Synopsis

Act 1 (Prologue)

One day, SpongeBob and Patrick are floating down a lazy river in a wooden barrel while sipping cold drinks. Suddenly, SpongeBob notices that they are approaching a waterfall, and even though they start paddling backward with their hands, they end up falling into the depths. It turns out they were on a ride at Glove World!, where a photo was taken of them mid-drop, even though they ended up completely bandaged and in wheelchairs. After being taken home in an ambulance, SpongeBob announces it is the best time of the day, which leads Patrick to think it is barbecue time. SpongeBob clarifies that he meant that they are going to put the photo in a scrapbook, and upon hearing that, Patrick excitedly throws up his grill, which lands on Squidward.

SpongeBob looks for the right photo album at home and eventually places the photo among the classics, ensuring they will always remember the moment. Then SpongeBob starts flipping through the book, looking back at old memories, though Patrick doesn't recognize any of them. Eventually, they reach a page where SpongeBob has been replaced by Patrick's family members in all the pictures. SpongeBob realizes something is wrong and they head to Patrick's parents' house, but not without first making a stop at Goofy Goober's for heaps of ice cream. One of the employees there asks them if they should be somewhere else, so they remember to get back on track and eventually reach the Star house.

SpongeBob and Patrick search through the Star house.

When they enter, they don't find anyone in the living room and head to the kitchen after hearing a noise, assuming Bunny is cooking. They discover a huge mess and are attacked by a crazed toaster from a kitchen cabinet, but manage to hold it off by throwing SpongeBob's wallet at it. Following Patrick's suggestion, they next check the upstairs bathroom, thinking they might find either Cecil or GrandPat there. However, they only encounter Tinkle, who also attacks them in a frenzy, but they manage to slam the door on him in time. Then Patrick remembers to check his own room, where they play detectives in hopes of uncovering clues, but only find a peanut and SpongeBob's lost contact lens. While they are distracted, Patrick's time closet appears behind them and tries to capture them, but are saved just in time by Squidina, who informs them that none of Patrick's other family members are in there and starts explaining what happened from the beginning.

In a flashback, a few weeks earlier, Bunny puts her cleaning supplies into the time machine, thinking Patrick wouldn't mind. Then Cecil places his jumbo calzone inside to reheat it, believing it is a microwave. To top it off, even GrandPat tries to use it as a toilet after drinking a prune macchiato, unable to hold it any longer. But just before he can use it, the time closet comes to life and suck all three of them inside, causing them go back in time. Squidina begins outlining her plan to stop the time closet, but it suddenly bursts through the wall and sucks her in too. SpongeBob and Patrick flee in panic, but no matter where they run, the time closet keeps catching up until they finally manage to shake it off in the glass dome on top of the house. SpongeBob insists they have to stop the time closet from capturing anyone else, just as it grabs Granny Tentacles next door.

Act 2 ("Rock Bottom")

The duo returns to Patrick's room, where SpongeBob realizes that since the time closet is almost like a door, they need to think like a door.

At that moment, the bedroom door named Dutch speaks up and tells them he can teach them anything, they just have to open the door of perception in their minds. As he continues his educational speech, the time closet breaks through him, urging SpongeBob and Patrick to run away and hide. This sparks an idea in SpongeBob and remembers that all doors like puns, so they perform a terrible joke for the time closet to outsmart it. Patrick knocks the time closet out with a bottle while it is laughing, and it breaks down, so they clumsily repair it together.

SpongeBob decides it is time to go rescue Patrick's loved ones from his memories, starting with Squidina, as they have taken over his role in the past. However, Patrick suggests to first sit down and watch what happens to Squidina before saving her. On the time closet's screen, they see the past versions of themselves get on the wrong bus, which drops them off in Rock Bottom. Then the time closet appears, and Squidina emerges from it, completely unaware of where or when she is. Past SpongeBob and Patrick ask her what she is doing there, but before she can answer, they get scared by the creepy sounds of the place. Squidina decides to check out the local bus station while SpongeBob and Patrick wait. On the way, Squidina films the location with her camera, remarking on how spooky yet cinematic it is, only to spot SpongeBob and Patrick pass by on a bus. She tries to catch up but fails, so she decides to take the next bus back to Bikini Bottom and the time closet. First, however, she stops to record footage of the bizarre things that she sees in the town.

Squidina prank calls Squidward at the Krusty Krab with local teens.

