Synopsis
One day, Squidward is dressed in island clothes and playing the piano on an island. He hits one of the notes, but it makes a bell sound, which is coming from SpongeBob hitting a bell, which in reality is his alarm clock going off revealing that it was a bad dream. Later in the morning, Squidward is still thinking about the dream about SpongeBob he had while arriving at the Krusty Krab, where it is Employee Brotherhood Day, a day on which all employees must exchange gifts that they made themselves. For his gift to Squidward, SpongeBob presents him with a sweater made out of his own eyelashes. When Squidward scoffs at this heartfelt gift, SpongeBob begins to cry copiously, eventually handing Squidward a sweater made from his own tears.

Squidward, wishing he could simply buy a gift instead of spending time on making one, finds a group of pirates outside with a sack of pies. The pirates claim that these were bombs and Squidward laments on being unable to purchase one, causing the pirates to lie and withdraw their claim, giving Squidward an indeterminate flavor for $25. Squidward presents his supposedly homemade pie to Mr. Krabs, who decides to give it a taste test. He breaks a tiny bit off the crust and goes to get milk. Tripping on his way, the crumb of pie explodes on contact and wrecks the back of the Krusty Krab, blasting Squidward and Mr. Krabs away. While Mr. Krabs believes it to be a deliberate attempt on his life, Squidward confesses that he bought the pie, ignorant of its contents. Back in Mr. Krabs' office, SpongeBob discovers the "pie" that Squidward bought for him, not noticing the large hole.

After Squidward explains how he got the bomb to Mr. Krabs, they realize that the bomb is still in the Krusty Krab. When they rush back to the Krusty Krab, SpongeBob has apparently eaten the entire pie. Mr. Krabs is disgusted at Squidward for his act and asks how he will live with himself for "killing" SpongeBob after all of the nice things the sponge did for him. Squidward then imagines SpongeBob serving food to a customer, only to then suddenly explode into many small cubes from eating the explosive pie. Horrified, Squidward suggests they get him to the hospital to remove it, but Mr. Krabs states that it will not do any good. Having seen this situation play out eleven times prior, he tells Squidward that the pie will explode upon reaching SpongeBob's lower intestine. Squidward still tries to call the hospital, but the doctor reveals to have seen this situation eleven times before as well and cannot save him. A guilt-ridden Squidward laments on SpongeBob's fate and asks how he will tell him. Mr. Krabs insists that Squidward does not tell him, as it will only make him feel worse. He then predicts to Squidward that SpongeBob has only until sunset to live before the bomb hits his lower intestine and says that he should enjoy his final hours. Truly remorseful, Squidward decides to come up with a plan to make SpongeBob's remaining hours the most fun he has ever had, and so he asks him what he would most like to do. SpongeBob presents an extensive list of exactly that. He calls it his "friendship list." A montage of Squidward and SpongeBob playing together is shown, revealing that Squidward has forgotten about Mr. Krabs' warning, SpongeBob's gifts to him, Employee Brotherhood Day, and his dream about SpongeBob.

The final activity SpongeBob planned is watching the sunset with Squidward. Remembering Mr. Krabs' warning about SpongeBob's death, Squidward nervously agrees to participate. He then builds a brick wall between them so he won't see the explosion during the sunset. SpongeBob then mentions that if he were to die, "in some sort of fiery explosion due to the carelessness of a friend," this sunset would be exactly what he would want to see. Squidward begins to tear up at this while SpongeBob lets out a small burp, saying something of indeterminate flavor just hit his lower intestine. With the sun nearly past the horizon, SpongeBob begins a five-second countdown, letting Squidward finish the count. At the end of the first count, with the sun still visible, SpongeBob chuckles that they may have started too early. Squidward, increasingly nervous, begins counting down once more. When he hits "three," the sun finally sets, and an explosion rocks the wall. Squidward breaks down into tears, thankful he was at least able to make SpongeBob's last few hours meaningful.

Another explosion occurs, which knocks the wall down, crushing Squidward. He pulls himself out from underneath and, to his bewilderment, finds SpongeBob alive as well and blowing bubble bombs. Enraged, Squidward angrily yells at SpongeBob, saying that he spent the whole day with him doing ridiculous things because he was supposed to explode. SpongeBob thought at first that Squidward wants him to "explode" in anger, which wasn't the case. Squidward explains that he was supposed to explode into a million pieces because he ate the pie he left on the counter at The Krusty Krab that he bought from pirates for $25, not knowing that it was a bomb. SpongeBob finally knows what Squidward was talking about, because he reveals that he was saving the pie in his back pocket for them to share. This shocks Squidward, because now that he knows what SpongeBob actually did with the pie, not only does he realize that he did everything with his neighbor all day for nothing, but he also got Mr. Krabs back at Bikini Bottom worried for nothing, as well. SpongeBob then walks over to share the pie with Squidward, but trips on a rock, causing the pie bomb to splat into Squidward, which destroys the entirety of Bikini Bottom in a nuclear explosion. Squidward miraculously survives, uttering "ouch" in pain.

