Season 1 (Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years)
The first season of Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years premiered on Paramount+ on March 4, 2021 with "The Jellyfish Kid" and ended on May 26, 2023 with "Hats Off to Space" and "In a Nut's Shell." This season premiered on Nickelodeon on April 2, 2021 with "Sugar Squeeze" and "Tag, You're It" and ended on August 22, 2024 with "In a Nut's Shell." The series is a spin-off and prequel of SpongeBob SquarePants, featuring younger versions of the main characters from the original show. SpongeBob, Patrick, Squidward, and Sandy are campers; Mrs. Puff and Mr. Krabs are camp counselors; Pearl is a baby; Plankton and Karen are camp chefs; and Gary is a formerly-stray snail who becomes SpongeBob's pet.
The season was originally announced with 13 half-hour episodes.[1] On August 11, 2021, the number was extended to 26.[2] The first 13 half-hours of the season were released on DVD on March 8, 2022, and the second 13 half-hours were released on DVD on December 5, 2023.
Development
Kamp Koral began production in April 2019, when John Cahoon was hired as its CG supervisor.[3] In June, Joann Chang was hired as a production assistant[4] and Kate Coffey as a lead environment artist.[5] Chang worked as a production assistant until July of 2020,[4] while Cahoon and Coffey would remain for the show's entire run.
On January 1st, 2020, John Trabbic posted a rough storyboard from "Cabin of Curiosities." On the 16th, he would post a cleaned-up version, revealing the episode's production code and title.[6]
In June 2020, storyboarding began for "Camp SpongeBob."[7]
Vypac Voeur, a character modeler for early season 1 episodes, posted renders of Plankton, Mrs. Puff, Squidward, and Mr. Krabs in July 2020.[8] MinJin Semsar-Park, a technical director and rigging artist, rigged character models from August 2020 to October 2021.[9]
"The Jelly Life," an episode around the middle of the season, had its first draft written on February 25th, 2021.[10]
In March 2021, Andrea Joan Cabral was hired, and she would provide storyboard plussing on the second half of the season. Her work on the show ended in March 2022.[11]
Work on the second half of the season would begin in April 2021. These episodes would begin storyboarding,[12][13][14], background design[15], and prop design.[16] Concept and reference art for "First and Last Aid" was developed, and Maddie Carter worked on character designs from episodes around the middle of the season. These include Maisey Manes from "Camp Spirit" on March 18th, Nurse Helga from "First and Last Aid" on May 12th and 13th, the ranger from "Night of the Living Stench" on May 14th, and the skull from "Camp Crossbones" on June 1st.[17] On June 24th, a design of a mud splatter from "Camp Spirit" was finished.[18]
In the spring of 2021, the episodes "Sun's Out, Fun's Out," "First and Last Aid," and "Night of the Living Stench" were plussed.[19] Andrea Joan Cabral plussed "Camp Crossbones" on May 28th, 2021,[20] "Deep Sea Despot" on September 27th,[21], "Patrick Takes the Cake" sometime in December,[22] and "Scaredy Squirrel" on December[23] 8th.[24] Jordan Koch plussed "The Jelly Life" on June 3rd.[25] Carl Edward Mongan worked as a storyboard revisionist for "Painting with Squidward" onwards, from July 2021 and April 2022.[26]
On January 25th, 2023, David Thomas uploaded his storyboards from "The Perfect Camper" to Slideshare.[27]