After realizing that she has missed the next bus too, she runs into a group of local teenagers who convince her to join them in playing pranks on others. First, they put money at the end of an anglerfish lure, which a passerby picks up, only to get swallowed, causing the group to burst out laughing. Next, one of the teens make a prank call to the Krusty Krab, where Squidward tries to hang up the phone, but it is fixed to another anglerfish lure, which ends up devouring him. After that, they tie a balloon to a lady's leg, and she gets carried off into the sky. Squidina, impressed, tells them they are the coolest teenagers she is ever met. Meanwhile, they tie a balloon to her as well, and as she takes off, SpongeBob and Patrick reach through the time closet and pull her back into the present. At that moment, Squidina's camera falls and is picked up by one of the teens, only to be swallowed by another anglerfish. Even though all of Squidina's footage is lost, SpongeBob shows her the photo album, where one of the photos has already changed back to include him.

Act 3 ("Ripped Pants")

File:SpongeBob and Patrick's Timeline Twist-Up 360.png
Cecil rips his pants.

Next, they plan to rescue Cecil, but first, they sit down once again to observe what is happening to him. Cecil arrives at Goo Lagoon via the time closet, where he asks a fish roasting marshmallows if he is seen his huge calzone, but he hasn't. As Cecil continues his search, a past version of SpongeBob pops out from the sand and asks the same fish for two marshmallows which he uses to create a barbell out of them and a stick. Cecil follows him and asks if he is seen his calzone, but SpongeBob says he is busy impressing the crowd with weightlifting. Cecil then demonstrates a complex method for lifting the barbell, which SpongeBob immediately tries and collapses before using it. Cecil decides to show off his own strength, but as he strains, his pants rip, causing everyone around to laugh.

Cecil keeps ripping his pants for laughs and quickly rises to fame, performing in comedy shows. He becomes a recognized model and expands his fashion empire with even making his own fashion company. Eventually, winter arrives, and his fans who follow his ripped fashion begin to get tired of the cold. As an angry mob gathers around the company building, Cecil thinks they want to see the ultimate rip and tears himself in half. The crowd then charges at him, only for him to get pulled back through the time closet into his proper timeline.

Act 4 ("Neptune's Spatula")

As Cecil gets back, he tapes himself back together with duct tape, and SpongeBob notices another photo in the album has been restored to its original form. In one of the pictures, however, Bunny is still shown from the time SpongeBob pulled the golden spatula from the grease. They look at the time closet, through which the past versions of SpongeBob and Patrick visit the golden spatula which can only be wielded by fry cooks worthy like King Neptune himself. SpongeBob asks Patrick to take a picture of him holding it, but just then, Bunny arrives through the time closet and stops him from touching it.

First, she scrubs it clean, but the detergent loosens the grease, allowing her to easily pull the spatula out and hand it to SpongeBob. Neptune magically appears through a portal to see who removed the spatula, but he refuses to believe it was SpongeBob as he is too weak. SpongeBob explains that it was Bunny, whom Neptune immediately sees as superior due to her muscular arms and shared ability to strike heroic poses. He appoints her as his personal chef, and they ride a tandem bike to his palace in Atlantis.

Bunny stops the crater from erupting.

Neptune shows her the royal kitchen where Bunny straightaway starts making a soup, insisting that Neptune eat it. However, the soup immediately makes Neptune feel sick, so Bunny puts him to bed and begins handling royal duties in his place. Neptune hands over his trident, which Bunny wants to clean, but Neptune forbids the use of abrasive cleaners. Bunny then flies away with the trident all the way to Bikini Bottom Elementary, where she prevents a massive anchor from falling on the school by deflecting it, causing it to crash onto the Chum Bucket instead. Next, a dam bursts, and Bunny returns the water, sealing the crack with a bandage. Then, a volcano erupts, completely flooding Bikini Bottom with lava, but Bunny mops it up and plugs the crater with a pacifier.

The townsfolk begin praising Bunny as their queen, which enrages Neptune when he sees it on the news. Neptune challenges Bunny to the ultimate trial: defeat the Kraken in the Poseidome to prove who the true god of the sea is. Just as the competition begins, SpongeBob and Patrick pull Bunny back into the present, leaving Neptune to face the monster alone. His old trident malfunctions, and just as he is about to be defeated, Bunny returns to give him his trident in good condition. However, she had scrubbed it so thoroughly that it melts in Neptune's hands, and the Kraken eats him twice because he tasted so good.

