SpongeBob SquarePants has aired in over 170 countries. Airings of episodes in other countries outside the series' native home of the United States occasionally cut out or edit scenes, sometimes due to different cultural standards (especially in countries where rude/sexually suggestive humor, dangerous, imitable behavior, comic nudity, and insulting language are often seen as inappropriate for children) or to give more time for commercial breaks, though there have been cases of the U.S. editing the show in reruns due to complaints about content. This is a list of scenes edited internationally.

Many edits in the UK and Ireland in particular involve editing rapid flashing that could potentially cause seizures, and scenes involving imitable violence, such as with hot grills and broken glass.

Note: Those edits are not present in home media or streaming prints unless stated otherwise.

SpongeBob SquarePants

Season 1

  • "Help Wanted"
    • The moment when SpongeBob is about to jump out of his underwear was cut on GTV in Indonesia, likely for nudity.
    • The scene where SpongeBob serves up Krabby Patties to the angry anchovies while Tiny Tim sings "Livin' in the Sunlight, Lovin' in the Moonlight" was cut in Italy for unknown reasons. Most likely for copyright reasons.[1]
  • "Ripped Pants"
    • In some early Italian airings, the episode would end when the concert was just beginning.[2]
    • In some countries, SpongeBob's ripped pants are not shown. In the Hindi dub, all instances of SpongeBob's ripped pants are blurred for nudity.[3]
  • "Jellyfishing"
    • In the UK and Ireland, the explosion after Squidward falls off his bike was edited to slow down the flashing lights.[4]
    • In early Polish airings, the scene where Patrick jams the net through Squidward's bandaged hand was cut. In the later airings, the scene was restored for unknown reasons.[5]
    • In Korea (only on EBS airings), the ending scene where Squidward gets stung by the queen jellyfish was cut, likely due to violence.[6]
  • "Plankton!" - The scene when Plankton says, "Come back here, you swine!" is sometimes cut because the word 'swine' is offensive in some countries.[citation needed]
  • "Naughty Nautical Neighbors" - In early Polish airings, the scene where Squidward chokes on the fork is cut. In the later airings, the scene was restored for unknown reasons.
  • "Pizza Delivery" - At the end of this episode, Squidward's line "Oh, my aching tentacles!" was cut in some countries due to the line being said at an inappropriate timing (causing the screen to go black when the line is said). It is also cut on the Nicktoons Collection Volume 1 Game Boy Advance Video cartridge and current Nickelodeon USA/Nick@Nite airings. It is still left intact on Nicktoons USA airings, DVD releases, digital releases, and streaming services. Sometime in 2013, it was deleted from Greek, Polish, and Chinese airings, along with airings on some free-to-air channels in Latin America. In Italian and Korean EBS airings, instead cutting to black, it still cuts to SpongeBob and Squidward arriving at the Krusty Krab with the rock, then it fades to black. The ending was originally cut in the UK and Ireland airings, but has since been reinstated.[7]
  • "Pickles" - In recent British and Irish airings, in the scene where SpongeBob is hammering a toast to his countertop using a nail and Mr. Krabs tells him that he needs to get his confidence back, the screen is zoomed in so that the toast being hammered in cannot be seen.[8]
  • "Hall Monitor" - In some countries, the jail door slamming at the end is cut, due to the screen going black as this happens.
  • "Jellyfish Jam" - In early Polish airings, the scene where SpongeBob does the jellyfish dance was cut. This was likely done to prevent epileptic or photosensitive viewers from suffering seizures due to the quick flashing lights and stroboscopic effects. In the later airings, the scene was restored for unknown reasons. In early UK and Ireland airings, the flashing morphing shots were replaced with a shot of the sound speaker,[9] but in recent UK and Ireland airings, the flashing morphing shots are shown but some frames are removed and the shots are slowed down for the same reason.[10][11]
