A complete list of renamed episodes in SpongeBob SquarePants. Throughout the series, there have been some instances of episode titles getting renamed before release because either the creators did not like the original title or the original title was deemed inappropriate.

Note: Episodes with alternate names on the TV guide listings also count. For an episode list with the official episode titles, see List of episodes.

SpongeBob SquarePants

Season 1

  • "Help Wanted" - According to a piece of concept art, the title was originally "Sponge Overboard"[1] and "Pilot."[2]
  • "Reef Blower" - According to concept art, the title was originally "Pilot Extension," referencing the fact that this fills in the rest of the 11 minute runtime that this and "Help Wanted" are combined.[3]
  • "Tea at the Treedome" - According to a production painting, this episode was originally titled "Tea at the Tree Dome," with the words "Tree" and "Dome" being two different words before being combined into one.[4]
  • "Bubblestand" - According to Stephen Hillenburg's pitch bible, this episode was originally titled "Bubbles."[5] In the Croatian dub, this episode's title is "Mjehurići," which when translated to English, still uses the original title.
  • "Jellyfishing" - According to Stephen Hillenburg's pitch bible, the title was supposed to be "Jelly Fishing."[6] This was also going to be called "Squidward's Best Day Ever"[7]
  • "Plankton!" - According to the audio commentary, this episode was originally going to be titled "Deep Cover."[8]
  • "Naughty Nautical Neighbors" - This episode was originally titled "Friendly Fire," as seen in some production art.[9]
  • "Home Sweet Pineapple" - This episode was originally titled "Home." and/or "Home Sweet Home." [10]
  • "Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy" - This episode was originally titled "The Return of Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy."[11]
  • "Jellyfish Jam" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Jellyfish Jamboree."[12]

    • The original title is used on Paramount+ albeit spelled as "Your Shoe is Untied."
  • "Bossy Boots" - This episode was originally titled "Working Pearl."[42] But The iTunes US store release still keeps this title.
  • "Big Pink Loser" - This episode was originally titled "Single Pink Starfish."[43]

  • "Bubble Buddy" - This episode was originally titled as "SpongeBob's Bubble Pal" according to old newspaper listings.[44]
  • "Dying for Pie" - This episode was originally called "Biscuits."[45]
  • "Imitation Krabs" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Two Krabs Are Better Than One," according to some production art.[46] The reason why it was changed is unknown, but it was most likely because of the title being too long. It was also going to be called "Robot Krabs" and "Will The Real Krabs Please Stand Up."[47]
  • "Wormy" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Shoo Fly."[48]
  • "Patty Hype" - This episode was originally titled "Color Patties" and "Color Patty's."
  • "Prehibernation Week" - This episode was originally called "Sardines."
  • "Life of Crime" - This episode was initially called "Partners in Crime."[49]
  • "Christmas Who?" - This episode was originally titled "Patchy The Pirate Presents: The SpongeBob SquarePants Christmas Special."[50] This alternate title is used by various cable TV providers and the Nickelodeon website.[51] Amazon Prime Video shortens this title to "The SpongeBob Christmas Special."[52]
  • "Survival of the Idiots" - According to the audio commentary, the original title was going to be "Survival of the Morons."[53]
  • "Dumped" - This episode was originally called "Gary's Choice."[54]
  • "No Free Rides" - This episode was originally called "There's No Such Thing as a Free Lunch, Mrs. Puff,"[55] referencing the phrase "There ain't no such thing as a free lunch," which was first used in the 1938 newspaper article "Economics in Eight Words."[56]
  • "I'm Your Biggest Fanatic" - This episode was originally titled "Fanatics."[57]

  • "Party Pooper Pants" - This episode was advertised as "SpongeBob SquarePants House Party," even having a special logo as it's also seen on the DVD.
    • The logo is seen 4 times through the episode.
    • The Dutch dub uses this exact (English) name.
  • "Chocolate with Nuts" - The original name of this episode was "Door to Door"[79] and "The Chocolate Skirmish" from old newspaper listings.[80]
  • "Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy V" - This episode's working title is "Superfriends," as seen in production art, TV listings, the book Crime and Funishment, the Paramount+ streaming release, and certain DVD releases.
  • "Clams" - The original name of this episode was "SpongeJaws,"[81][82][83] a pun of the Jaws movie series.

  • "I Had an Accident" - This episode was originally titled "Safety Freak"[86] or "Safety Freak SpongeBob." Some television guides, such as Dish Network, use this title. It is known on Charter and Foxtel as simply "Safety Freak."[citation needed] The Comcast description of the episode calls the episode "Safety Freak (I Had an Accident)." It is unknown why Comcast would put "I Had an Accident" in parentheses in the title.
    • On old YTV airings of this episode, it was originally listed as its actual title, but, for unknown reasons, the YTV listings changed the title back to "Safety Freak" in 2013.
    • AT&T U-Verse used to list the original title, but like the YTV example, it was changed to "Safety Freak" in 2019.