Plot
At the Krusty Krab, it's 'Employee Brotherhood day'. Squidward doesn't know this. On 'Employee Brotherhood day', all employees must exchange gifts (they have to make the gifts themselves), and SpongeBob gives Squidward a sweater made out of his eyelashes. When Squidward scoffs at his heartfelt gift, SpongeBob begins to cry copiously, eventually handing Squidward a sweater made from his tears.

Squidward wishes he could buy a gift instead of make one, and sees a group of pirates outside with a sack of pies. He goes outside and his crew says that they're bombs, but after Squidward offers to buy one, the pirate says they were kidding, and Squidward buys a pie for $25. He lies to Mr. Krabs, saying that he made it. Mr. Krabs inspects it, and says he has to eat a bit to see it wasn't horrible. He breaks a tiny bit off the crust and says "This would go great with some milk!" As he gets the milk, he trips over and the bit of the pie explodes and wrecks the back of the Krusty Krab. Squidward and Mr. Krabs are blown far away. When they arrive at the Krusty Krab, SpongeBob acts as if he ate the pie, even though he actually ate a different one. Mr. Krabs tells Squidward that the pie would explode when it reached SpongeBob's lower intestine (which is around sunset), so Squidward decides to make SpongeBob's remaining hours fun. After being asked what the funnest things he could do are, SpongeBob presents a list of the funnest things he could do.

Upon hearing this, Squidward remembers that SpongeBob will explode at sunset. So he builds a brick wall between them. At sunset, there is an explosion, but it's actually a bubble that SpongeBob blew (It's in the shape of a bomb and explodes). There is another explosion which knocks the wall down, crushing Squidward. Squidward comes out and finds that SpongeBob is still alive. He says he's supposed to explode.  SpongeBob tries very hard and finally yells, "GARY! YOU ARE GOING TO FINISH YOUR DESSERT, AND YOU ARE GONNA LIKE IT!!" Squidward tells him that he means SpongeBob is supposed to blow up into a million pieces, and Squidward tells him about the pie. SpongeBob doesn't seem to remember, then says 'Oh, this pie!" He takes the explosive pie out of his pocket and says that he was saving it for them to share. He trips over, and the pie/bomb hits Squidward in the face and goes off, demolishing all of Bikini Bottom. The (extremely huge) explosion, here portrayed by actual live action footage of the nuclear test Operation Crossroads, can be seen above the sea. Squidward gets the full force of the explosion, and manages to utter out, "Ow."

Cultural References
Reception
* The Operation Crossroads nuclear test, footage of which is used to represent the explosion near the end of the episode, was conducted at Bikini Atoll.  SpongeBob SquarePants is set in the fictional city of Bikini Bottom, which is named after this atoll (possibly indirectly, via the bikini swimsuit).
*
*Between Operation Crossroads in 1946, and 1958, Bikini Atoll was the testing ground of more than twenty hydrogen bomb/atomic bomb tests, meaning that Bikini Bottom must have been vapourized or burned down several times in those twelve years. A possible reference to this is made by Mr Krabs who says, "I've seen this before. Eleven times as a matter of fact." Mr. Krabs was in the Navy,(revealed in Shell of a Man, possibly an underwater version of a ground force division) so he should have experienced these events.
*In the "100 Greatest Nicktoon Episodes," one scene of the episode was the 2nd greatest moment.
*Camp Lazlo has a similar episode called The Big Cheese. Scoutmaster Lumpus eats a deadly cheese and he is going to die in 13 minutes. At the end, just like the episode, Lumpus doesn't die. Here are the reasons and the unfortunate events: In Camp Lazlo, the cheese is made in China and Lumpus goes to jail. In SpongeBob SquarePants, SpongeBob kept the pie in his pocket and he trips causing a big explosion.

Trivia/Goofs
Trivia
*In the scene where the hole created by the bomb going off is seen, we see some of the metal wall curls inwards, whereas it should curl outwards, because of the direction of the blast energy.

The explosive pie.

File:Dying for Pie 199.png
Explosion over Bikini Bottom.

    • In the same scene, SpongeBob's tongue is heart-shaped.
  • Mr. Krabs mentions he had seen bomb dealing "11 times" before. The bomb was purchased from pirates, and it is implied that Mr. Krabs witnessed 11 comrades in the navy die from pirate attacks during his time in the war.
  • The scene where Squidward tries to wear the sweater that SpongeBob made later became a Rockin' Nicktoon Moment.[3]
  • SpongeBob breaks the fourth wall when talking to Mr. Krabs through Squidward's thought bubble and says, "Hey, it's Mr. Krabs! Hi, Mr. Krabs!"
  • The live-action footage is from an old film showing the famous Baker explosion from Operation Crossroads, which was the first post-WW2 nuclear weapons test, and one of many that took place in Bikini Atoll.