  • "Squeaky Boots" - In recent UK and Ireland airings, the scene where a sad SpongeBob has his face pressed down right on top of the hot grill after he fears he lost the boots is cut due to the dangerous action of this scene.[12]
  • "Culture Shock" - The Albanian dub cuts Squidward saying "You bottom feeders! You don't even know talent!," likely for offensive behavior.
  • "F.U.N." - On GTV Indonesia airings, the scene where SpongeBob and Plankton sing the F.U.N. Song was cut due to time constraints.[13]
  • "MuscleBob BuffPants" - In the UK and Ireland, the scene where SpongeBob's Anchor Arms explode was edited to slow down the fast motion.[14]
  • "Employee of the Month" - In British and Irish airings, the scene where the Krusty Krab explodes is slowed down to frames. This is likely done to prevent epileptic or photosensitive viewers from suffering seizures.[15]
  • "Scaredy Pants" - In the UK and Ireland, the scene depicting Patrick cutting chunks of SpongeBob's head is removed, although it was left intact on the UK and Irish DVD releases.[16] This has been reinstated as of 2019. In reprints, the shot of the Krusty Krab before the Flying Dutchman enters is darkened, and the lightning flashes are slowed down, with some frames removed.[17]
  • "SB-129" - In the UK and Ireland, the scene where the Time Machine malfunctions was edited to slow down one instance of flashing lights. In reprints, this is shortened instead of slowed down.[18]
File:Suds 165.png
  • "Suds" - In Italian and GTV Indonesia airings, both the Sponge Treatment scene and the entire final scene were cut, most likely due to nudity, ending the episode on SpongeBob saying, "I love the doctor!"[19]
  • "Valentine's Day" - On GTV in Indonesia, most of the opening of the episode is cut.
  • "The Paper" - In early British and Irish airings, the flipbook scene was cut. This was later reinstated, but the flipbook scene was slowed down to prevent any possible seizures.[20]
  • "Arrgh!" - In the UK and Ireland, the scenes with the Flying Dutchman were edited so that the flashing lights were slower and less frequent.[21]
  • "Walking Small" - In the remastered print of this episode on digital and streaming releases, the scene where SpongeBob gets a tan is different; his skin tone is orange instead of brown.[22][23][24][25] The original brown colored SpongeBob remains intact on the SpongeGuard on Duty VHS tape release, DVD releases, and international non-US airings of this episode.
  • "Neptune's Spatula"
    • In the UK and Ireland, many scenes of flashing lights throughout the episode were edited to reduce the flashes:
      • Both scenes of King Neptune zapping Patrick: firstly after he insisted that SpongeBob would become the new Royal Fry Cook, and secondly after he says that SpongeBob can take on any challenge.
      • As King Neptune summons the clouds.
      • When Neptune, SpongeBob and Patrick enter Atlantis.
      • When Neptune and SpongeBob shake hands.
      • Both instances of Neptune zapping the patties (firstly during the competition, secondly when at the Krusty Krab).[26]
    • In Italian and Azerbaijani airings, the scene where Neptune opens the cloud to accidentally show Tom Kenny in the shower is cut.[27]
  • "Hooky" - In the early Polish, Norwegian, and recent Indonesian airings, the scene where Patrick eats the cheese off the hook and has all hooks in his mouth was cut due to reckless behavior. In the later airings, the scene was restored for unknown reasons. In the UK and Ireland, the scene where Patrick eats the first bit of cheese is left in, but the scene where he has all the hooks in his mouth is cut.[28] Despite this, in the UK and Ireland airings of "The Patrick Star Fan Favorites Special," the full scene of Patrick with all the hooks in his mouth is left intact.[29]

