Video game

Nickelodeon Party Blast is a Nicktoons crossover party video game that was released in 2002 for the GameCube, Xbox, and PC. The video game was developed by Data Design Interactive and published by Infogrames.

The game features characters from the Nickelodeon television series SpongeBob SquarePants, Rugrats, The Wild Thornberrys, Rocket Power, Invader Zim, and The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius, with CatDog as the hosts.

Gameplay

There are eight playable characters and seven different party modes. When playing as player 1, the player can choose Blast, Replay, and Cup challenge. Players 2, 3, and 4 have a mode called "Party Play." Each mode takes place across five stages, with the fourth stage being a boss challenge against a non-playable boss opponent.

  1. Food Fight: Players throw food at each other to be the last one standing. If a player gets hit with food, they will lose points. If a player runs out of points, they will be eliminated from the game. The last player standing, or the player with the most points if there are multiple players standing when time runs out, is the winner.
  2. Pipe Challenge/Pipes: Players compete to create pipelines to fill various objects. Once the object is full, the player who filled it earns points. The player with the most points when time runs out is the winner.
  3. Squirt and Splash: Players squirt each other with giant squirt guns to get points. The player with the most points when time runs out is the winner.
  4. Roll-A-Ball: Players compete to earn the most points by scoring baskets and performing tricks in an arena. The player with the most points when time runs out is the winner.
  5. Coin Rally: Players race on various courses using different vehicles. The player with the most points at the end is the winner.
  6. Clam bonus stages: A bonus mode where each stage is a different game involving clams. The player with the most points when time runs out is the winner. These stages can only be unlocked by collecting silver stars or through a cheat code. Unlike the other modes, there is no boss challenge.
  7. Gooze Squirter: Players have to squirt goo at each other using special weapons to earn points. The player with the most points at the end is the winner. This mode is unlocked after completing every stage of the first five modes. Unlike the other modes, Gooze Squirter only has one stage.

  • There's a placeholder for the game selection screen.
  • There's an unused screen adjustment setting. Interestingly, this option also has an early version of the title screen.
  • Zim has two unused textures for his helmet in Basket Brawl.
  • The game was originally planned to release on PlayStation 2 as models and textures of the PlayStation 2 controller exist in the game's files.[2]

Prerelease

  • The game was first pitched around November 2000 as "NickToons Olympics." It was proposed again in March 2001 into what would become the final game.
  • Squidward and Donnie from The Wild Thornberrys were intended to appear in the game.[1][3]

Reception

The game has received extremely negative reviews from critics, with most criticizing the game's controls and sound effects. Review aggregator Metacritic gave the Xbox version a 19 out of 100, indicating "overwhelming dislike,"[4] while IGN gave the Xbox version a 1.1 out of 10, writing, "With so many great franchises, this could've been a decent party game. Instead, what we're left with is a poor-looking, poor-sounding, and poor-playing game. Like the name implies, this game is only (barely) worth a spare nickel for price of admission."[5]
