"The Smoking Peanut" is a SpongeBob SquarePants episode from season 2. In this episode, SpongeBob throws a peanut at an oyster in the zoo, causing it to throw a tantrum.

Synopsis

It is the annual "Free Day" at the Bikini Bottom Zoo, and Mr. Krabs helps himself to anything he can get his claws on. Meanwhile, SpongeBob and Patrick go to Oyster Stadium to see Clamu the giant oyster perform tricks. Unfortunately, as they enter the arena, they find Clamu is sleeping. Patrick prepares to leave, but SpongeBob tries to wake Clamu up by throwing a peanut at her, followed by her wailing loudly. SpongeBob calls Patrick back in anticipation of the show, only for Clamu to cause mayhem and thrash around and attack the zookeepers, crying inconsolably all the while.

After being questioned by a zoo attendant, SpongeBob and Patrick leave the park. Feeling deeply guilty, SpongeBob believes he is responsible for the incident. Meanwhile, Patrick resolves to investigate the crime and uncover the cause of Clamu's distress. At home, SpongeBob tries to console himself, thinking the incident will soon blow over. However, his hopes are dashed when he turns on the TV to find the oyster incident dominating the news. The Realistic Fish Head reports that Clamu's sobs are so powerful they can be heard across the globe—even above the ocean's surface.

With his guilt growing, SpongeBob goes to Squidward and Sandy for advice, but just like Patrick, both are concerned with finding and punishing the culprit. To make matters worse, Patrick reveals that he found an incriminating bag of peanuts left near SpongeBob's home, stating that he is getting close to solving the mystery.

Eventually, policemen enter SpongeBob's house and question him on the incident. SpongeBob admits to everything they ask him, but instead of arresting him, they conclude from their evidence that Patrick is falsely the culprit, and drive away with him. SpongeBob is shocked at what has happened to his friend, and dashes after the car.

Patrick is taken to Oyster Stadium, where he is chained to a platform in the middle of Clamu's enclosure and vengefully pelted with peanuts by the angry audience for his supposed crime. Unwilling to let Patrick take the blame, SpongeBob arrives at the stadium and asks everyone to stop. He finally confesses to having thrown the peanut, apologizing to Clamu, Patrick, and the people of Bikini Bottom. The fish in the audience, upon hearing this confession, refuse to accept his apology, somehow concluding that he is merely Patrick's accomplice. They decide to throw peanuts at both of them, but before they can, a zookeeper (possibly the one from earlier in the episode) stops them, announcing that he has captured the real culprit — Mr. Krabs, much to SpongeBob, Patrick, and everyone's shock.

The zookeeper also reveals that the true cause of Clamu's distress was not the thrown peanut, but that Mr. Krabs stole her pearl while she was asleep from last night; the peanut only made her wake up and notice that her pearl was nowhere to be seen. The zookeeper returns the pearl to Clamu. To everyone's surprise, the pearl turns out to be an egg, hatching into a baby oyster. Having been reunited with her offspring, Clamu is finally happy again. With the truth of the case finally revealed, SpongeBob and Patrick's names are cleared. The crowd is moved by the touching scene before angrily glaring at Mr. Krabs for stealing Clamu's offspring and his greedy actions. Rather than admitting what he did was wrong, Mr. Krabs makes a pathetic excuse that it is Free Day, and he is promptly buried in a pile of peanuts the audience throws at him, much to his discomfort.

  • The countries that are seen outside of Bikini Bottom are Egypt, India, and likely the Netherlands, because of the Giza Pyramid and Sphinx, the Taj Mahal, and a windmill.
  • Since August 2019, the scene where SpongeBob goes to sit down while holding a remote to watch TV has become an internet meme. The screenshot makes it look like SpongeBob is getting up from his chair and the captions are added saying "Ight Imma Head Out" along with a scenario.
  • The scene where SpongeBob confesses to the police has become a meme. SpongeBob would instead say "Police, I swear to God, not simping for a child."
    • The actual lyric is "Policemen swear to God, love seeping from their guns," from the 2017 song "Little Dark Age" by MGMT.
  • Two images of Patrick from this episode have become memes.
    • The first is the face he makes whiles saying that all of the clues are coming together, often accompanied by a caption that describes something dubious or immoral that the author did.
    • The second is the image of him in chains with a blank expression in the Oyster Stadium while the background fish boo him, usually accompanied by or requesting unpopular opinions.

  • This episode, "Naughty Nautical Neighbors," and "The Whole Tooth" are the only episodes to date to use "Hawaiian Train" outside a title card. Unlike the other two, "The Smoking Peanut" plays the track exclusively outside the title card.
  • Peanuts are known by their land name in this episode; later seasons refer to them by the term "seanut".
    • When Spongebob pulls the bag out of his pocket, "seanuts" is written on it.
  • After SpongeBob throws the peanut at Clamu, she does not cry the instant after she wakes up; instead she searches around her enclosure in horror before bawling. This gives the hint toward the end it was not the peanut that caused her rampage, and that something of hers was missing.
  • This is the last episode showcased on both The Seascape Capers DVD and The First 100 Episodes Disc 4.
  • This is also the second and last episode to have Carson Kugler as storyboard director. He would later be a storyboard artist, starting with "Welcome to the Chum Bucket".
  • For unknown reasons, this episode and its sister episode were rated 13+ on Amazon Prime Video in August 2020.[citation needed]

Rough Draft Korea?
  • In the opening credits, the "S" in "Storyboard directed by" is capitalized instead of lowercase.
  • While SpongeBob is running to Sandy's treedome saying, "I'll ask Sandy, she'll know what to do," a bubble transition starts, a blue card from Rough Draft Korea can be seen for split second.
  • When Clamu's loud wailing makes SpongeBob and Patrick fly to their seats, the peanuts in SpongeBob's bag fly out, but when Patrick says, "Now this is a show!" his bag is full of peanuts again.

  • When SpongeBob knocks on Squidward's door, Patrick's house is nowhere to be seen.

  • Patrick's eyelids are usually purple, but when he says, "Hey, SpongeBob!" when SpongeBob is trying to open his door, his eyelids are pink instead of purple.
  • Oyster Stadium is in a walled zoo, but SpongeBob can see the stadium, top-to-bottom, clearly from his house.
  • When SpongeBob is telling everyone he threw the peanut and not Patrick, Clamu's oyster pearl can be seen in front of Clamu in one of the shots.
  • When SpongeBob is about to go inside his house after Patrick says he will investigate, the lights are off, but when he enters, they are on.
    • This error happens again when SpongeBob says "Good luck with that" to Patrick.

Mr. Krabs' belt buckle's colors are... swapped?
  • When the zookeeper pulls Mr. Krabs' pants off, his belt buckle colors are reversed to yellow on the inside and black on the outside, but in the next scene, the belt is back to normal.
  • When the zookeeper holds up the oyster's pearl, the close-up of the pearl shows it in front of a sky background despite the zookeeper being surrounded on all sides by the stadium's walls.

  • When SpongeBob remarks on how the pearl is actually an egg, part of his belt is not filled in.
  • Clamu's pearl starts to crack like an egg to reveal that the baby oyster is hatched from Clamu's pearl, leaving the bottom part of Clamu's pearl under the baby oyster and some pieces of Clamu's pearl around the baby oyster. However, in the scene where Clamu and the baby oyster embrace each other, the bottom part of Clamu's pearl is gone and the number of pieces of Clamu's pearl around the baby oyster becomes lower compared to the previous scene.
  • When SpongeBob and Patrick are running in to see the oyster, Patrick is on the right, but in the next shot, he is on the left.