Act 5 ("Help Wanted" and "Plankton!")

Although Bunny has returned and the picture in the album is restored, SpongeBob notices that GrandPat appears in the memory of SpongeBob's first day at the Krusty Krab. They see a younger SpongeBob heading to the restaurant ready to start work, but when SpongeBob arrives, Mr. Krabs takes down the Help Wanted sign and hires GrandPat as his new fry cook instead. Disappointed, SpongeBob walks away while GrandPat meets Squidward at the cash register and annoys him by calling him his "paperboy" before heading into the kitchen. GrandPat claims he can easily be the restaurant's fry cook, having worked at fancier places before. But suddenly, several busloads of anchovies swarm the restaurant, overwhelming it.

Seeing this, GrandPat quits and begins to eat a Krabby Patty outside, only to have Plankton sneak up and try to buy it off him. Plankton offers a huge amount of money and gets the patty, but GrandPat becomes suspicious and stops him at the Chum Bucket to ask what it is for. Plankton reveals he plans to use it to take over the world and just needs to analyze it after pressing a big red button. However, GrandPat stomps on him and presses the button himself, taking back the Krabby Patty which he uses to start his own global fast food restaurant empire. Over time, he becomes a ruthless ruler over all of Bikini Bottom, delighting in tossing patties to the desperate people who fight over them. Also, he traps Plankton in a small cage hung from his necklace and forces Mr. Krabs to work as his dishwashing slave. SpongeBob and Patrick arrive to return GrandPat to his proper timeline, but he refuses and has his guards lock them up.

Present day SpongeBob gives his past self the hydro-dynamic spatula.

It is then revealed that these two were alternate timeline versions and the present-day SpongeBob and Patrick are still safe at the Star house. Squidina comes up with a solution: she rewinds the time closet so that SpongeBob can go back and buy a hydro-dynamic spatula, then give it to his past self to save the day at the Krusty Krab. Meanwhile, the others return GrandPat to the present and think everything is fixed. But then, they realize that they forgot about Granny Tentacles, who has taken over the town. SpongeBob then takes a picture of her ruling the city to place it in his photo album.

Trivia

General

  • This is the fifth TV movie of the series, following "Atlantis SquarePantis," "Truth or Square," "SpongeBob's Big Birthday Blowout," and "Kreepaway Kamp."
  • This is the first episode for many things:
    • The first episode in airing order to have Shane Richardson as the only credited art director; previous art director Peter Bennett is no longer credited due to his passing on May 17, 2024.
    • The first episode to have four storyboard directors.
    • The first episode since season 9's "Kenny the Cat" to have four writers.
    • The first episode where Incidental 24Q makes his first appearance in 26 years, previously appearing in season 1's "MuscleBob BuffPants."
    • King Neptune's first physical appearance in the main series in seven years, since season 11's "High Sea Diving."
    • Granny Tentacles' first physical appearance in the main series in 13 years, since her debut in season 8's "Chum Fricassee," although here, she uses her current design from The Patrick Star Show.
    • The first special in the series to premiere in June.
    • The first episode where Tinkle, Bunny's toaster, and Leilani make their first appearances in the main series.
      • While there have been other past episodes to have other toasters with the exact same design as Bunny's toaster (such as season 7's "Buried in Time"), this is the first episode to have Bunny's toaster specifically.
      • This episode also marks the first time Leilani appears without her boyfriend, Skip, in four years since The Patrick Star Show season 1 episode "Pat-a-thon," which was also her debut episode, as Skip would debut in Leilani's next appearance, season 1's "Mid-Season Finale."
    • The first episode where the bedroom door is given a proper name (being Dutch).
    • The first episode to depict the time closet as a fully sentient character.
    • The first usage of "Oyster Girls" in 24 years not counting its usage in the video game The Cosmic Shake. The last episode to use this track was "Sailor Mouth."
      • In addition, this marks the first usage of the tracks "Next Door Neighbour" and "Reach for the Stars" since they debuted in "Help Wanted" 26 years ago. As a result, these tracks hold the record for the longest gap of a track.
      • This is also the first time the track “In The Taverna” has been used in the series since "Neptune's Spatula" in 25 years.
    • The first time in almost 13 years (since season 9's "Plankton's Pet") that Karen uses her wall form.
    • The first episode since "Neptune's Spatula" where King Neptune is depicted with five fingers on each hand.
    • The first special to have Eric Bryan as an animation director.
    • The first main series episode since season 2's "Big Pink Loser" to feature Patrick's "M"-shaped eyebrows since their removal in "Wormy."
    • The first TV movie since "Atlantis SquarePantis" to not be an anniversary special.
    • The first TV movie to not have promotional artwork made for it.
  • This is the second episode for a few things:
  • This is the third episode to have three supervising directors.
  • During the sequence where Squidina is in Rock Bottom, Squidward and the Krusty Krab are seen, despite him and the restaurant not appearing in the original "Rock Bottom" episode. Similarly, Plankton appears in the "Neptune's Spatula" and "Help Wanted" sequences, despite not originally appearing in both episodes.
  • Perch Perkins appears in the "Neptune's Spatula" sequence, despite not debuting until "The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie".
  • Scooter appears in the "Ripped Pants" timeline with his teal with yellow flower shorts instead of his light pink with yellow flowers shorts.
  • The way that SpongeBob almost runs into the time closest to save Squidina resembles one of his stock art.
  • Unlike their previous main series appearance in season 14's "Sheldon SquarePants," Bunny and Cecil do not look older in this episode.
  • All scenes set in the timelines of older episodes appear to have a slightly darker and purple-like tone, as well as a noise effect.

