Video game

SpongeBob Tower Defense (titled as SpongeBob SquarePants Tower Defense and shortened as SpongeBob TD in the description) is an officially licensed SpongeBob SquarePants online multiplayer video game created and developed by Wonder Works Studio in collaboration with Paramount under the group "Krabby Krew" with the help of the Roblox user WondieRB. It is available to play for free as an experience on the Roblox platform.

This game is the spiritual successor to SpongeBob Simulator by Gamefam and is followed by Steal a SpongeBob, which is also developed by Wonder Works Studio and the assets from SpongeBob Tower Defense are reused in Steal a SpongeBob.

This game acts similar to any other tower defense game on the platform, where the player has to protect a certain location or object from getting damaged, by placing units to fend off mobs that walk along a path that leads to said object or location.

The game is actively updated every Friday, with these updates introducing new features, units, worlds, codes, crates, events, and more.

On March 14, 2025, this game was featured in The Hunt: Mega Edition[3] where in SpongeBob Tower Defense, the player could obtain the Perch Perkins unit with a low chance and a Token from completing the Bikini Bottom world and a Mega Token from completing the Flying Dutchman's Ship world and finding it from the cave at Bikini Bottom as well as the Defender of the Deep badge. The event ended on March 25, 2025.

SpongeBob Tower Defense was one of the 25 Roblox games to participate in the event, the other Roblox games being a dusty trip, Arsenal, Basketball Legends, Bayside High School, Blade League, Car Crushers 2, Chained, Clip It, Drive World, Eat the World, Fisch, Hell's Kitchen, Infection Gunfight, IT GIRL, Metro Life, Natural Disaster Survival, Pet Simulator 99, Pressure, Regretevator, RIVALS, Tower Defense Simulator, untitled boxing game, untitled tag game, and World // Zero.

This is also the second time an official SpongeBob SquarePants Roblox experience was featured in a The Hunt event, with the first one being SpongeBob Simulator. After this event, the Flying Dutchman's ship world became a challenge world and the Bikini Bottom world became a rouge world.

On August 8, 2025, an event based on Olipop's Pineapple Paradise product made to promote The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants started. Players can complete a series of quests hosted by SpongeBob and the Flying Dutchman, split across the game's five modes. Completing quests earn the player multiple of that mode's design of OLIPOP, which acts as a food item. Completing a full set of quests for a game mode awards the player with an OLIPOP relic, which designs differ between each mode. Collecting all five relics rewards the player with the Prehistoric Gary unit and Haunted House Boat mount. The event ended on August 17, 2025.

For each day of the event's span, the first 500 players who complete the quest during that day are awarded with a code to redeem a four-pack of the soda.

The event also added a TV where the player can watch the trailer for The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants. It was moved to the entrance to the Challenge worlds to make room for the Kamp Koral event.

Kamp Koral Event

An in-game event based on the spin-off series Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years happened from August 22 to September 5, 2025. This event introduces a new story map as well as 7 new units, mounts, and a pet based on the spin-off.

Gameplay

File:New Reef Retreat.png
The Reef Retreat, the game's spawn area.

The game is built in the Roblox engine. The player can walk, sprint, jump, double jump, and mid-air dash. Being a Tower Defense game, the basic gameplay revolves around defending a certain object or location from waves of mobs, placing units to defeat the crowds. Upon joining the game, the player spawns in front of SpongeBob's house at The Reef Retreat, and are able to choose their first basic unit, either being SpongeBob, Patrick, or Squidward. The player can go to Patrick's AFK rock to get rewards, go to Squidward's challenges, buy stuff from the Mr. Krabs merchant, get traits from Sandy, and summon creatures at the Poseidome Colosseum at the Summon Pool. The game features four game modes the player can choose from.

File:Summon Pool.png
The Summon Pool.

