He is also a main cast member for the SpongeBob SquarePants franchise, voicing Sheldon J. Plankton and various recurring characters, including Larry the Lobster, Fred, and Potty the Parrot (since season 10).

Biography

Doug debuted as a writer on the episode "Tea at the Treedome."

Doug Lawrence summarized Plankton's origins in 2015, saying that he "was only supposed to be in one or two episodes, but I was a writer on the show and I really liked this character."[1] Following his first voice recording as Plankton, Lawrence wrote some of his own ideas for the character and passed them to Stephen Hillenburg.[1] From then on, Plankton began to appear more often.

Doug Lawrence decided that Plankton and Karen should be an inseparable duo, with Karen as the brains of the operation, always supplying Plankton with evil plans. Lawrence said: "I want more Karen on the show ... The married life of an evil genius is the funniest thing to me, so in that regard [Karen] definitely enhances Plankton's stories making him more than just your typical bad guy."[2]

Doug Lawrence was promoted to the show's main voice cast in the credits of the 2004 movie alongside Jill Talley, who voices Karen. In season 10, he was promoted to story editor after Kyle McCulloch left the show. Also during season 10, Lawrence took over the voice role of Potty the Parrot following Paul Tibbitt's departure.

Outside of SpongeBob, he was a writer, director, and the voice of Filburt Turtle on Rocko's Modern Life, where he also worked with Tom Kenny who voiced Heffer Wolfe, and also as a writer, director, and the voices of Edward, Dave and Ping Pong, and Nurse Leslie on Camp Lazlo.
