Synopsis

The chocolate balloon.

It is Valentine's Day and SpongeBob is busy giving Valentines to all his friends. He is also working with Sandy to give Patrick a very special present - a hot-air balloon made of chocolate. SpongeBob tells Patrick he has a present prepared for him and Patrick is desperate to know what it is, but he will not tell him to avoid ruining the surprise before Sandy arrives with it.

SpongeBob takes Patrick to a Valentine's Day Carnival and Patrick thinks that this is the present, only to realize that it is not. As he tries to figure out what the present is, SpongeBob calls Sandy, who is flying the chocolate balloon to the carnival, and tells her about his curiousness. Unfortunately, a flock of ferocious chocolate-eating scallops attack her and she tells SpongeBob that she is going to be a little late. She tells him to bring Patrick up to the Ferris wheel and that she will meet him there.

SpongeBob tells Patrick his present is on the Ferris wheel, and they position themselves at the top as planned. But Sandy is still not there yet so SpongeBob calls her; meanwhile at that moment, the scallops cause the balloon to lose air and derail her off-course, so she tells SpongeBob to switch to plan B. Therefore, SpongeBob is forced to lie about the gift and Patrick's present is limited to a "friendly handshake," and he is grumpy for the rest of the day at the carnival. Later, the two are sitting on a bench, when everybody thanks SpongeBob for giving them presents. Consumed by anger and jealousy that a handshake is not the same as the others, Patrick goes berserk and wreaks havoc across the Valentine's Day Carnival.

He ends up cornering several citizens, including SpongeBob, at a dead-end at the Goo Lagoon dock; while SpongeBob agrees he deserves it rather than the others, Patrick still claims he never got a gift from them and won't take it when they toss him valentines of their own. Just as he is about to attack everybody and the frightened SpongeBob braces for the inevitable, Sandy comes down just in time with the repaired chocolate balloon, having gotten the scallops to help her bring it to him. SpongeBob and the citizens desperately tell Patrick to turn around, but he does not budge, not believing his real valentine is behind him after what SpongeBob did earlier. SpongeBob is sad thinking Patrick will never get his gift until Sandy greets him, and Patrick finally turns around and notices the chocolate balloon, recognizing it as his real valentine as SpongeBob presents it. He gets excited and jumps on the balloon, only to pop it when he eats it as it was a bubble, causing melted chocolate inside the balloon to explode all over the carnival. As the episode ends, Patrick gently tells SpongeBob that he didn't have to get him anything.

Reception

"The first great Patrick episode! I love how Patrick instantly goes from having his feelings hurt to an Incredible Hulk-like rage. Bill Fagerbakke really came into his own in this one."

Trivia

General

  • Here is a list of people SpongeBob gives Valentine's Day gifts to:
    • Squidward gets a colored heart made out of paper.
    • Mrs. Puff also receives the same kind of heart as Squidward.
    • Plankton is given a tiny heart.
    • Sandy eats the chocolate heart bubble SpongeBob blows for her.
    • Patrick is delivered the chocolate hot air balloon that SpongeBob and Sandy had planned to fly into the carnival.
  • There is an online game based on this episode called Love Hurts!
  • This is the first episode for a few things:
    • The first episode in the series where Plankton appears without Mr. Krabs.
    • The first episode where a microorganism excluding Plankton is shown in the SpongeBob SquarePants series.
    • The first episode to be copyrighted in 2000.
    • The first time Patrick tried to hurt SpongeBob.
    • The first seasonal/holiday themed episode to take place during the day.
    • The first seasonal/holiday episode where Gary and Mr. Krabs do not appear.
  • SpongeBob and Sandy's plan is as follows:
    • 1. SpongeBob and Patrick arrive at the carnival.
    • 2. Both of them ride on the Ferris wheel, onto the top.
    • 3. Sandy flies in with the heart-shaped chocolate balloon towards Patrick.
    • 4. Patrick is thrilled. Mission accomplished.
      • The plan ultimately falls apart when Sandy encounters chocolate-eating scallops before she could bring the balloon in, thus sending her off course until she tames the scallops to fly her right back to the carnival.

Dub facts

  • In the Dutch dub, when the guy asks Patrick for the time, Patrick actually tells him the time (3:15 PM) instead of saying, "Patrick needs love, too!"
  • Instead of saying "I defy you Heart man!" Patrick says "I hate you Heartman!" in the German dub and "I challenge you Heart man!" in the Swedish, Latin Spanish, Polish and Dutch dubs. In Italian he says "I never wanna see you again!".
  • In the Latin Spanish dub, Patrick says "Heart on Pole must die!" and "Popsicle Heart must die!"

Errors

File:Valentine's Day 016.png
The sky appears to be pink.
  • When Sandy opens her helmet to receive the chocolate bubble, no water comes inside her helmet, even though they are underwater.
  • When Sandy is on the chocolate balloon, her suit appears smaller.
File:Valentine's Day 018.png
The sky is once again blue.
  • At the beginning, the sky is pink, but after the scene with Plankton, the sky is blue as normal for the rest of the episode.
    • The pink sky could indicate it is early morning or SpongeBob envisioned it.
  • In the original scenes with the "Valentine's Day Carnival" sign, Mount Climb-up-and-Fall-off is not seen, but when Patrick mentions it, it can be seen.
  • An air raid siren can be heard during Patrick's rampage. But, when "House Of Horror" (William Farran) stops playing when Patrick gives up trying to lift the swing ride, the siren also stops blaring. When the music turns back on, so does the siren.
  • When Sandy fights the chocolate-eating scallops, the balloon's basket seems to be missing, only showing the string attached to it. The basket reappears when Sandy arrives at the carnival.
  • The rides at the carnival change place throughout the episode. For example, the Heart-A-Whirl is to the right of the Ferris wheel at the beginning of the episode, but at the end when everyone is on the pier, the rides are still in the position it was at the beginning of the episode, even though the pier is on the other side.
  • When one of the scallops pop a hole in the balloon for the first time, air is coming out, but when Patrick pops it again, chocolate sauce explodes out of it.
    • In the same scene, the hole the scallop pops is on the very top next to Sandy, but when Sandy arrives at the carnival, the patches are slightly away from the top at the front, likely because that patch is not seen given the balloon was never seen from the top down.
File:Valentine's Day 147.png
Incidental 27 without a bottom fin.
  • Incidental 27's bottom fin disappears as Patrick throws him across the carnival.
  • The amount of fish standing behind SpongeBob changes between shots:
    • There were thirteen fish when SpongeBob scolds Patrick for breaking a little girl's lollipop, and one fish is missing when they run to the dock.
    • When cornered against the end of the dock and when everyone is telling Patrick to turn around, it alternates between 12-14 fish.
    • When Patrick sees the chocolate balloon, there were only seven fish.
  • When Patrick says he still refuses to turn around and Sandy calls, SpongeBob blinks and his eyelids freeze for a few frames until Patrick finally turns around.
  • The patches on the chocolate balloon change their positions slightly during wide shots and when Patrick sees it.
