A complete list of renamed episodes in SpongeBob SquarePants. Throughout the series, there have been some instances of episode titles getting renamed before release because either the creators did not like the original title or the original title was deemed inappropriate.

"Help Wanted" - According to a piece of concept art, the title was originally "Sponge Overboard"[1] and "Pilot."[2]
"Reef Blower" - According to concept art, the title was originally "Pilot Extension," referencing the fact that this fills in the rest of the 11 minute runtime that this and "Help Wanted" are combined.[3]
"Tea at the Treedome" - According to a production painting, this episode was originally titled "Tea at the Tree Dome," with the words "Tree" and "Dome" being two different words before being combined into one.[4]
"Bubblestand" - According to Stephen Hillenburg's pitch bible, this episode was originally titled "Bubbles."[5] In the Croatian dub, this episode's title is "Mjehurići," which when translated to English, still uses the original title.
"Jellyfishing" - According to Stephen Hillenburg's pitch bible, the title was supposed to be "Jelly Fishing."[6] This was also going to be called "Squidward's Best Day Ever"[7]
"Plankton!" - According to the audio commentary, this episode was originally going to be titled "Deep Cover."[8]
"Naughty Nautical Neighbors" - This episode was originally titled "Friendly Fire," as seen in some production art.[9]
"Home Sweet Pineapple" - This episode was originally titled "Home." and/or "Home Sweet Home." [10]
"Sandy's Rocket" - According to an Instagram post by Derek Drymon, this episode was based on a short story by Ray Bradbury, and was initially pitched under the title "Space Show" on June 23, 1998, but was then revised under its current title a day later.[13]
"Squeaky Boots" - In some pieces of production art, this episode was originally titled "Squeeky Boots."
"F.U.N." - This episode was originally titled "My Fair Plankton."[14] This original title is a reference to the 1964 musical comedy-drama film My Fair Lady.
"MuscleBob BuffPants" - According to production art, this episode was originally called "Pump It Up."
"Employee of the Month" - Sometimes, YTV accidentally lists this episode as "Chumbucket" instead of its actual name. The Chum Bucket is not even seen or mentioned in this episode.
YTV also sometimes incorrectly says this episode originally aired on March 14, 2014.
Additionally, "Chumbucket" is one word when it should be two.
"SB-129" - This episode was originally titled "SpongeBob 3000" according to pieces of concept art[20] and the old Nickelodeon website[21] or "How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Sponge."[22] The second original title is a reference to the 1964 black comedy film Dr. Strangelove (also known as Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb).
"Bubble Buddy" - This episode was originally titled as "SpongeBob's Bubble Pal" according to old newspaper listings.[44]
"Dying for Pie" - This episode was originally called "Biscuits."[45]
"Imitation Krabs" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Two Krabs Are Better Than One," according to some production art.[46] The reason why it was changed is unknown, but it was most likely because of the title being too long. It was also going to be called "Robot Krabs" and "Will The Real Krabs Please Stand Up."[47]
"Wormy" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Shoo Fly."[48]
"Patty Hype" - This episode was originally titled "Color Patties" and "Color Patty's."
"Life of Crime" - This episode was initially called "Partners in Crime."[49]
"Christmas Who?" - This episode was originally titled "Patchy The Pirate Presents: The SpongeBob SquarePants Christmas Special."[50] This alternate title is used by various cable TV providers and the Nickelodeon website.[51]Amazon Prime Video shortens this title to "The SpongeBob Christmas Special."[52]
"Dumped" - This episode was originally called "Gary's Choice."[54]
"No Free Rides" - This episode was originally called "There's No Such Thing as a Free Lunch, Mrs. Puff,"[55] referencing the phrase "There ain't no such thing as a free lunch," which was first used in the 1938 newspaper article "Economics in Eight Words."[56]
"Shanghaied" - This episode was originally going to be called "SpongeBob's You Wish Spectacular Special" with "You Wish" appearing within the original Patchy segments. The Season 2 DVD box set still keeps this title, and on Sky this episode is called "You Wish (aka Shanghaied)."
"I Had an Accident" - This episode was originally titled "Safety Freak"[86] or "Safety Freak SpongeBob." Some television guides, such as Dish Network, use this title. It is known on Charter and Foxtel as simply "Safety Freak."[citation needed] The Comcast description of the episode calls the episode "Safety Freak (I Had an Accident)." It is unknown why Comcast would put "I Had an Accident" in parentheses in the title.
On old YTV airings of this episode, it was originally listed as its actual title, but, for unknown reasons, the YTV listings changed the title back to "Safety Freak" in 2013.
