Gameplay

A Mission Through Time is a real-time RPG. The plays as SpongeBob, can move with the arrow keys, and interact with items by pressing the space bar. Various items can be collected and traded to NPCs to progress through the game. There is also a combat system, where SpongeBob can buy weapons from Clamu's shop and use them against enemies. SpongeBob has three hit points and can restore health by collecting hearts.

The game starts at Shady Shoals Rest Home. Man Ray and Plankton have teamed up to steal the Krabby Patty recipe. SpongeBob and Patrick want to go back in time to find the younger versions of Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy to help out, but he ends up being sent to the far future after he uses the time machine. After battling his way through the Man Ray timeline, he ends up in the prehistoric era, and then the present day.

Character names and text are listed as they appear in the game. A few names were unofficial before the game made them official, having been taken from a fan-made source for Incidental 81, from a character whom Incidental 93 addresses the Flying Dutchman as in "Ghost Host" for Incidental 85, and from two other characters for Incidental 90, and are used here for accuracy. A character's profile is unlocked after SpongeBob interacts with them for the first time.