Season 2

  • "Your Shoe's Untied"
    • The scene where SpongeBob is watching a sea anemone "dancing" on his TV was removed in the Filipino and Sun Studio Norwegian dubs.
    • In the UK and Ireland, the flashing lights as the Flying Dutchman enters are slowed down.[30]
  • "Something Smells" - In recent British and Irish airings, the scene when SpongeBob chops up the onions is cut, due to him chopping them straight onto his hand as this is quite dangerous.[31]
  • "Dying for Pie" - On some Canadian TV airings, the title card was mistakenly removed.
  • "Wormy"
    • The "That's What Friends Do" song was cut on GTV in Indonesia and in Italy and just cuts to the last scene of the song where SpongeBob and Patrick are lying on the grass.[32]
    • Allegedly, this episode, along with its sister episode, was banned in some countries due to Wormy's face being a cleg fly close-up frightening young viewers.[33]
  • "Christmas Who?" - In the UK and Ireland, the scene where the gray cloud rains on SpongeBob was edited to slightly slow down the lightning flash.[34]
  • "I'm Your Biggest Fanatic" - In the UK and Ireland, all scenes of numerous jellyfish stinging Kevin's eyes were edited to slow down the flashing lights, and so was a scene where an anchovy gets zapped after having been sent out of the cave to find the king jellyfish.[35]
  • "Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy III" - In the UK and Ireland, two scenes were edited: firstly, the flashing lights on Man Ray's tickle belt were slowed down as it malfunctions after SpongeBob and Patrick break its controller, and secondly, the scene where Man Ray zaps SpongeBob and Patrick were darkened after SpongeBob says that good people have no use for weapons.[36]
  • "Squirrel Jokes" - In the Indonesian dub, any usage of the word "stupid" is instead translated as "ugly" and any usage of the word "stupidity" is translated as "ugliness."
  • "Shanghaied"
    • Aside from an accidental airing on October 27, 2003,[37][38] this episode was originally omitted from airing on Nickelodeon in the UK and Ireland for unknown reasons.[39] By March 19, 2009, the episode was airing in regular rotation.[40]
    • In recent airings in the UK and Ireland, the flashing lights when the Flying Dutchman first appears on his ship are edited to remove one flash, and the flashing lights before he scares a woman by showing flames in his mouth are slowed down.[41]
  • "Gary Takes a Bath"
    • This episode was originally omitted from airing on Nickelodeon in the UK and Ireland for unknown reasons.[39] By March 19, 2009, the episode was airing in regular rotation.[40]
    • In recent airings in the UK and Ireland and Paramount+, the scenes where SpongeBob has a bomb strapped to his chest and his line "Don't drop 'em..." were cut, along with SpongeBob dropping soap to the ground.[42]
      • However, in the TV airings, SpongeBob does drop the soap but the line is muted when he drops it and the line is then cut, which results with him dropping the soap and a dropping sound, and when SpongeBob drops the soap, it skips to the last frame of him dropping the soap before saying "Look at this broach!"[43]
    • On the Nicktoons TV Favourites Volume 2 UK DVD, the scene where SpongeBob has a bomb strapped to his chest is removed.[44]
  • "Welcome to the Chum Bucket" - In early Italian airings, the song "This Grill Is Not a Home" was cut, presumably due to commercial constraints.
  • "Frankendoodle" - On GTV in Indonesia, the wrench that DoodleBob draws lands in Patrick's lap instead of his head, and when DoodleBob throws the ball to Patrick, it cuts to Patrick one second after the strike.
  • "Band Geeks"
    • In the UK and Ireland, three scenes were edited: firstly, the explosion after the flag twirlers crash into the blimp was edited slightly to slow down the flashing lights, and two parts of "Sweet Victory" were edited to slow down flashing stadium lights.[45]
    • In the Italian dub, "Sweet Victory" is cut, likely due to commercial constraints, as the dub was commissioned for a commercial broadcaster (Italia 1).[46] In the PSiM Persian dub, only SpongeBob's singing parts were cut, likely because the song was in English.
  • "Graveyard Shift" - In the UK and Ireland, the scene where the lights are being flickered by Nosferatu was edited so that they aren't as fast and they tend to fade slower.[citation needed]
  • "Procrastination" - In the UK and Ireland, the scene SpongeBob keeps moving his chair back left and right has frames removed in order to prevent seizures in photosensitive epileptic viewers.[47]
  • "Jellyfish Hunter" - In the UK and Ireland, the scene where the blue jellyfish cuts the power in SpongeBob's house is replaced with a shot of SpongeBob's door. This has since been reinstated in 2022, but the scene where Mr. Krabs is zapped by the jellyfish is edited to slow down the flashing lights.[48] Also, in Italy, Fred's song is cut.
  • "The Fry Cook Games" - In some countries (including Iran), the scene where SpongeBob and Patrick hold hands as they leave the wrestling arena is cut (cropped in the PSiM Persian dub's case), presumably due to the scene being insinuated as promoting homosexual behavior.