Units are the game's main element and take the appearance of various locations and characters from the franchise. They have a total of nine rarities: Common, Uncommon, Rare, Epic, Legendary, Mythic, Limited, Secret, and Exotic. Many units also have different attack types: Full, Splash, Pierce, Line, Single, and Resource. Units can be upgraded by completing chapters in which they participated, or by feeding them various food items.

They are primarily obtained using gems at the Summon Pool in The Reef Retreat. There are three different Summon banners that can be selected: Standard, which has the lowest prices but with worse pulls, Boosted which is pricier but with better pulls, and Exclusive, which have exclusive units but can be only summoned with Magic Conch shells. Above the Summon banners are the Mythic Pity and Legendary Pity counters, which raise if the player does not get a Legendary or Mythic unit.

After 200/400 summons without getting a unit of these rarities, you are granted a free random Legendary or Mythic unit. The counters will reset if the player summons a unit of these rarities before they're finished. Traits are modifiers that can be applied to units, giving stat boosts or special effects. They can be accessed from the Sandy Cheeks Traits section in the Summon area.

Traits can only be applied using Trait Rerolls or Golden Trait Rerolls, which assign the selected unit one of thirteen Traits, the latter giving much more favorable chances. Similar to summons, trait rerolls have Neptune Pity and Golden Neptune pity counters, which act in the same way. Players can fuse units at the Fusions section, which require five duplicates of a selected unit. Each Fusion results in the unit obtaining one star, which adds +10% damage, this can be done up to five times, resulting in a max of +50% on any unit.

Story

File:RobloxScreenShot20241224 114527531.png
Conch Street Act 1, the first unlockable act.

The Story game mode is the main and first unlockable mode. It can be entered from outside of the Krusty Krab in The Reef Retreat, where there are many buses parked in front that allow the player to teleport to a variety of maps. There are currently seven worlds which all include two acts, split up into six chapters each, totaling to twelve chapters per map, which also include two infinite chapters. There are also four different difficulties the player can choose from: Normal, Hard, Nightmare, and Davy Jones' Locker.

The basic gameplay of this mode is simple, the player has to protect a location from fifteen waves of mobs, which follow a strict path to the location you must protect. Players can purchase and place units they have obtained along the path, which attack and kill the mobs. Players can also upgrade their units using coins, which are given to the player for each mob killed. Along with the mobs, bosses can also appear, which are larger and higher in health. A final boss appears at the end of the fifteenth wave, and if killed, ends the chapter. Completing a chapter rewards the player with items and/or exclusive units.

Challenges

The Challenges game mode is the second unlockable mode, available once the player reaches level 10. It can be entered from the lake section of The Reef Retreat. There is a total of five unique challenge worlds, considered to be more challenging, which switch out every thirty minutes. There are three difficulties the Challenge worlds can be, each one having a different number of conditions: Hard with one, Nightmare with two, and Davy Jones' Locker with three. Beating a challenge world rewards the player with various loot, including Challenger Tokens, which can be spent at Squidward Challenger Shack located nearby.

Raids

The Raids game mode is the third unlockable mode, available once the player reaches level 25. It is very similar to challenges, featuring the same three difficulties and similar gameplay. Raids, however, are far more difficult. There are currently only three unique raid worlds, which switch out every thirty minutes, and also have twenty-five waves instead of fifteen. During a raid, new areas that mobs can spawn from occasionally appear, which trigger a cutscene and also create new paths. Beating a raid world rewards the player with various loot, including Golden spatulas, which can be spent on exclusive skins or items at the Plankton & Karen Raid Shop located nearby.

Other

There are three factions that the player can join, with them being titled Band Geeks, Jellyspotters, and Goofy Goobers. Leaderboards for them can be found at the Hall of Champions next to Mrs. Puff's Mount Shop where the player can buy mounts.

