A complete list of renamed episodes in SpongeBob SquarePants. Throughout the series, there have been some instances of episode titles getting renamed before release because either the creators did not like the original title or the original title was deemed inappropriate.

Note: Episodes with alternate names on the TV guide listings also count. For an episode list with the official episode titles, see List of episodes.

SpongeBob SquarePants

Season 1

  • "Help Wanted" - According to a piece of concept art, the title was originally "Sponge Overboard"[1] and "Pilot."[2]
  • "Reef Blower" - According to concept art, the title was originally "Pilot Extension," referencing the fact that this fills in the rest of the 11 minute runtime that this and "Help Wanted" are combined.[3]
  • "Tea at the Treedome" - According to a production painting, this episode was originally titled "Tea at the Tree Dome," with the words "Tree" and "Dome" being two different words before being combined into one.[4]
  • "Bubblestand" - According to Stephen Hillenburg's pitch bible, this episode was originally titled "Bubbles."[5] In the Croatian dub, this episode's title is "Mjehurići," which when translated to English, still uses the original title.
  • "Jellyfishing" - According to Stephen Hillenburg's pitch bible, the title was supposed to be "Jelly Fishing."[6]
  • "Plankton!" - According to the audio commentary, this episode was originally going to be titled "Deep Cover."[7]
  • "Naughty Nautical Neighbors" - This episode was originally titled "Friendly Fire," as seen in some production art.[8]
  • "Home Sweet Pineapple" - This episode was originally titled "Home." and/or "Home Sweet Home" [9]
  • "Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy" - This episode was originally titled "The Return of Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy."[10]
  • "Jellyfish Jam" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Jellyfish Jamboree."[11]
  • "Employee of the Month" - Sometimes, YTV accidentally lists this episode as "Chumbucket" instead of its actual name. The Chum Bucket is not even seen or mentioned in this episode.
    • YTV also sometimes incorrectly says this episode originally aired on March 14, 2014.
    • Additionally, "Chumbucket" is one word when it should be two.
  • "Scaredy Pants" - This episode was originally titled "SpongeBob's Halloween."[citation needed]
  • "I Was a Teenage Gary" - This episode was originally titled "Critical Condition."[17][18]
  • "Hooky" - According to Apple TV UK, this episode's working title was "Hooks."[37]
    • However, this could also be a simple typo.
  • "Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy II" - This episode was originally titled "Twenty-five Words or Less"[38] or "25 Words or Less."[39]


Season 2

  • "Your Shoe's Untied" - This episode was originally titled "Your Shoe Is Untied."[40]
  • "Bossy Boots" - This episode was originally titled "Working Pearl."[41] The iTunes US store release still keeps this title.
  • "Big Pink Loser" - This episode was originally titled "Single Pink Starfish."[42]
  • "Bubble Buddy" - This episode was originally titled as "SpongeBob's Bubble Pal" according to old newspaper listings.[43]
  • "Dying for Pie" - This episode was originally called "Biscuits."[44]
  • "Imitation Krabs" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Two Krabs Are Better Than One," according to some production art.[45] The reason why it was changed is unknown, but it was most likely because of the title being too long. It was also going to be called "Robot Krabs"[46]
  • "Wormy" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Shoo Fly."[47]
  • "Patty Hype" - This episode was originally titled "Color Patties" and "Color Patty's."
  • "Prehibernation Week" - This episode was originally called "Sardines."
  • "Life of Crime" - This episode was intially called "Partners in Crime."[48]
  • "Christmas Who?" - This episode was originally titled "Patchy The Pirate Presents: The SpongeBob SquarePants Christmas Special."[49] This alternate title is used by various cable TV providers and the Nickelodeon website.[50] Amazon Prime Video shortens this title to "The SpongeBob Christmas Special."[51]
  • "Survival of the Idiots" - According to the audio commentary, the original title was going to be "Survival of the Morons."[52]
  • "I'm Your Biggest Fanatic" - This episode was originally titled "Fanatics."[53]
  • "Shanghaied" - This episode was originally going to be called "SpongeBob's You Wish Spectacular Special" with "You Wish" appearing within the original Patchy segments. The Season 2 DVD box set still keeps this title, and on Sky this episode is called "You Wish (aka Shanghaied)."
  • "Welcome to the Chum Bucket" - This episode was originally titled "The Big Game."[54]
  • "Band Geeks" - This episode was originally titled "Squid In Charge."[55]
  • "Krusty Love" - This episode was originally titled "I Got You, Krabs” and/or "I Got Yo Krabs."[56]
  • "Sailor Mouth" - This episode was originally titled "Barnacles."[57]
  • "Jellyfish Hunter" - This episode was originally titled "Jellyfish Stalker."[58]
    • This episode was also initially listed as "Jellyfish Hunters" on Zap2it.
  • "The Fry Cook Games" -This episode was originally titled "The Dueling Mascots."[59]
  • "Sandy, SpongeBob, and the Worm" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Sandy SpongeBob, And The Worm."[60]