Season 3

File:Just One Bite 160l.png
File:Just One Bite 160m.png
  • "Just One Bite" - A deleted scene featuring Squidward activating a gasoline trap in the Krusty Krab has been retained in only Canadian, South Korean, Serbian, and Bulgarian airings, but is removed in all other countries and regions, including the United States reruns as of January 2, 2002.[50][51]
  • "Nasty Patty" - In the UK and Ireland, the scene where the health inspector comes up with a red head after getting hit on the head with an anchor by the male police officer, and then being hit on the head with a barrel by the female police officer after SpongeBob confuses him for a zombie, was cut due to violence.[52]
  • "Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy IV" - In the UK and Ireland, the scene where SpongeBob is walking down the street and shrinking everybody he passes by has the light flashes edited as to prevent seizures in photosensitive epileptic viewers. This has since been reinstated in 2022.[citation needed] In reprints, the scene where SpongeBob shrinks the city, accompanied by a flashing light, is darkened and slowed down.[53]
  • "Doing Time" - SpongeBob and Patrick being smashed while disguised as rocks has been cut in the UK and Ireland.[54] This has since been reinstated in 2022. In recent airings in the UK and Ireland, the scene of the police officers straightening up parking meters with the implication at first that they were beating someone up with their bats was cut due to implied violence.[55]
  • "One Krabs Trash"
    • In the UK and Ireland, the scene of lightning flashes before Smitty Werbenjägermanjensen enters was edited to slow them down.[56]
    • In some CITV airings in the UK, the scene where Mr. Krabs opens the coffin and takes the hat off Smitty was removed.[citation needed]
  • "Can You Spare a Dime?" - In recent British and Irish airings, the scene where SpongeBob breaks the glass of lemonade with his hand was cut.[57]
  • "Party Pooper Pants"
    • In Italy, "Underwater Sun" is cut.
    • On the European version of The Complete 3rd Season DVD, the episode cuts from the shot of the Barg'N-Mart straight to the "PLEASE STAND BY" card. The scenes with SpongeBob buying the party kit from the Barg'N-Mart, planning the party with Gary, and the Patchy segment are all absent. This does not happen on the European version of the Tales from the Deep DVD.
  • "Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy V" -
    • In the UK and Ireland, two scenes were edited: firstly, the intro for "The New Adventures of Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy" was slowed down and edited to darken the screen, and secondly, the comic-like effect saying "KA-BRAN!" was edited to slow down the flashing lights.[58]
    • In the Japanese dub, The International Justice League of Super Acquaintances' introductory sequence removes the narrator's line "A subsiduary of Viacom", due to article 83 of the NHK Act prohibiting advertising of specific companies during TV programming.
  • "Ugh"
    • In the UK and Ireland, three scenes were edited: firstly, the flashing lights were slowed down as Patchy's present-day house changes to a prehistoric-looking house (this resulted in an error, a white flash is shown in the 16:9 ratio instead of 4:3 like the rest of the episode), secondly, the flashing images were slowed down in the sequence where SpongeGar stares at the stick, and thirdly, the scene where Squog gets struck by lighting was edited to slow down lightning flashes.[59]
    • In Italy, most of "When Worlds Collide" is cut.
File:Mid-Life Crustacean 183.png
  • "Mid-Life Crustacean" - On YOYOTV in Taiwan, the panty raid scene and ending are cut due to being inappropriate.[60]
    • This episode has also been banned in some countries as of August 14, 2018[61] due to the panty raid scene not being considered appropriate for children.[62] Despite being banned in the US, this episode and its sister episode, "The Great Snail Race," are still unbanned in several other countries. Likewise, a few clips from this episode are still shown in videos on the SpongeBob SquarePants Official YouTube channel.
    • In the UK and Ireland, the scene showing SpongeBob, Patrick, and Mr. Krabs watching a washing machine is edited to slow down the fast motion.[63]
  • "Born Again Krabs" - In the UK and Ireland, the flashing lights when the Flying Dutchman enters the hospital, and every time he enters and leaves the Krusty Krab, are all slowed down.[64]
  • "The Camping Episode" - On GTV in Indonesia, the Camp Fire Song Song is cut.
  • "Plankton's Army" - "But united, the Plankton family could be a real pain in the fanny!" is stripped of the word "fanny" in the UK and Ireland due to the UK and Ireland preferring the word's old usage as a given name.[citation needed] The scene has been added back as of 2022.[citation needed]
  • "The Sponge Who Could Fly" - On GTV in Indonesia and in Italy, the song "He's Flying" is cut, despite "If Only I Could Join You" and "All You Need Is Friends to Fly" not being cut (or possibly cut in Indonesian version).
  • "SpongeBob Meets the Strangler" - On TF1 in France and GTV in Indonesia, the scene where SpongeBob steps on the Strangler's eyes and socket with his cleats is cut, likely to avoid kids from imitating this dangerous act and because of its disturbing imagery.[65]

