"Truth or Square" is a SpongeBob SquarePants episode from season 6. In this episode, during a Krusty Krab anniversary celebration, SpongeBob, Patrick, Squidward, and Mr. Krabs are accidentally locked in the freezer.

Synopsis

Act 1

Patchy the Pirate is holding a TV Extravaganza and is waiting for SpongeBob to show up to it, but with no reply, he thinks back to all of the time that has passed without SpongeBob giving him a reply. He then sets out to find SpongeBob, and rides his boat to Bikini Atoll.

The animated section of the episode then begins with SpongeBob waking up in the morning with the help of many alarm clocks lined up to the foghorn clock, only to blow out more clocks, thus waking him up. He then reveals that it is the eleventy-seventh year anniversary since Mr. Krabs officially opened the Krusty Krab. He remembers the first time he ever visited the restaurant, and he apparently loved it, even though he was not born yet when he first went there. SpongeBob gets ready for the anniversary celebration in various wacky ways, as the song "A Day Like This" is heard during so. After he finishes, he rushes all the way to the Krusty Krab when he bumps into the customers waiting in line to get into the restaurant, and he knows that he cannot be late for this, so he jumps over the crowd's heads.

As the act ends, SpongeBob arrives at the Krusty Krab where Mr. Krabs reminds them to keep a close eye on all of the doors, and entrances, including the air vents, to make sure that Plankton does not sneak in during the eleventy-seventh year anniversary celebration. Meanwhile, at the Chum Bucket, Plankton spoke with his computer wife, Karen, about how he has been a failure for 50 years of business, while Mr. Krabs has been nothing but successful. In order to redeem himself and finally get his hands on the Krabby Patty secret formula, Plankton decides that he'll sneak into the Krusty Krab while the employees and Mr. Krabs are distracted by the festivities, and steal the formula.

Act 2

Back at the live action segments, after Patchy ran off, P!nk and many other celebrities are sat down waiting around for their turn to perform in the extravaganza as promised. P!nk and her band decided it would be a good idea to practice their performance while they wait. They then begin to play the song titled "We've Got Scurvy" to open Act 2.

Returning to Bikini Bottom, Mr. Krabs decides to put SpongeBob in charge of decorating the Krusty Krab. Squidward reminds Mr. Krabs what had happened the other time SpongeBob got to decorate (which then cuts to a flashback of SpongeBob's former decorating failure), but this time he was going to use the resources that he already had in the restaurant including napkins, ketchup, mustard, and inflatable Krabby Patties as balloons. Meanwhile, Patrick had been hired by Mr. Krabs as security. They then went to the freezer to see the ice sculpture SpongeBob had made for the Krabby Patty. After entering the freezer, the door accidentally gets locked behind them, thus trapping them. The four of them decide to bust into the air ducts in an effort to escape.

While in the air ducts, Mr. Krabs finds a wrapper from an older Patty. Mr. Krabs then had a flashback of an old black and white Krusty Krab commercial. SpongeBob and the gang then go into the Krusty Krab surveillance room. On many monitors, they see that SpongeBob, Patrick, and Squidward's houses were on camera. Mr. Krabs acts as though he doesn't know why there are hidden cameras, although it is heavily referred that he is responsible for them. At that very moment, it's revealed that there are two men recording them from behind as they appear on one of the monitors. Mr. Krabs then suggests that they split up to find a way out. Mr. Krabs goes it alone while the other three stick together. Ultimately they just end up all together again a few moments later. Meanwhile, Plankton had reached the Krusty Krab and was searching through the air ducts to find a way to the formula, but he was having no such luck. Plankton eventually falls right into the duct the gang is in as Act 2 ends there.

Act 3

Act 3 starts off back on the surface, where Patchy sails through the sewers and on to the ocean. After sailing for a while he almost makes it to Bikini Bottom but is stopped short and eaten by a whale.