Season 3

  • "Party Pooper Pants" - This episode was advertised as "SpongeBob SquarePants House Party," even having a special logo as it's also seen on the DVD.
    • The logo is seen 4 times through the episode.
    • The Dutch dub uses this exact (English) name.
  • "Chocolate with Nuts" - The original name of this episode was "Door to Door"[73] and "The Chocolate Skirmish" from old newspaper listings.[74]
  • "Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy V" - This episode's working title is "Superfriends," as seen in production art, TV listings, and certain DVD releases.
  • "Clams" - The original name of this episode was "SpongeJaws,"[75][76][77] a pun of the Jaws movie series.
  • "Ugh" - This special episode is also listed as "SpongeBob B.C. (Before Comedy)."
  • "Born Again Krabs" - The original name of this episode was "A Penny Saved."[78]
  • "I Had an Accident" - This episode was originally titled "Safety Freak"[79] or "Safety Freak SpongeBob." Some television guides, such as Dish Network, use this title. It is known on Charter and Foxtel as simply "Safety Freak."[citation needed] The Comcast description of the episode calls the episode "Safety Freak (I Had an Accident)." It is unknown why Comcast would put "I Had an Accident" in parentheses in the title.
    • On old YTV airings of this episode, it was originally listed as its actual title, but, for unknown reasons, the YTV listings changed the title back to "Safety Freak" in 2013.
    • AT&T U-Verse used to list the original title, but like the YTV example, it was changed to "Safety Freak" in 2019.
  • "Krabby Land" - This episode's working title was "Krabbyland." This is also seen in the Sponge for Hire DVD-credits and the SpongeBob Comics #52. comic book.
  • "The Camping Episode" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Squid Gets Mauled."[80][81][82][83]
    • This was likely because the sea bear's attack on Squidward was not as relevant enough to the plot (as it only happened near the end) as SpongeBob and Patrick camping on their front lawn.
    • This could also be because the latter title was not family-friendly, since it is violent in nature.
    • This also could've been just a placeholder name, and was never meant to be the final name of the episode.
  • "Missing Identity" - This episode was originally titled "Missing Party."
  • "Plankton's Army" - This episode was originally called "Plankton's Last Stand."[84][85][86]


Season 4

  • "Bummer Vacation" - This episode's alternate titles were "Bummer Summer," "Bummer Summer Vacation," "Homework,"[95] and "Obligation Vacation."[48]
  • "Wigstruck" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Wig Stuck."
  • "That's No Lady" - This episode was originally going to be called "Witness Protection" and "Some Like It Patrick."[96]
  • "Driven to Tears" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Driving Mr. SquarePants."[48]
  • "Rule of Dumb" - This episode's alternate titles were "Starfish of Royalty," "Royal Pain," and "King Patrick."[48]
  • "Born to Be Wild" - This episode was originally going to be called "The Wild Ones."[97]
  • "Best Frenemies" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Krabs & Plankton Team Up."[48]
  • "The Pink Purloiner" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Suspicion" and "To Catch a Starfish."
  • "Squid Wood" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Mini Squid."[48] and "Squidwood," according to the unused title card.
    • The former name is used in some other countries when translated to English.

Season 5

  • "BlackJack" - This episode's alternate titles were "SpongeBob's Cousin," "In Search of Ma and Pa Sponge,"[104] and "In Search of Mom and Dad Sponge." The second unused title even had a title card made for it before they decided to change it to the finalized title of "BlackJack."
  • "Blackened Sponge" - This episode was originally going to be titled "The Black Sponge."
  • "Mermaid Man vs. SpongeBob" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Mermaidman and Barnacleboy VII: The Heist."[105]
  • "The Inmates of Summer" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Camp Incarceration."[106]
  • "To Save a Squirrel" - An early script outline lists this episode under various alternate titles: "Survival of the Misfittest," "Spongenapped!," "The Most Dangerous Hobby," "Captured Kidnapped Lost Castaways," and "Welcome to the Errordome."[107]
  • "Pest of the West" - This episode's alternate titles were "The Pest of the West," "The Good, The Bad, and The Spongey," and "Eternal Fry Cook."[108]
  • "Stanley S. SquarePants" - This episode was going to be titled "SpongeBob's Klutzy Cousin."