  • "Shell of a Man" - During production, this episode was originally titled "Molting." The case for the screener version of the Fear of a Krabby Patty VHS uses this title. American television broadcasts from 2019 onward also list the title as "Molting" in the on-screen credits.
  • "Have You Seen This Snail?" - This episode's original titles were "Gary's Great Escape"[97] and "Where's Gary?". The DVD and VHS releases for this episode still refer to it by the second former title.

Season 6

  • "SpongeBob SquarePants vs. The Big One" - This episode's alternate titles were "Endless Summer,"[126] "The Secret of Kahuna Laguna,"[127] and "SpongeBob SquarePants and the Big Wave." Two of these alternate titles are used in several international countries, including Poland, Serbia, all of Central and Eastern Europe, the UK, Taiwan, Latvia, Ukraine, Australia, and Germany.
    • The Dutch dub uses the name "The Secret of Kahuna Laguna," but still uses the "SpongeBob SquarePants vs. The Big One" title card background.

  • "Truth or Square" - The original title of this episode was "Stuck in the Freezer," "The Great Escape!," and "10th Anniversary."[141] There is a "Stuck in the Freezer" title card that can be seen in many countries, including Latin America, Spain, and Brazil. The book still uses "The Great Escape" title.
    • The Dutch dub still uses the former name, but with the "Truth or Square" title card background (on DVD it has the Stuck in the Freezer title card background). Also, "Stuck in the Freezer" is pronounced as "Stuck in the F-F-Freezer." ("Vast in de f-f-vriezer.")

  • "The Clash of Triton" - This episode was originally titled "Neptune's Party," and a title card for "Neptune's Party" was even made before they decided to change it to "The Clash of Triton."     • In Latin America, the episode is sometimes transmitted with that title, although the original is also used.
    • In the Dutch dub, the episode still uses the original title, but not on the original title card background.

  • "It's a SpongeBob Christmas!" - This episode was originally intended to be called "Don't Be a Jerk (It's Christmas!),"[155] "Plankton's Christmas Wish," and then "Tis The Season to Be Jerky."[156] Two title cards for "Tis The Season to Be Jerky" were even made before they decided to change it to "It's a SpongeBob Christmas!" In Israel, it is still called "Plankton's Christmas Wish," instead of "It's a SpongeBob Christmas!"
  • "Hello Bikini Bottom!" - This episode was originally going to be titled "SpongeBob on Tour."[157] The SpongeBob on Tour DVD release still refers to it by this title.


Season 9

  • "Little Yellow Book" - This episode was originally going to be titled "SpongeBob's Diary."

  • "Lost in Bikini Bottom" - This episode was originally titled "The Shortcut."[163] In the French dub, this episode's title is "Le Raccourci," and in the German dub, this episode's title is "Die Abkürzung." When both of these titles are translated to English, they still use the original title.
  • "Company Picnic" - This episode was originally called "Dueling Picnics."[164]
  • "Pull Up a Barrel" - This episode was originally going to be titled ""Navy Days" or "Krab & Bull Story."
  • "Sanctuary!" - This episode was originally called "One Snail Sponge."[165]
  • "Sold!" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Nick Fishkins: I'll Buy Your Home." Some UK TV listings use this original title.[166]

  • "Goodbye, Krabby Patty?" - This episode was originally titled "Factory Fresh."[167] The book still uses this title. The episode was also originally called "Goodbye Krusty Krab."[citation needed] This title change was for marketing purposes.[citation needed] The episode is available on the UK streaming service Now TV under its original title, "Factory Fresh."
  • "Salsa Imbecilicus" - This episode was originally going to be called "Idiot Sauce," but the title was changed because it was deemed that it sounded "too mean."[citation needed]
  • "The Whole Tooth" - This episode was originally titled "The Tooth, The Whole Tooth, and Nothing but the Tooth."[citation needed] However, the Russian dub still uses this title.

  • "Goons on the Moon" - Numerous TV guides, news sources, YouTube TV, and promos refer to this episode as "SpaceBob MerryPants."
  • "Bubbletown" - This episode was originally titled "It's Bubbletown."[178] The original title could have also been a reference to the 1974 film Chinatown.

  • "There Will Be Grease" - This episode was originally called "There Will be Grease!" as seen in the script, with a lowercase b. The title was then changed to "There Will Be Grease!," with the only two differences being that the lowercase b was changed to a capital B and the exclamation mark was removed from the finalized title.

  • "The Big Bad Bubble Bass" - This episode was originally going to be titled "The Three Little Action Figures," and "Big Bad Bubble Bass."[186][187][188][189] Later on, the word "The" was added to the second title.
  • "Food PBFFT! Truck" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Food PBBFT! Truck." The only difference is that the finalized title replaces the second "B" with an "F."
  • "Upturn Girls" - This episode was originally titled "City Cetaceans."[190]
  • "Say Awww!" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Say 'Awww!'" The only difference in the finalized title is the two apostrophes surrounding the "Awww" were removed.[191][192]
  • "Captain Pipsqueak" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Member's Only."[193]

  • "Plane to Sea" - This episode may have originally been called "A Plane to See," as seen on Brad Sutton's paintings.[194] Earlier on, it was known as "Seaplane."