AT&T U-Verse used to list the original title, but like the YTV example, it was changed to "Safety Freak" in 2019.
"Pranks a Lot" - This episode was originally going to be called "Naked Pants" according to The Seascape Capers DVD episode selection screen and "Ghost Jokers" according to Zap2it.[95]
This title is also seen on Digiturk listings.[citation needed]

"Shell of a Man" - During production, this episode was originally titled "Molting." The case for the screener version of the Fear of a Krabby Patty VHS uses this title. American television broadcasts from 2019 onward also list the title as "Molting" in the on-screen credits.
"Have You Seen This Snail?" - This episode's original titles were "Gary's Great Escape"[97] and "Where's Gary?". The DVD and VHS releases for this episode still refer to it by the second former title.
"Funny Pants" - This episode was originally going to be named "Unfunny Pants," but was later changed to "Laughbox" when Nickelodeon announced the episode.[citation needed]
"That's No Lady" - This episode was originally going to be called "Witness Protection" and "Some Like It Patrick."[104] "Some Like It Patrick" would have been a reference to the film Some Like It Hot, which features a sequence with the two main male characters disguised as women.
"Driven to Tears" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Driving Mr. SquarePants."[49]
"Rule of Dumb" - This episode's alternate titles were "Starfish of Royalty," "Royal Pain," and "King Patrick."[49]
"Born to Be Wild" - This episode was originally going to be called "The Wild Ones."[105]
"Best Frenemies" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Krabs & Plankton Team Up."[49]
"The Pink Purloiner" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Suspicion" and "To Catch a Starfish."
"Squid Wood" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Mini Squid."[49] and "Squidwood," according to the unused title card.
The former name is used in some other countries when translated to English.
"Roller Cowards" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Coaster Cowards."[49]
"Bucket Sweet Bucket" - This episode was originally titled "The Krabby Bucket"[112] and "The Krusty Bucket." The second former title would later be used for a season 12 episode.
"Slimy Dancing" - This episode was originally called "Slimey Dancing."
"BlackJack" - This episode's alternate titles were "SpongeBob's Cousin," "In Search of Ma and Pa Sponge,"[113] and "In Search of Mom and Dad Sponge." The second unused title even had a title card made for it before they decided to change it to the finalized title of "BlackJack."
"Blackened Sponge" - This episode was originally going to be titled "The Black Sponge."
"Mermaid Man vs. SpongeBob" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Mermaidman and Barnacleboy VII: The Heist."[114]
"To Save a Squirrel" - An early script outline lists this episode under various alternate titles: "Survival of the Misfittest," "Spongenapped!," "The Most Dangerous Hobby," "Captured Kidnapped Lost Castaways," and "Welcome to the Errordome."[116]
"Pest of the West" - This episode's alternate titles were "The Pest of the West," "The Good, The Bad, and The Spongey," and "Eternal Fry Cook."[117] "The Pest of the West" title was used on Netflix and Comcast/Xfinity airings.
"Stanley S. SquarePants" - This episode was going to be titled "SpongeBob's Klutzy Cousin."
"Patty Caper" listed as "The Patty Caper" on season 6 on Amazon Prime Video.
"SpongeBob SquarePants vs. The Big One" - This episode's alternate titles were "Endless Summer,"[126] "The Secret of Kahuna Laguna,"[127] and "SpongeBob SquarePants and the Big Wave." Two of these alternate titles are used in several international countries, including Poland, Serbia, all of Central and Eastern Europe, the UK, Taiwan, Latvia, Ukraine, Australia, and Germany.
The Dutch dub uses the name "The Secret of Kahuna Laguna," but still uses the "SpongeBob SquarePants vs. The Big One" title card background.
In Southeast Asia (including Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macao), Turkey, Poland, and all of Central and Eastern Europe, the title card only reads "To SquarePants or Not to" because the original title is considered too long. This also happens on the Amazon Prime Video and Netflix versions.
"Truth or Square" - The original title of this episode was "Stuck in the Freezer," "The Great Escape!," and "10th Anniversary."[141] There is a "Stuck in the Freezer" title card that can be seen in many countries, including Latin America, Spain, and Brazil. The book still uses "The Great Escape" title.
The Dutch dub still uses the former name, but with the "Truth or Square" title card background (on DVD it has the Stuck in the Freezer title card background). Also, "Stuck in the Freezer" is pronounced as "Stuck in the F-F-Freezer." ("Vast in de f-f-vriezer.")