Trivia

General

  • As mentioned above, the assets for this game would later be reused in Steal a SpongeBob, which is also developed by Wonder Works Studio.
  • This game is part of the SpongeBob 25 campaign, along with being the third officially-licensed Roblox experience to feature SpongeBob and the franchise, the first being Nickverse and the second being SpongeBob Simulator. It shows that Nickelodeon is very interested with doing a lot with Roblox.
File:SBTD on the Google Play Roblox Page.png
SpongeBob Tower Defense as seen in Roblox's trailer on Google Play.
  • The game is featured on the trailer on Roblox's Google Play page[5]
  • The Krusty Krab, Chum Bucket, bus, and SpongeHenge locations use models from the unofficial SpongeBob SquarePants fangame The Spongy Construction Project[6][7][8][9].
    • It was rumored that the game stole the models without permission until December 25, 2024, where during a chat with Encyclopedia SpongeBobia's former rollback and discussion moderator OggySimpsonsFan333 (formerly SquidTron C) on Discord, The Spongy Construction Project developer spongeis5 confirmed that the developers of SpongeBob Tower Defense were given permission to use the models by the developers of The Spongy Construction Project when they found the models in the toolbox and unknowingly put them in the game[10].
    • The only differences of these models are that the outlines are missing and the Krusty Krab sign is different.
    • However, The Spongy Construction Project updated the model for the Krusty Krab earlier in 2024, making the model used in SpongeBob Tower Defense a reuse of the outdated version.
    • The models of SpongeBob's house, Squidward's house, and Patrick's house are the only main location models to not be reused from The Spongy Construction Project.
    • The Barg'N-Mart also had a model in The Spongy Construction Project but the developers of SpongeBob Tower Defense instead created their own model for the Barg'N-Mart, which is similar looking to what it looks like in SpongeBob Simulator.
File:SBTDAIcon.png
The icon is speculated to be AI.
  • One of the icons for the game, an image of Plankton in front of a red background was widely speculated to be made with generative artificial intelligence. This is due to the image's uncanny features such as his teeth, arms that seemingly have fingernails, a strange wrinkle above his eyebrow, and the overall hyper realistic aspects such as the textures on his body. This icon only lasted for a few hours, however, and was shortly reverted.
  • Unlike Jellyfish Fields and Conch Street, the Krusty Krab and Chum Bucket worlds have different skyboxes during chapters 6-8, that being a more nighttime theme instead of orange theme.
  • Karen's wall form in the Chum Bucket world is different in the Chapters 1-5 and 6-10 versions with the former being Karen's normal face in 1-5 and the latter being an angry face in 6-10.
  • Krusty Krab is the first unit in SpongeBob Tower Defense to not be based on any SpongeBob character.
  • In the trailer, Hibernation Sandy is shown as a Jellyfish Fields mob, despite not being a Jellyfish Fields mob in the actual game and instead being a mythical unit.
    • However, Hibernation Sandy is a mob in the Sandy's treedome map.
  • The name for Bubble Bowl Event was predicted when the Bubble Bowl Event page on SpongeBob Tower Defense Wiki was created by Teen Titans Go! Beast Boy on February 18, 2025[11].
File:Bubble Bowl Event Trailer Players.png
Many Roblox players in the trailer for the Bubble Bowl Event.
  • Many Roblox players appear in the Bubble Bowl Event Trailer for the game such as Gravycatman.
  • Slappy is named "Slappy Laszlo" in this game, which is a name not used in the show but in videos and other properties.

Errors

  • On the game's description, SquarePants is misspelled as "Squarepants."
File:Grandma SquarePants misspelling error in SpongeBob Tower Defense.png
SquarePants is misspelled as "Square Pants."
  • Grandma SquarePants is misspelled as Grandma "Square Pants."
  • The Primitive SpongeBob unit is incorrectly titled "SpongeGar"[12], which is a completely different character.
  • For some odd reason, both black out renders of Squidly Tentacles and Planktonamor appear in the index despite them being not released at the time.
    • However, it was fixed at one day after the 18th update but then returned on May 7, 2025.
    • The Pioneer Rock had the same problem, however it was mistook for a unit that most players didn't get despite them getting the unit and the mount. (if they did 5000 takedowns however)