Season 4

  • "Krabs vs. Plankton" - In the UK and Ireland, SpongeBob's line "Don't worry, Mr. Krabs. I'm on the case!" is shortened to simply "Don't worry, Mr. Krabs," due to him holding a knife.[66] The "I'm on the case." line is still seen in the subtitles. Also in 5Star airings back in 2017, the shot of SpongeBob as a rocket for him to try and open the briefcase is darkened due to fast motion.[citation needed]
  • "Dunces and Dragons" - In recent UK and Ireland airings, three scenes were edited; firstly, as well as the Paramount+ UK print, the scene where the henchman is tempted to kill himself is cut[67]; secondly, the shot where Mr. Krabs gets catapulted to the machine where SpongeBob and Patrick was darkened and slowed down due to fast motion; thirdly, when the dragon jellyfish appears in Planktonamor's tower, him stinging SpongeBob and Squidly were edited to slow down, darken, and cut a few frames.[citation needed]

  • "Mrs. Puff, You're Fired" - In the UK and Ireland, two scenes were edited; firstly, before SpongeBob, Mr. Fitz and Sergeant Roderick crash into Incidental 41's kitchen, the background was edited to darken the screen and slow down the shot, and secondly, the scene where SpongeBob breaks the brake to the boat during the chase was edited to zoom in and darken the screen.[69]
  • "Squidtastic Voyage" - In the UK and Ireland, the scene where the submarine controls explode was edited to slow down the flashing lights slightly.[70]
  • "Best Frenemies" - In recent UK and Ireland airings, Mr. Krabs' line "Hey, get back here you little booger!" at the end is cut.[71] The Paramount+ UK print edits this out too, but the line "Hey, get back here" is kept in with the "you little booger!" part being muted. In old prints before May 2022, the line has been kept intact, although it cuts out the "booger" word. This is most likely due to it sounding like "bugger", which is considered a swear word in Britain.[citation needed]

Season 5

  • "Friend or Foe" - In the UK and Ireland, two scenes containing lightning flashes were edited, firstly, when Plankton laughs evilly, and secondly, when Mr. Krabs laughs evilly in a similar fashion.[72]

  • "A Flea in Her Dome" - The scene where the flea gives birth to some eggs was cut in Indonesian broadcasts and the scene where the flea jumps from Patrick to Sandy is cut in the UK and Ireland because the way Sandy wraps the flea collar around her neck was quite tight and violent. Because of this, the flea jumps from Patrick to SpongeBob and there is an audio cut.[77] This was kept in S4C airings in Wales and Cula4 airings in Ireland. The scene and the audio have been restored since 2024 when remastering.[78]

  • "Stanley S. SquarePants" - Two scenes are cut in Indonesia: The first being when Stanley meets Sandy for the first time, and the second being when SpongeBob talks to Mr. Krabs about Stanley.