"The Clash of Triton" - This episode was originally titled "Neptune's Party," and a title card for "Neptune's Party" was even made before they decided to change it to "The Clash of Triton." The title card can still be seen in Lithuania, Asia, Germany, France, Poland, Scandinavia, Israel, and all of Central and Eastern Europe.
In Latin America, the episode is sometimes transmitted with that title, although the original is also used.
In the Dutch dub, the episode still uses the original title, but not on the original title card background.
"Tentacle-Vision" - According to production art, the unused title card, and the Nickelodeon USA schedule, this episode was originally going to be titled "Squid TV."[49] The Turkish dub, however, retains the original title.
"I ♥ Dancing" - This episode was originally going to be titled "I Heart a Parade."
"Growth Spout" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Growth Spurt."
"The Inside Job" - This episode was originally going to be called "Inside Job."[142]
"Model Sponge" - The episode's alternate title is "SpongeModel," and was initially called "Sponge Model."[143]
"SpongeBob's Last Stand" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Save Jellyfish Fields."
"The Bad Guy Club for Villains" - This episode was originally going to be titled "The IJLSA vs. the BGATFBC" and an early script outline listed the episode as "Sponge Sprite."[144]
"One Coarse Meal" - This episode was originally titled "Plankton Got Served," and a title card for "Plankton Got Served" was even made before they decided to change it to "One Coarse Meal."[145]
"The Cent of Money" - This episode was originally going to be titled "The Smell of Money."[49]
"Welcome to the Bikini Bottom Triangle" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Welcome to the Bermuda Triangle," as seen on some of the original character models sheets on Facebook.[147]
"The Curse of the Hex" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Hagfish Hex," as seen on some of the original character storyboards on Facebook.[147]
"The Great Patty Caper" - The original name for this episode was "Krabby Patty No More."[148] On YouTubeTV, this episode is referred to as "Mystery with a Twistery."
"Sweet and Sour Squid" - Some cable providers list this episode as "Sweet and Sour Squidward." This is also the name of a DVD.
"Pet Sitter Pat" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Pet Sitter."
"Smoothe Jazz at Bikini Bottom" - This episode was initially called "Smooth Jazz at Rock Bottom." This original title is used on Nickelodeon UK and Ireland's EPG.[152]
"It's a SpongeBob Christmas!" - This episode was originally intended to be called "Don't Be a Jerk (It's Christmas!),"[155] "Plankton's Christmas Wish," and then "Tis The Season to Be Jerky."[156] Two title cards for "Tis The Season to Be Jerky" were even made before they decided to change it to "It's a SpongeBob Christmas!" In Israel, it is still called "Plankton's Christmas Wish," instead of "It's a SpongeBob Christmas!"
"Lost in Bikini Bottom" - This episode was originally titled "The Shortcut."[163] In the French dub, this episode's title is "Le Raccourci," and in the German dub, this episode's title is "Die Abkürzung." When both of these titles are translated to English, they still use the original title.
"Company Picnic" - This episode was originally called "Dueling Picnics."[164]
"Pull Up a Barrel" - This episode was originally going to be titled ""Navy Days" or "Krab & Bull Story."
"Sanctuary!" - This episode was originally called "One Snail Sponge."[165]
"Sold!" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Nick Fishkins: I'll Buy Your Home." Some UK TV listings use this original title.[166]
"Goodbye, Krabby Patty?" - This episode was originally titled "Factory Fresh."[167] The book still uses this title. The episode was also originally called "Goodbye Krusty Krab."[citation needed] This title change was for marketing purposes.[citation needed] The episode is available on the UK streaming service Now TV under its original title, "Factory Fresh."
"Salsa Imbecilicus" - This episode was originally going to be called "Idiot Sauce," but the title was changed because it was deemed that it sounded "too mean."[citation needed]
"The Whole Tooth" - This episode was originally titled "The Tooth, The Whole Tooth, and Nothing but the Tooth."[citation needed] However, the Russian dub still uses this title.
"Lost and Found" - This episode was originally called "Misplaced and Discovered."[173]
"Patrick's Coupon" - This episode was originally titled "Patrick's Coupon Day."[citation needed] This original title is used on Nickelodeon UK and Ireland's EPG.[174]
"Moving Bubble Bass" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Move Your Bubble Bass," but was changed due to containing an innuendo.[citation needed]
"Krusty Kleaners" - This episode's original titles were "Clean Livin'," "The Krusty Cleaners," and "The Krusty Kleaners." Sky, Digiturk, and the Nickelodeon website still uses "Clean Livin'."[177]
"Goons on the Moon" - Numerous TV guides, news sources, YouTube TV, and promos refer to this episode as "SpaceBob MerryPants."