Season 6

  • "Krabby Road" - This episode was initially called "Krabby Tunes."[48]
  • "Penny Foolish" - On the original Nickelodeon USA schedule, this episode was originally going to be titled "Penny Fraud."[109]
  • "Suction Cup Symphony" - This episode was originally titled "Underwater Boogaloo."[110]
  • "A Life in a Day" - This episode was initially called "The Life in a Day."[111]
  • "No Nose Knows" - This episode was originally titled "Patrick Picks a Nose."[112]
  • "Patty Caper" - This episode was initially called "The Patty Caper."[113]
  • "SpongeBob SquarePants vs. The Big One" - This episode's alternate titles were "Endless Summer,"[114] "The Secret of Kahuna Laguna,"[115] and "SpongeBob SquarePants and the Big Wave." Two of these alternate titles are used in several international countries, including Poland, Serbia, all of Central and Eastern Europe, the UK, Taiwan, Latvia, Ukraine, Australia, and Germany.
    • The Dutch dub uses the name "The Secret of Kahuna Laguna," but still uses the "SpongeBob SquarePants vs. The Big One" title card background.
  • "Truth or Square" - The original title of this episode was "Stuck in the Freezer," "The Great Escape!," and "10th Anniversary."[123] There is a "Stuck in the Freezer" title card that can be seen in many countries, including Latin America, Spain, and Brazil. The book still uses "The Great Escape" title.
    • The Dutch dub still uses the former name, but with the "Truth or Square" title card background (on DVD it has the Stuck in the Freezer title card background). Also, "Stuck in the Freezer" is pronounced as "Stuck in the F-F-Freezer." ("Vast in de f-f-vriezer.")
  • "The Clash of Triton" - This episode was originally titled "Neptune's Party," and a title card for "Neptune's Party" was even made before they decided to change it to "The Clash of Triton." The title card can still be seen in Lithuania, Asia, Germany, France, Poland, Scandinavia, Israel, and all of Central and Eastern Europe.
    • In Latin America, the episode is sometimes transmitted with that title, although the original is also used.
    • In the Dutch dub, the episode still uses the original title, but not on the original title card background.


Season 7

  • "Tentacle-Vision" - According to production art and the Nickelodeon USA schedule, this episode was originally going to be titled "Squid TV."[48]
  • "I ♥ Dancing" - This episode was originally going to be titled "I Heart a Parade."
  • "Growth Spout" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Growth Spurt."
  • "The Inside Job" - This episode was originally going to be called "Inside Job."[124]
  • "Model Sponge" - The episode's alternate title is "SpongeModel," and was initially called "Sponge Model."[125]
  • "Keep Bikini Bottom Beautiful" - The episode's original title is "The Squid Who Cleaned Up Bikini Bottom."
  • "Yours, Mine and Mine" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Sharing."

  • "One Coarse Meal" - This episode was originally titled "Plankton Got Served," and a title card for "Plankton Got Served" was even made before they decided to change it to "One Coarse Meal."[127]
  • "Gramma's Secret Recipe" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Grandma Plankton."[128]
  • "Welcome to the Bikini Bottom Triangle" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Welcome to the Bermuda Triangle," as seen on some of the original character models sheets on Facebook.[129]
  • "The Curse of the Hex" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Hagfish Hex," as seen on some of the original character storyboards on Facebook.[129]
  • "The Great Patty Caper" - The original name for this episode was "Krabby Patty No More."[130] On YoutubeTV, this episode is referred to as “Mystery with a Twistery.”
  • "The Cent of Money" - This episode was originally going to be titled "The Smell of Money."[48]
  • "That Sinking Feeling" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Digging It."[48]
  • "Buried in Time" - This episode was originally called "Time Capsule Spectacular."

  • "SpongeBob You're Fired" - This episode was originally called "SpongeBob, You're Fired!," utilizing proper grammar unlike the current title.[140]
  • The TV Guide on Xfinity/Comcast displays the title as this.[citation needed]
  • "Lost in Bikini Bottom" - This episode was originally titled "The Shortcut."[141] In the French dub, this episode's title is "Le Raccourci," and in the German dub, this episode's title is "Die Abkürzung." When both of these titles are translated to English, they still use the original title.
  • "Company Picnic" - This episode was originally called "Dueling Picnics."[142]
  • "Pull Up a Barrel" - This episode was originally going to be titled ""Navy Days" or "Krab & Bull Story."
  • "Sanctuary!" - This episode was originally called "One Snail Sponge."[143]
  • "Sold!" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Nick Fishkins: I'll Buy Your Home." Some UK TV listings use this original title.[144]

The episode was also originally called "Goodbye Krusty Krab."[citation needed] This title change was for marketing purposes.[citation needed] The episode is available on the UK streaming service Now TV under its original title, "Factory Fresh."
  • "Salsa Imbecilicus" - This episode was originally going to be called "Idiot Sauce," but the title was changed because it was deemed that it sounded "too mean."[citation needed]
  • "The Whole Tooth" - This episode was originally titled "The Tooth, The Whole Tooth, and Nothing but the Tooth."[citation needed] However, the Russian dub still uses this title.