Back with the gang, SpongeBob remembers the time that Mr. Krabs had first told him the formula. Plankton leans in, in an attempt to find out what the formula is but the Mr. Krabs in the flashback grabs Plankton and throws him down an air duct. After moving further through the air ducts, Squidward remembers the days before SpongeBob lived in Bikini Bottom, but SpongeBob interrupts him to remind him how great it was when he first moved in. Mr. Krabs' wallet then begins going crazy over all of the loose change he isn't earning from the customers waiting in line outside, so Mr. Krabs lets the wallet go so it can get to the money, only to be picked up by an unsuspecting man. Patrick then pulls out a radio transmitter he had taken from Sandy. They then attempt to call Sandy and have her come rescue them but Patrick destroys the transmitter after he thinks that Sandy is trapped inside it. As SpongeBob then remembers the time that he and Sandy got married through a flashback, only for it to be revealed that the whole thing was just a play.

Act 4

Act 4 opens up by showing Patchy, now stuck in the belly of a whale, where he plays some supposed scenes of SpongeBob before it had first aired, including the Squidward, Patrick, and Mr. Krabs theme songs. His camera suddenly goes haywire which results in the whale sneezing him out, and launching him right back into the studio. He is knocked unconscious and starts dreaming that he is in Bikini Bottom by SpongeBob's Pineapple where he meets the titular sponge himself. He was then knocked out again, this time in his dream. He then wakes up to see the celebrities in the studio who tell him he can see SpongeBob everywhere, and they proceed to knock him unconscious once again (but in a rather fascinated way).

Returning to the gang, at this point, SpongeBob had decided to use all of the gang as a battering ram to break through the air duct. After several tries the gang bust through only to discover that all of the customers were gone due to them waiting too long without getting any food. Mr. Krabs becomes heartbroken and believes the anniversary to be ruined, however, SpongeBob begins to sing the Krusty Krab song, "Oh, Krusty Krab," which brings all of the customers back as they form a circle and start singing with SpongeBob. The Krusty Krab then returns to business and the celebration is ready to begin.

Mr. Krabs also goes after the customer who had taken his wallet. Meanwhile, Plankton, on the other hand, was discovered by Mr. Krabs and was blown into a balloon after he pleads with him not to launch him. Mr. Krabs then holds the door open for a customer who turns out to be the same one who took his wallet. He then chases after the person after realizing this. SpongeBob wishes the restaurant a happy eleventy-seventh anniversary to finish off the special.

There are three versions of this episode:

  • Version 1: The original American airing of this episode, with a runtime of 51 minutes, excluding commercials. It is the version found on all digital and streaming releases on Amazon Prime Video,[11] Paramount+,[12] and iTunes.[13] This version was also released on The Pilot a Mini-Movie and the Square Shorts DVD. This version used to be available for streaming on Netflix, but was later switched to version 2. This version also has an exclusive closeup shot of the former foot logo on the Nickelodeon Animation Studio.
  • Version 2: An alternate version of this episode, with a runtime of 44 minutes. It is the version that is currently broadcast by Nickelodeon USA (and rarely on Nicktoons USA), was dubbed in every country and is often shown in two parts outside of the USA. This version removes the Patchy scenes at the beginning, as well as Ricky Gervais' intro and epilogue (this version ends with the final zoom out of the Krusty Krab), and the celebrity cameos by Rosario Dawson, LeBron James, Tina Fey, Will Ferrell, Craig Ferguson, and Robin Williams. This version starts with the extravaganza portion, and there are various lines that version 1 does not have. This version was released on the North American/Region 1 Bikini Bottom Bash and SpongeBob SquarePants Triple Pack DVDs. In some reruns, the credits are shown at the ending, along with the normal logo combo at the bottom-right corner.
  • Version 3: The extended version of the episode, with a runtime of 59 minutes. It is the version that was released on the North American/Region 1 versions of the DVD based on this episode, Season 6 Volume 1, Triple Pack 1, The Complete Sixth Season, Big Hits: Volume 1, The Next 100 Episodes, The Best 200 Episodes Ever, The Fifth & Sixth Seasons, and The Best 300 Episodes Ever DVDs. It is a combination of versions 1 and 2, and it also contains extended material that is not found in either version. The extended version includes a cameo by Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, a short cameo by Eddie Deezen, a scene with Robin Williams in the bathroom, and an extended epilogue, where the narrator compares Patchy to Blackbeard the Pirate.