Season 6

  • "House Fancy" - The scene where SpongeBob accidentally rips off Squidward's toenail was cut in Indonesia because of a warning from the Indonesian Broadcasting Commission for being too violent and gross,[citation needed] despite the fact that the scene is dubbed into Indonesian and does remain on Netflix and Nickelodeon Southeast Asia airings.[citation needed]
  • "Krabby Road" - In the UK and Ireland, the lightning flashes in the opening outside the Bikini Bottom Jail were slowed down to prevent seizures for viewers.[85] However, this was originally uncut when it premiered in 2008, and when it aired on Channel 5 in 2015.[citation needed]

    • However, on the Netflix version, it is not cut.
  • "SpongeBob SquarePants vs. The Big One" - In the UK and Ireland, most of the thunder imagery during the second half is edited to remove, slow down, or darken flashes to prevent seizures for viewers.[86]
  • "Choir Boys" - In some countries, the title card is skipped.[87]
  • "Cephalopod Lodge" - In the UK and Ireland, the screen going black as Squidward is stung on the tongue by a jellyfish is replaced with a still shot of the previous image, due to the screen going black in the original version.[88] The scene has been added back as of 2024.[89]
  • "Squid's Visit" - On GTV in Indonesia, scenes at the Krusty Krab and Squidward's visit to Casa de Esponja were cut.

All of these edits are to prevent seizures to viewers.[93]

Season 7

  • "Stuck in the Wringer" - In the UK and Ireland, when SpongeBob launches towards Mr. Krabs and the customers who picked some of the money, the explosion is slowed down and darkened to prevent seizures for viewers.[citation needed]
  • "Someone's in the Kitchen with Sandy" - In the UK and Ireland, the scene where Plankton dressed as Sandy smashes the Krusty Krab door is cut, but this has been reinstated in reprints as of 2024.[citation needed]
  • "A Pal for Gary" - In the UK and Ireland, the scene where Puffy Fluffy jumps towards Gary was edited to darken the screen where there is fast motion to prevent seizures for viewers. In 2024, it was edited so that the motion was slowed down as well as darkened.[94]

  • "Gary in Love" - In the UK and Ireland, shortly after the two snails' eyes get tangled, the scene where Gary jumps into action is modified so that he does not turn around in the scene where he is surrounded by a background with blue and white moving lines, to prevent seizures to people sensitive to fast motions. This scene was not edited in CITV airings and in 2024, this scene was reinstated.

  • "The Great Patty Caper" - In the UK and Ireland, the scene where SpongeBob and Patrick jump off a cliff as SpongeBob turns into a hang-glider was shortened to remove scenes of fast motion, which also resulted in some of Patrick's dialogue being removed. This was reinstated as of 2024.

Both scenes were cut in UK and Irish airings. However, the scene of SpongeBob saying "Do I smell Brownies?" is left intact. Both of these scenes however are kept on Netflix UK, however were cut out on Paramount+ UK.[125] In reprints as of 2024, the scenes are still cut, but differently to how they previously were.[126] From at least 2024, Nick Germany airs the episode uncensored.
    • Even though the scenes are cut in the UK and Ireland, they are mentioned in the EPG as a sensitivity issue.[127]

There is also another fast motion edit: During the "focus on the road" montage, the part where SpongeBob is in front of the boat with swirly eyes is darkened. And again when SpongeBob spins the boat with Mrs. Puff on the front of the boat, it is darkened and shortened.[citation needed]

    • In the UK and Ireland (and the international digital version [citation needed]), Squidward only opens the first two doors instead of three. • The scene also got removed from reruns in the USA in November 2019, being replaced with Baby Squidward pooping his diaper due to a Standards & Practices issue, although it was left intact on the Nick app.[191] Canadian airings on YTV still air this episode uncut as of December 2019.[192] The scene is also present in India and Germany.[193][194] Eventually, the UK updated its censorship to the USA edit.[195] Some countries will air the episode with the visual of Baby Squidward, but the Red Mist audio stays intact.[196]