Episode references

  • A framed picture of SpongeBob and Squidward from season 1's "Jellyfishing" can be seen on a table in SpongeBob's living room.
    • Also, a frame of SpongeBob from season 2's "Frankendoodle" is seen on the wall.
  • Moments from older episodes are shown in SpongeBob's scrapbook:
  • The Komedy Krab from season 2's "Squirrel Jokes" returns.
  • Just like SpongeBob from "Rock Bottom", Squidina tries to catch up with the bus, but she can't because the road is pointing up, and it prevents her from going up. She also climbs and falls the same way that SpongeBob did.
  • The events of multiple episodes are rewritten by Patrick's family, which include season 1's "Help Wanted," "Ripped Pants," "Rock Bottom," and "Neptune's Spatula."
  • This episode's portrayal of these events replicates the animation style of the original episodes, with the character designs looking like how they did back in season 1.
    • Patrick's eyebrows are shaped like M's in the "Rock Bottom," "Neptune's Spatula" and "Help Wanted" sequences.
    • Sandy's suit is depicted with three dots (for one brief second) and her tail is not visible in the "Ripped Pants" sequence.
    • Mr. Krabs' eyelids are pink in the "Help Wanted" sequence. Additionally, he and Squidward are colored differently to match how they appeared in the original episode.
  • At one point, SpongeBob and Patrick wear the same hippie costumes they had in season 7's "SpongeBob's Last Stand."
  • Mildred from "Ink Lemonade" appears in the Rock Bottom scene.
    • This also marks her first appearance in seven years since 2018's "Ink Lemonade."
  • Some of the Rock Bottomites at the bus station previously appeared in season 11's "The Night Patty."
  • Audio from "Neptune's Spatula" is used when SpongeBob, Patrick. Squidina, and Cecil first uses the Time Closet's TV to change to that part of the past.
  • Patrick saying, "I was just starting to remember I have a sister", is a reference to season 2's "Something Smells."
  • Triton and Queen Amphitrite from season 6's "The Clash of Triton" are shown pictured.
  • Most of the music editing in the alternate timelines are similar to the actual episodes referenced, albeit with minor alterations.
  • SpongeBob claiming he is a "simple sponge" could be a reference to the SpongeBob Musical song "(Just a) Simple Sponge."
  • GrandPat and Mr. Krabs' rivalry from "Pearl Wants to Be a Star" is brought up after the former is hired as a Krusty Krab employee.
  • Karen's analyzer from "Plankton!" is seen again. Her personality is also more in-line with her earliest appearances.
  • The same wormhole from "A Skin Wrinkle in Time" appears again when the Star family members travel through time.

Cultural references

Errors

  • SpongeBob asks Patrick if he remembers the time he ripped his pants. However, Patrick was not actually in that episode.
  • As the bus with Past SpongeBob and Past Patrick aboard is about to leave Rock Bottom, it doesn't pass by Squidina in the prior scene. This is unlike what happened in the episode of the same name, when the bus with Patrick goes past SpongeBob while exiting.
  • Mr. Krabs' eyes changes back from pink to red in GrandPat's rewritten segment after he takes over Bikini Bottom.
    • This could be explained as that part was the abridged "Plankton!" segment. In that episode, he had his normal red eyelids.