  • This episode celebrates the 10th anniversary of SpongeBob SquarePants; however, this episode aired on November 6, four months after the series' officially-recognized debut date of July 17, 1999, when "Bubblestand" and "Ripped Pants" premiered. Nickelodeon counts July 17 as the series' premiere rather than May 1, when the pilot episode was previewed.
    • This is also the first episode to serve as an anniversary special.
  • This episode went through many name changes: "Anniversary Special,"[1] "10th Anniversary," "The Great Escape," "Stuck in the Freezer," and finally, "Truth or Square."
  • Revealed by an April 2008 episode schedule found on the back of a sketch on Kenny Pittenger's blog, this episode was originally a half-hour special that had the production codes of 193-642 and 193-643. At some point down the line, likely during the middle of 2008, this episode was extended to be an hour long. The episode's production slots were moved to be #645 through #648. Two other 11-minute episodes, "Sand Castles in the Sand" and "Chum Bucket Supreme" were moved to #642 and #643 respectively. An all new episode, "Chum Caverns," took up slot #644.[1]

  • The fake "old" clip of SpongeBob is based on vintage black-and-white cartoons, particularly Disney cartoons from the early 1930s.
  • The name of the song "Rubber Hose Rag" is a reference to rubber hose animation from the 1920s and 1930s.
  • The "Oh, Krusty Krab" song is a parody of the old folk tune "Lauriger Horatius" that was later used in Christmas song "O Tannenbaum," which is more commonly known as "Oh Christmas Tree."
  • The end credits song "Beautiful Dreamer" is a cover of the second part of "Beautiful Dreamer" by Stephen Foster.
  • The Queen resembles the late Queen Elizabeth II of England.
  • The Fancy Studios lot is actually part of the Warner Bros. studio lot, also located in Burbank, California.
    • This may be ironic since Warner Bros. and Paramount have historically been rival companies, as well as Disney.

  • Although a widescreen/high definition print for this episode exists (as evidenced by broadcasts on Nickelodeon HD and online streaming services like Paramount+), Nicktoons USA airings and the Bikini Bottom Bash DVD release of this episode are shown letterboxed full screen with black bars embedded onto the left and right sides of the screen.
    • It is worth mentioning that a similar error occurs whenever Nicktoons USA and Nickelodeon Canada airs the 3-part special The Fairly OddParents: "Wishology!" which premiered in the same year as "Truth or Square." Unlike "Truth or Square," The Fairly OddParents: "Wishology" prints on Nicktoons USA and Nickelodeon Canada are in letterboxed full screen 480p quality.
  • At the beginning, when SpongeBob leaves his house after singing, he bumps into Harold, who is in a line going all the way to the Krusty Krab. SpongeBob declares he cannot be late and jumps on the fishes' heads. The male fish have female voices and the female fish have male voices.
  • Mr. Krabs says there is a network of tunnels below the Krusty Krab, yet they end up locked in the freezer and use air vents to escape.

