This 4-disc set features SpongeBob's entire modeling career, Squidward's whole public television career, and Mrs. Puff's complete Krusty Krab career. Plus, you'll get a hilarious whodunit, a song you won't easily forget, a slimy love story, the entire multi-chapter special "Legends of Bikini Bottom", and oceans more!
Currently retired critic Josh Rode of the DVD Verdict was unfavorable on the episodes featured, regarding the whole season as "by far the least consistently funny season of the venerable cartoon." "The sad fact is the show's greatest strength is also its greatest weakness. [...] The episode plots can't help but be somewhat repetitive. Most of Season Seven's best moments involve the nearly evil genius Plankton [...] Mr. Krabs' snail-napping for the sake of loose change is also funny, and the Mermaidman and Barnacleboy episodes—while not as fresh as they once were—are still better than average. [...] The titular sponge and his best friend Patrick have become the least engaging parts of the show, which is a problem since they dominate screen time. Patrick has been dumbed down too far [...] As for SpongeBob, he acts like a happy, fun-loving, not-overly-intelligent sponge, but has entirely lost the naïveté which has long been the basis of his charm." He was also critical of the "invariably poorly written and arranged" songs, and praised the shorts featured for being "far funnier than the actual episodes they're advertising." His verdict was "not guilty," due to the episodes' appeal to younger audiences.[1]
Trivia
This was the first season to be released on DVD completely in Region 1 since The Complete 3rd Season in 2005.
This is the first season set to be packaged in one standard DVD case instead of a box set with multiple cases. Previous seasons would later be re-released in this format.
This is also the first season set to have plain gray discs instead of discs with artwork on them. All season sets both new and re-released would use this format except The Next 100 Episodes and The Best 200 Episodes Ever.
The 4 discs were copy/pasted to make discs 5-8 of The Next 100 episodes.
This DVD also introduced the format of having a large number indicating the season number in the middle of the cover artwork. All season sets now use this format, including re-releases.
This DVD is currently the only Region 1 season set to not have "The" before the rest of the title.
This DVD does not list the episodes by disc on the back.
On the alternate covers (besides the Japanese release), SpongeBob is the only main character on the cover and the other characters are made out of bubbles.
Puffy Fluffy is the only major episodic character from season 7 who is not on the cover.
On the episode listing, "Sponge-Cano!" is listed without an exclamation mark at the end of the title.
In the episode "One Coarse Meal," when SpongeBob and Pearl both say "Huh?," the closed-captioning refers to it as "(confused babbling)."
The DVD description for "The Curse of Bikini Bottom" says that SpongeBob and Patrick disturbed the Flying Dutchman's sleep, but they actually shaved off his beard and that is why he cursed them in the episode.