  • "There Will Be Grease" - This episode was originally called "There Will be Grease!" as seen in the script, with a lowercase b. The title was then changed to "There Will Be Grease!," with the only two differences being that the lowercase b was changed to a capital B and the exclamation mark was removed from the finalized title.

  • "The Big Bad Bubble Bass" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Big Bad Bubble Bass,"[159][160][161][162][163] but later on, the word "The" was added to the title.
  • "Food PBFFT! Truck" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Food PBBFT! Truck." The only difference is that the finalized title replaces the second "B" with an "F."
  • "Upturn Girls" - This episode was originally titled "City Cetaceans."[164]
  • "Say Awww!" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Say 'Awww!'" The only difference in the finalized title is the two apostrophes surrounding the "Awww" were removed.
  • "Captain Pipsqueak" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Member's Only."[165]
  • "Slappy Daze" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Slappy Days," which is a reference to the 1974 television sitcom Happy Days.

  • "SpongeBob on Parade" - This episode was originally going to be titled "SpongeBob's on Parade." The only difference is that the apostrophe and "s" after "SpongeBob" were removed in the finalized title.
  • "Ride Patrick Ride" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Ride Patrick, Ride!" The only difference is that the comma and the exclamation point were removed.
  • "Sir Urchin and Snail Fail" - This episode was originally titled "The Sir Urchin and Snail Fail Show!,"[170] which is nearly identical to the title of the in-universe show the episode is based on.
  • "FUN-Believable" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Funbelievable." It was changed to be more in line with the name of the in-universe show "FUN-Believable! With Rube" that it is referencing.
  • "Allergy Attack!" - This episode was originally just going to be titled "Allergy Attack" before having an exclamation mark added.

Season 14

  • "Single-Celled Defense" - This episode was originally going to be called "Single Celled Defense" before having a hyphen added.
  • "Buff for Puff" - This episode was originally titled "Krabs Meat."[171]
  • "BassWard" - This episode was originally called "Squid's Got Bass."[172] The original title was most likely changed due to containing an innuendo.
  • "Tango Tangle" - This episode was originally titled "Waltzing Wackos."[173]

  • "Sugar Squeeze" - According to the pitch bible, the episode was originally titled as "Sugar-Squeeze!," which adds an exclamation mark to the title.
  • "Hot Pearl-tato" - According to the pitch bible, the episode was originally titled as "Pearl-tato," with the only difference being that the word "Hot" was added.
  • "The Jelly Life" - This episode was originally titled "A Jelly Life," before "A" was changed to "The."[182]
  • "The Switch Glitch" - According to the storyboards and this segment's revealing by Cartoonlounge.de, this episode was originally just going to be titled "Switch Glitch," but later on, the word "The" was added to the title.[183][184]
  • "The Taste of Defeat" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Taste of Defeat," but later on, the word "The" was added to the title.
  • "Hats Off to Space" - According to two of Brandon Warren's posts on Instagram and the United States Copyright Office, this episode was originally going to be called "Hat's Off to Space," with the only difference being that the apostrophe was removed from the finalized title.[185][186]

  • "Mermaid Men and Barnacle Boys" - On the Paramount Press Express, this episode is listed as "Mermaid Men and the Boys."
  • "Krabsy the Klown" - This episode was originally titled "Krabsy the Clown." Paramount Press Express still refers to it by this title.

The Patrick Star Show

Season 1

  • "Patrick's Alley" - This episode may have originally been called "Pat's Alley."[187]
  • "Mid-Season Finale" - This episode was originally going to be titled "The Patrick Show Mid-Season Finale."[188]
  • "Uncredible Journey" - This episode was originally going to be titled "The Uncredible Journey." The only difference is that the word "The" was removed from the finalized title.[189][190][191]
  • "Backpay Payback" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Payback's a Squid." The original title was most likely changed due to containing an innuendo.
  • "Patrick's Got a Zoo Loose" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Patrick's Got an Alien Zoo Loose."
  • "Home ECCH!" - This episode was originally titled "Home Ecch."

  • "Chum Bucket List" - This episode was originally going to be called "The Chum Bucket List" the only difference is the word "The" removed.[193]
  • "10 & 1 Toilets" - This episode was originally called "10 and 1 Toilets" before having the word "and" changed to the and symbol.
  • "Big Baby Patrick" - This episode was originally titled "Big Baby Pat," with the only difference being that Patrick's name is not shortened.
  • "Face/Off-Model" - This episode was originally called "Face Off/Model."

Season 3

  • "Patrick Show Land" - This episode was originally called "The Patrick Show Land." The only difference is that the word "The" was removed from the finalized title.