  • When SpongeBob says, "Are you okay?" in Patchy's dream, the right side of his pants is transparent.
  • When Sandy is in her wedding dress, the patch of tan fur on her torso does not extend to above her chest, as it normally does.
  • When Plankton falls down an air duct and lands in the one that SpongeBob, Patrick, Mr. Krabs, and Squidward are in their last scene in the duct system, that duct is underground, but later in the episode, when Mr. Krabs throws his wallet out through the peephole, and when they escape, the duct is above the ground.
  • When SpongeBob's house comes to life in the 30s-style segment, the chimney disappears.
  • When Patchy is shaking around in the whale, his hand gets slightly cut off.
  • When Squidward points out that Patrick left his TV on, the latter's mouth is red for a couple of seconds. When he replies to Squidward with "Well, duh! I don't wanna miss my shows," his mouth is black again.
  • During the wedding play, when Sandy walks by an anchovy, said anchovy's eyes are gone.
  • When SpongeBob gets to lead Patrick and Squidward down the air vent, in the zoom-in he wears sock guarders. When it pops out of the zoom, they are gone.
  • The alarm clocks towards the beginning says that it is 5:00 P.M.
  • At one point, Mr. Krabs and the rest split up, but after SpongeBob tells Plankton about the first time Krabs told him the Krabby Patty secret formula, Mr. Krabs appears out of nowhere.
  • Also, before Mr. Krabs appears, the gang appears to be sitting in the middle of a hallway in the duct. But once Mr. Krabs appears and is seen flinging Plankton into another air duct, the hallway behind them becomes a closed off wall.
  • In the surveillance room, what is on the TV's changes from shot to shot.
    • The size of the TVs also changes, as well as what tubes are connected to what TVs.
  • When SpongeBob, Patrick, Squidward, and Mr. Krabs enter the surveillance room, there is a chair, but when they look at the TV with them on it and also when they look at the cameramen, the chair is gone.
  • In some airings, "P!nk" is spelled as "Pink," without the exclamation point.
  • At the beginning when Patchy is outside of Nickelodeon Studios, because of the wind, his beard is seen beginning to peel off.
  • If the audio is slowed down, it is noticed that the shot heard before SpongeBob hops on the fishes' heads to get to his work goes off before he finishes talking.
  • When SpongeBob, Mr. Krabs, Patrick, and Squidward enter the surveillance room, the order is Mr. Krabs, SpongeBob, Patrick, and Squidward. However, in the scene prior it is Mr. Krabs, SpongeBob, Squidward, and Patrick.
  • In the surveillance room, SpongeBob, Mr. Krabs, Patrick, and Squidward are looking at themselves, looking at themselves. However, the pattern only stops with a screen inside a screen. The screen inside, the screen inside the screen shows nothing.
  • When Robin Williams says that he is alright after Patchy checks on him for the second time, he calls him "Patchy," not "Pagey."
  • When Patchy yells "What?! What do you mean he is not coming!," his hook is on his left hand, but when he leaves the studio, it is on his right hand.
  • When SpongeBob bounces on two female fish, they have male voices.
    • When SpongeBob bounces on Fred, he has a female voice.
  • In the newer Belgian airings, the first part of the episode is aired in the 2:1 aspect ratio instead of being at 16:9.
  • In the French dub, the Krusty Krab is celebrating its 1107th anniversary instead of 117th.
  • In the Filipino dub, the Krusty Krab is celebrating its 107th anniversary instead of 117th.
    • But still, the designs SpongeBob made says "eleventy-seventh" or 117th.
  • In the European Spanish version, the Krusty Krab celebrates its 711th anniversary instead.
  • In the German dub, during the montage of Squidward sleeping at work, his snoring isn't dubbed. It's noticeable when Rodger Bumpass' higher sound is compared with Eberhard Prüter's lower and rumblier one.
  • During the transition from the starting credits to the episode, the wipe is from left to right instead of down to up.
  • In the flashback of the time SpongeBob first visited the Krusty Krab, SpongeBob's mother is pregnant with SpongeBob, but in "Your Shoe's Untied," SpongeBob is shown to have been in an egg before he was born.
  • When SpongeBob sings "Oh Krusty Krab," the path to the Chum Bucket is there, but in the scene at the end, it is not there anymore.
  • On the November 2, 2018 airing, it had split screen credits, and the credits are from "Help Wanted"/"Reef Blower"/"Tea at the Treedome."[23]
  • Some of the international versions of the DVD containing this episode claim to use the extended 59 minute version of the aforementioned episode even though those releases actually use the shortened 44 minute version due to that being the version that was dubbed in every country.
  • In later prints, such as prints on Paramount+, the end credits display Vicacom instead of Viacom.
