سبونج بوب سكوير بانتس (Sbōnǧ Bōb Skwēr Bānts󠁁󠁒) is the licensed Arabic dub of SpongeBob SquarePants. It is part of International SpongeBob SquarePants.

History

The dub airs on MBC 3 and Nickelodeon Arabia. It was first aired on the latter between 2008 and 2011, then MBC 3 from 2010[2] to present day and later on Nickelodeon Arabia again, after the 2015 relaunch.

On MBC 3, the episode titles and two parts of the theme song are localized in Arabic, with other instances of text untouched. On Nickelodeon, they air the original untouched.

On Nickelodeon Arabia after the 2015 relaunch, they started airing the original episodes untouched.
Some episodes from season 2 and most of seasons 5 and 7 (8 episodes) are aired in full screen format 4:3, and the rest of seasons 8, 3, 4 are in 16:9.

Censorship

  • On MBC 3, some episodes have been censored.
  • In "Truth or Square," the wedding scene was cut (MBC 3 version), while on Nicktoons Arabia the scene aired uncut with the re-dubbed version.
  • All of season 5 to 9 (episodes 179 - 187) have been censored on the MBC 3 version. However, they are fixed by the new re-dubbing versions on Nickelodeon and Nicktoons. Some episodes from season 7 and 8 are banned. "It's a SpongeBob Christmas!," "Gary in Love," and "Love That Squid" are banned to air from MBC 3 broadcasting for certain reasons. When Nickelodeon Arabia relaunched, the episode "It's a SpongeBob Christmas!" premiered in The Arab World 2015 Christmas marathon.
  • On Nickelodeon Arabia, they used to air the MBC 3 version of season 8 episodes, while on Nicktoons Arabia they are airing uncut versions which contain butt jokes for the episode "A Friendly Game."
  • In most of the episodes, the Krusty Krab's front side was cut due to some Islamic broadcasting rules for the Nautical Flag "Romeo" due to it being shaped like a cross. Also, in some episodes, the flag was colorized it to full red (MBC 3 Islamic version).
  • All Lady Turtles scenes were cut.

Nick Arabia re-dub (2015 - present)

On Nickelodeon Arabia, most of the season 5 and 7 episodes aired late with a re-dubbed version because various scenes from those seasons were censored on MBC 3. On Nicktoons Arabia, all the episodes of season six were aired full and uncut (same actors - studio..etc.)

  • Episodes like "Gary in Love" and "Love That Squid" are dubbed by the beginning of 2017, and for the first time premiered once since Nicktoons Arabia launched.

All of season 8 is re-dubbed and fixed, but some title cards had changed like "Frozen Face-Off." For the rest of the season, they kept all title cards as they aired on MBC 3. The last episodes to be re-dubbed are "The Good Krabby Name"/"Move It or Lose It."

Trivia

  • In 1999, the show had an Arabic subtitled version, under the سبانجبوب سكواربانتز.
  • In 2008, Nickelodeon Arabia aired a bumper with SpongeBob sleeping during the late-night broadcast hours with him drawn smoother than his normal appearance in the show.
  • "Frozen Face-Off" has two titles that are completely different, the first one is on MBC 3 and the other one is on Nickelodeon Arabia.
  • "SpongeBob You're Fired" was the last episode to be dubbed on MBC 3 because of the Nickelodeon Arabia relaunch.
  • There's a fake and illegal dub by the Jordanian Childhood Voice Institute that was aired on Bokra Kids. Not much is known about it.
  • Right before an episode/title card appears, the logo of the series is in English, but there is in addition, the word "سبونج بوب" (SpongeBob) in Arabic on the north right corner of logo.
