs with the cake.
  • "My Friend Patty" is similar to this episode, as it features a main character trying to protect its sentient food friend who only wants to be eaten.
  • The sequence of Patrick throwing pieces of Cakey to the campers is a callback to the series' theme song.
  • One of the settings on Larry's adjustable barbells mentions The Salty Spitoon.

Cultural references

  • When Patrick says "I've come here to kick butt and save cake, and I'm all out of cake," it is a reference to a similar line from the science fiction horror film They Live. This line would also be referenced in "Deep Sea Despot," which premiered on the same day.
  • The traps Patrick sets up to capture anyone from stealing Cakey were meant to be reminiscent of Kevin McCallister's traps for burglars Marv and Harry in the 1990 film Home Alone.[9]