"Bubbletown" - This episode was originally titled "It's Bubbletown."[178] The original title could have also been a reference to the 1974 film Chinatown.
"Who R Zoo?" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Zoo Are You."[183]
"Kwarantined Krab" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Kwarantine Krab"[184] and "The Kwarantined Krab."[185] The only difference is that the word "The" was removed from the finalized title.
"There Will Be Grease" - This episode was originally called "There Will be Grease!" as seen in the script, with a lowercase b. The title was then changed to "There Will Be Grease!," with the only two differences being that the lowercase b was changed to a capital B and the exclamation mark was removed from the finalized title.
"The Big Bad Bubble Bass" - This episode was originally going to be titled "The Three Little Action Figures," and "Big Bad Bubble Bass."[186][187][188][189] Later on, the word "The" was added to the second title.
"Food PBFFT! Truck" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Food PBBFT! Truck." The only difference is that the finalized title replaces the second "B" with an "F."
"Upturn Girls" - This episode was originally titled "City Cetaceans."[190]
"Say Awww!" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Say 'Awww!'" The only difference in the finalized title is the two apostrophes surrounding the "Awww" were removed.[191][192]
"Captain Pipsqueak" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Member's Only."[193]
"Plane to Sea" - This episode may have originally been called "A Plane to See," as seen on Brad Sutton's paintings.[194] Earlier on, it was known as "Seaplane."

"Ride Patrick Ride" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Ride Patrick, Ride!" The only difference is that the comma and the exclamation point were removed.
"FUN-Believable" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Funbelievable." It was changed to be more in line with the name of the in-universe show "FUN-Believable! With Rube" that it is referencing.
"Kreepaway Kamp" - This episode was originally titled "Return to Kamp" and "Kreep Away Kamp."[208] Later on, the spacing between "Kreep" and "Away" was removed.
"Snow Yellow" - This episode was originally titled "Snow Yellow and the Seven Jellies," and a title card for "Snow Yellow and the Seven Jellies" was even made before they decided to change it to "Snow Yellow." The original title card can still be seen on some releases.[209]
"The Dirty Bubble Bass" - This episode was originally titled "Wipe Your Bass," and then "Dirty Bubble Bass," but later on, the word "The" was added to the title.
"Sandy's Country Christmas" - This episode was originally titled "Sandy's Nutty Christmas," "Christmas Goes Nuts," and later, "SpongeBob & Sandy's Country Christmas."[210]

"Pablum Plankton" - This episode was originally titled "Cutie Patootie Plankton."
"Delivery of Doom" - This episode was originally titled "Delivery of Doom!"
"My Father the Boat" - This episode was originally titled "My Father, the Boat."
"Who's Afraid of Mr. Snippers?" - This episode was originally titled "The Play's Not the Thing."[213] The title was at first "Who's Afraid of Mr. Snippers?" to begin with, but the episode was renamed to its original title once more.[214]
"Captain Quasar: The Next Iteration" - This episode was originally called "Captain Quasar: The Next Generation." The original title is still used on YTV airings.
The original titles of this movie were “SpongeBob SquarePants 3”[218][219][220] and “The SpongeBob Movie: It's a Wonderful Sponge“.[221][222] The latter is a reference to the Christmas movie It's a Wonderful Life.
"Hot Pearl-tato" - According to the pitch bible, the episode was originally titled as "Pearl-tato," with the only difference being that the word "Hot" was added.
"The Jelly Life" - This episode was originally titled "A Jelly Life," before "A" was changed to "The."[223]
"The Switch Glitch" - According to the storyboards and this segment's revealing by Cartoonlounge.de, this episode was originally just going to be titled "Switch Glitch," but later on, the word "The" was added to the title.[224][225]
"The Taste of Defeat" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Taste of Defeat," but later on, the word "The" was added to the title.
"Hats Off to Space" - According to two of Brandon Warren's posts on Instagram and the United States Copyright Office, this episode was originally going to be called "Hat's Off to Space," with the only difference being that the apostrophe was removed from the finalized title.[226][227]
"Patrick's Alley" - This episode may have originally been called "Pat's Alley."[228]
"Mid-Season Finale" - This episode was originally going to be titled "The Patrick Show Mid-Season Finale."[229]
"Uncredible Journey" - This episode was originally going to be titled "The Uncredible Journey." The only difference is that the word "The" was removed from the finalized title.[230][231][232]
